Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Here's a little story I wrote about Mance Lipscomb: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:11am Alex In Illinois:

St. Louis Blues, Port Arthur Blues, Newport News Blues.

Well I'll Go to the Top of Our Stairs Blues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

Don't make any rash decisions, Brian in UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Stanley:

Brian - I'm back from my travails.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:19am Brian in UK:

Sahib Stanley returns from the sub continent with tales and wisdom gleaned from his transendental (teeth to you and me) experience.
  9:19am melinda:

You don't usually hear about arthritis in blues songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Doug Schulkind:

Actually, sort of not true, melinda. There are 100s of songs about having the "jake leg." It's not exactly arthritis, but close enough for me to mention it and sound authoritative.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:24am doctorjazz:

Come Back Blues sounds like blues after soul music came to the fore, vocal style owes much to gospel (the timing of it is right). No longer that strict holy/devil music split.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:28am Alex In Illinois:

But "Jake Leg" is caused by drinking tainted "Jamaican Ginger".
  9:28am Lore:

Been ruminating on this Emmett Murray tune quite a bit lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Stanley:

Brian - for once my teeth held out.
Only minor ailments and mental meltdowns, this time.
Usual highs and lows.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:30am Alex In Illinois:

I mean "was" caused, by drinking tainted "Jamaican Ginger". I don't think you are likely to find a batch of that stuff with a dangerous chemical added to hide the alcohol content these days.
  9:33am melinda:

I can imagine songs mentioning jake leg, it's hearing the word 'arthritis' that's different. Medical terminology vs. colloquial speech.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Doug Schulkind:

Your presence is a joybringer, Lore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex in Illinois
You are correct, Sir. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to reference songs about malfunctioning limbs. (Though jake leg was much more than just an affliction of the extremities.)
  9:40am Ramblin' Ray:

Greetings all! May all your blues be pentatonic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Ike:

So it's still safe to drink D&G Ginger Beer? Ha ha.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:42am Brian in UK:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:45am Artie Haywire:

A nice write-up on the song "I'm Gonna Dig Myself A Hole" - atomicplatters.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Ike:

Worse than that, Brian, D&G is tainted w/actual high-fructose corn syrup instead of real sugar! But it's about half the price (or less) of the fancy ones like Maine Root or Fentimans.
Avatar 9:45am annie:

back when Red's Ginger Brew were bottling in a NYC brewery, i recall we got a shipment of the brew in our weekly grocery order. one of the bottles had a Molson's label inside the bottle with the drink. steve told me they used that bottler so it made sense.. .. just funny.
Avatar 9:46am annie:

i'd say maine root is the best of all the ginger ales.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Smilin' Joe is singing about taking a pee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Thank you for that intelligence, Prof. Haywire!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:47am Alex In Illinois:

@annie: Maybe that label that was free inside the bottle of Red's could be redeemed for a free bottle of Molson's. Well, I probably would have tried that.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:48am Artie Haywire:

Ringing in on behalf of Blenheim fine ginger ale. Though it's not in the Jamaican ginger beer style.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:48am Brian in UK:

Trouble is, I like D&G GB. Keep meaning to make my own.
Done made our own lemonade & elderflower cordial. They all take a load of sugar which ever way you cut it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Ike:

Agreed @Annie, Maine Root slays. Nice & spicy.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:50am Brian in UK:

Reminds me of Attila the policeman in Under Milk Wood. He pee'd in his helmet at night. Trouble is he forgot that fact when he came to putting on the helmet in the morning.
Avatar 9:50am annie:

that would have been cool, alex.. i hadn't thought if that!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:50am Artie Haywire:

The thing about sugar is that it can taste pretty good. Especially when it's balancing something nice and sour. I'll have to seek out some of this Maine Root.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:57am Alex In Illinois:

I have made Ginger beer a few times. A lot of sugar went into it, but also so did a whole pack of brewer's yeast each time, and after 10 days, that yeast metabolized most of the sugar into something else.

Amirite - a rather beautiful greyish/black stone found only in Tahiti in the last decade of the Nineteenth Century. It brought bad luck to the person who found it and caused their hands and feet to become webbed and them to have awkward feelings towards their siblings. (more citations needed)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

You know who wrote the liner notes to this Eric Dolphy record?

Nat Hentoff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Little Danny:

Mischa Mengelberg doing his best Monk. Great Dolphy track, Doug, reminded me a bit of some of Monk's early Blue Note sides like "Humph"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:42am Artie Haywire:

Origin tales of Blenheim have the schmutziness being the starting point, in the form of mineral ridden, sulphurous well water. Flavored with ginger, sugar and carbonation, those starting flavors became complements and formed something else entirely. Interesting story, who knows if it's true?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

And Mengelberg was composer of that track, too.
