I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Whoo, blue! Dig it and the dancing bats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
fred:

You know how some kids try to "save" a bird they find on the ground? As a kid I did that too, except it was a bat
These bats have wicked dance moves
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm
fred:

Good afternoon James and Mayuko
Avatar 12:04pm
Mayuko:

Good afternoon, james, fred, thank you for tuning in! These bats do look like having a party! fred, that sounds like something a future WFMU listener as a child would do, haha. Did you find it in a park?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
listener james from westwood:

How do, fred and Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
fred:

I found it in a shed next to a church in my grandparent's small countryside village. My grandmother wasn't too thrilled with my find
Avatar 12:15pm
Mayuko:

I don't know why some people hates bats. They're normal looking mammals. Besides Central park has a fun Bat walk you can do with a guide who carries some device that catches high frequency and so you can listen to their sound. Slugs are much scarier than them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Let's do the Batusi!
Avatar 12:20pm
Mayuko:

Ah, I probably should have brought Prince with me. Hello, Ken!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
fred:

I just love Steve Reich's music
Avatar 12:22pm
Mayuko:

Yes! This is just so, so good!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
fred:

Someone somewhere has probably done a similar thing with the "please call Stella" archive. I wish I could hear that
Avatar 12:25pm
Mayuko:

Serious Moonlight Sonatas's Carol should play that track repeatedly for 3 hours since it says 'my name is Carol' (I heard so anyway...) I'd listen to it completely drunk.

A few days ago I realized that it seemed I had never played Gary Numan, I don't know why! Makes no sense.

Hallo, Scraps, thank you for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm

Maybe someday I'll manage to wake up early enough to catch Carol"s whole show. I said that with Jonathan's show and never pulled it off though

Bat story: when I was in college ('80s) living in a group of shabby off-campus apartments called the Knox boxes a nieghbor, a Chinese girl, came over in an absulutely terrified state and told us there was a monster in her apartment. She wanted us (me, roomates) to gather ourselves with weapons and go over and do battle with it. When we got there we found a tiny bat bat crouched in a corner of the ceiling. We chased it gently out a window with a broom. Made me think a lot of people may know about bats without ever seeing one close
Avatar 12:35pm
Scraps:

When i hear the reich piece i always think of the airline erotica musical piece in All That Jazz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
fred:

That was Yapoos? Wow, this band covered a lot of ground
Avatar 12:38pm
Mayuko:

Hi paul b! That is funny. I thought bats are a symbol of fortune or charm or something like that in China, but doesn't mean people necessarily like them I suppose. I'd collect people to fight against slugs if they appear in my room, but bats really are not that scary looking thing at all!
  12:40pm
zmzz:

got tuned in just now. good you played Xenakis.
Avatar 12:45pm
Mayuko:

allo, zmzz! thanks for the comment yesterday! good for you making it to Nagasaki. I only went so long ago but I thought it was a beautiful place. very interesting history too. would love to go back there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
fred:

I saw Ectoplasm Girls yesterday and really liked their set. Melodic noise if that makes sense. I hadn't heard about them before, and was wary because they had a video on, but it was dance footage so that turned out OK for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
Doug Schulkind:

Good day, Mayuko and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
paul b:

Mayuko, I remember having the impression at the time she had never seen a bat before. She did not seem to know what it was. I admit I've never been that enamored of bats myself, despite their being fairly common in the town I grew up in. However the bats in your playlist header picture today look pretty cute (even as they imagine to themselves they look ferocious)
Avatar 12:52pm
Mayuko:

Ectoplasm Girls sounds familiar, think I heard it on WFMU. "Melodic Noise" does make perfect sense!
Avatar 12:52pm
Mayuko:

Hello, Doug!!!! Good day to you too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
fred:

I'm getting this premium (as if there was any doubt about that)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Webhamster Henry:

I used to have bats fly in the house every once in a while. We'd have the top of the window open and they'd chase a fly in the house and couldn't figure out how to get out. I'd catch them with a fishnet and bring them outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Doug Schulkind:

@fred
This year's crop of premiums look especially magnificent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
fred:

'l'eau et les cicatrices" means "water and scars"
  1:06pm
zmzz:

right. did you know where's memorials and statues from all around the world surrounding the Fountain of Peace. interestingly St. Paul donated a memorial representing US as a sole city.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
fred:

@Doug: I wish I could afford to get them all like I used to, but even though I'm extra motivated with Nachum leaving, it looks like a stretch
  1:14pm
zmzz:

gotta go. away for so long, i have lists of errands to tackle. catch you later.
Avatar 1:15pm
Mayuko:

fred, it comes with a poster. it's rather a poster that comes with music. hope you'll like it!
Avatar 1:16pm

oh and thanks for the translation! re: water and scar
Avatar 1:17pm
Mayuko:

Thanks for tuning in Webhamster Henry! That sounds like they were causing a little too much trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm
fred:

Jean Louis! I only saw them once, but I loved that show.
And I plan to see Alan Courtis on Monday
Avatar 1:25pm
Mayuko:

zmzz, I did not know about those donated statues! Will look them up! I did go to the park, but it was a tour and, I was behind the group because some local man hanging out in the park started talking to me about the atomic bomb and I nearly got lost. Had to run to catch up with the group, no time to really look around. Funny memory.
In any case, good luck with the errands and have a good weekend!
Avatar 1:30pm
Mayuko:

@fred It must be great to see Alan Courtis live playing tracks from this album. I really like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
fred:

also, "La Course du lievre a travers les champs" means something like "the hare's run across the fields"
Are the Japanese titles similar?
Avatar 1:33pm
Mayuko:

ha, that's totally different, in Japanese it's like "The wolf smells like an angel." Japanese people somehow love French. I don't think I've seen that many people naming their songs with Spanish. Meanwhile, Haruomi Hosono named his tracks with esperanto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
fred:

Alan Courtis isn't playing solo but as part of a super-group with the former owner of Bimbo Tower and a member of Sun Plexus. I'll probably hide from him because I tried and failed to put him in touch with researchers for one of his projects with autistic teens
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
fred:

Esperanto? Is that why Sakamoto named an album this way? (I love that record)
Avatar 1:42pm
Mayuko:

What I seem to remember is that in that time period Ryuichi was trying to illustrate the feeling of "neo geo" = new geography of the world and music, so probably the language that (was supposed to) represent the borderless world was a good motif for that theme? can't remember what years those albums were offhand, but think they were closer to each other in the late 80's...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm
fred:

I think Koenjihyakkei must have heard Magma at some point
Avatar 1:43pm
Mayuko:

should play something from that album Esperanto sometime! I don't think I've had anything from it yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
fred:

My copy of it says Esperanto is from 1985
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
fred:

I used to see Kronos every year, but they now are beyond my price range
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
Ike:

Uh oh, I'm late! Am I going to get penalized?
Avatar 1:56pm
Mayuko:

Yes, Ike, the penalty is to stand upside down for 1 minute. It's actually very hard (unless you do yoga regularly.) Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
fred:

@Ike: Its not happening, you're being late is no big deal. We're all glad your here
Avatar 2:01pm

This is my last song today - thank you all for listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm

See you next week, Mayuko. Same bat-time; same bat-channel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm

Thanks Mayuko, I had the perfect setup today: ice cream and oreos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm

Many thanks, Mayuko!

Thanks again all, I'll go get me ice cream too! See you all next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm

Ha ha ha ha I can't do it! Clearly my penalty is to finally go to yoga class like I've been saying I would.
Avatar 2:10pm

@Ike YES!!

I finally had a Saturday off
and completely forgot to
listen.. miss hearing your show

Suzuki Junzo:

Hi. Happen to find here, and thanks for playing my track from latest album!! And find you are talking about titles of the track and album. Let me talk about this. La Course du lievre a travers les champs. Taking its name from the 1972 René Clément film And Hope to Die (which was itself adapted from one of Suzuki’s favorite noir novels, David Goodis' Black Friday). This movie's script writer is Sebastian Japrisot named "la course..." and later he novelized this. Off course based on the story "Black Friday" by my fav David goodis. "Black Friday" s Jap Title is "The Wolf Smells like an angels" . Thanks!
  11:11am
Suzuki Junzo:

And Cicatrice, is the Big Chief's name of Indian tribe in the movie. Called "The Searchers" by John Ford.
Avatar 10:09pm
Mayuko:

Whoa, thank YOU Junzo san! Will quote and explain this in my upcoming show!!
