Mengelberg (in)famously recorded a parrot in duet with some Dolphy on record, if I have that right.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
Jeff Golick:

Misha should really get a full three hours, now that I've started into this...
Avatar 10:36am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Honestly I wasn't familiar w/ his name @ all - but BobBrainen (on Saturdays) just played a track or two - & Mingus was the 1st thing I thot - & then he played Dolphy anyhow...This sounds halfway twixt Monk & Taylor - which is an interesting place to be...
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:36am
Peter from DE:

lucky to see the quartet w/ Douglas in Philly. Show began w/ Bennink playing "ah leu cha" solo (based on Philly Joe). then Mengelberg started banging left-hand clusters and it eventually revealed itself to be a deconstructed My Funny Valentine (the bridge)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am
Jeff Golick:

Lucky, indeed, @Peter!

@RRN63: just read an older intvw with Mengelberg wherein he said he found Cecil's concept repetitive (& not in a good way).

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Jazz is so rich.
Yeah - you could say percussive. Do you think he influenced him anyhow?
Fluxus & NYC - this is a thing...never knew there was a direct Jazz connection, but why not...
Avatar 10:44am
Scraps:

Tayror repetitive? Mengelberg said that? Well, shakes my head....
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:45am
Peter from DE:

I love Cecil but I do think he plays the same rhythms and scales all the time. I think of Mengelberg and Jaki Byard -- having mastery of old styles, harmonic construction, as well as out playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am
Jeff Golick:

Hey up there, @annie! G'morning to you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Jeff Golick:

Yay, Byard is a good comparison. So much contained in one player.
Avatar 10:51am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting as Taylor's background was reportedly quite Academic. Hard to imagine any Out piano player not being influenced by him...It's often surprising to hear one Artist's take on another being critical (to whatever degree) - but then, if they wanted to do what another did, they wouldn't be themselves - which takes a huge amount of belief, effort & assertion, after all.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Peter from DE:

plus Byard too had a streak of absurdism.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:54am
Peter from DE:

early Taylor clearly comes out of Ellington, so he is definitely rooted. many players sound superficially like Taylor, but when you listen you realize that their clusters are different and their rhythms are different (e.g. Don Pullen)
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:56am
doctorjazz:

Byard was fun, CT not so much. Mengleberg was also fun. Dutch stuff seems to love being playful, from what I've heard of it. Breuker was a riot in concert.
Avatar 10:57am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My understanding is that the Fluxus credo has involved Dada-like aesthetics, & Happenings / Performance Art - but w/ notably more Inclusive & Optimistic aims then a lot of Modernists.
Thx for the Schoolin' all youse!
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:58am
doctorjazz:

Never heard Taylor at all in Pullen, he stretched bop and the clusters come out of a bebop rhythmic sensibility
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:58am
Peter from DE:

Fluxus definitely included more artists of color (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, many others)
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:59am
Peter from DE:

@doctorjazz I agree. but many superficial listeners assume Pullen is derivative. (see also: Brad Mehldau - Bill Evans -- Mehldau is actually nothing like Evans)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am
Jeff Golick:

If you're a pianist, I think you can follow Taylor or go in a completely opposite direction, but you've got to reckon with him in some way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am

Derek Bailey is just the ultimate wildcard.

I'd agree on Milford, heard and got the first trio album Jump when it came out, didn't think of it as "challenging "music like some of the more "out" pianists, say Borgman.

@doctorjazz, yes "Jump" has grooves and forms, the improvisations go out but then come back in
Avatar 11:10am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...'Rood' here makes me think a bit of 20thCent. Academic composers - outside of Jazz...something about him seems to remind me of Monk (who is 2nd only to Trane for me in all of Jazz)...

Don't know Fuji, sounds like worth checking out. (so many holes in my musical knowledge...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
Jeff Golick:

Huh, @Peter, Fujii and Melford did an album together! www.discogs.com... - had no idea.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:11am
Peter from DE:

Fujii has several different line-ups and they sound totally different. "past life" (sextet) sounds like Melford's "same river twice" with maybe a hint of early George Russell. also has trio, duo w/ trumpet, and big band(s)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am
Jeff Golick:

@RRN63: in that same interview I mentioned earlier, Mengelberg (who revered Monk) recalls meeting him during a Monk Qt tour of Europe -- this would be in Monk's much later years -- and Monk doesn't recall his own composition "Criss Cross." On Monk's next ride through Europe, he plays "Criss Cross." Hard to know what to believe here, but it's an interesting story.

Cheers Jeff! I think of Monk as no less than an emissary of a different sort of nervous system.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:15am
Peter from DE:

@jeff not buying that Monk story. "criss cross" is on one of the 60s columbia quartet albums. actually, i do buy that he would have SAID "i don't remember that" if someone asked.
