This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

he played a show in town, weirdly enough. he's so ancient now. we talked about Durch die Wuste, though he could barely understand me.
"that was my first solo album," he said, wistfully. "I know" I said. That was it, really, but it was nice. The show was cool, sort of too short but really interesting

geezerette:

From the U.K. Guardian, 7-7-2006: "Handy catch-all though it is, krautrock is more a geographical term than a musical one, because 1970s German rock came in so many forms: Neu!'s frictionless rhythms, Can's funky abandon, Kraftwerk's immaculate machine music. Quiet trailblazer Hans-Joachim Roedelius gravitates towards what long-time admirer and sometime collaborator Brian Eno dubbed "discreet music": pastoral mantras as clean and fluid as running water. If the term didn't already mean something else, you could call it trance. This handsome 31-track collection only brushes the surface of his impressively diverse work, spread over about 80 albums. Both of his essential groups are featured - the pensive ripple of Cluster, with Dieter Moebius, and the quirky energy of Harmonia, with Moebius and Neu!'s Michael Rother - as are tasters for his first project (1968's Human Being) and his latest (2005's Lunz). Throughout, there is the bewitching sound of a man humbly mapping out his own world."

Live '74 is amazing Danny! Some of my favorite stuff of theirs, really. They're even better live in a lot of ways! Nothing from that one tonight, but I do have a track coming up from Documents 1975, which is Harmonia live in their studio in Forst

Wonderful how that amplifies and clarifies the music.
You make it shine,man.
Avatar 8:29pm

That means so much, Geezerette, thank you. I try, I really try!

Some feel that Harmonia is the ultimate krautrock group. Where do we stand on that one, all?
Avatar 8:30pm
Flash Strap:

also, this is such a hilariously fast reading of Walky-Talky from Deluxe (almost half the length) that it's almost like one of those Neu! 2 "remixes"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
doctorjazz:

Now this sounds more like I'd picture Kraftwerk sounding, this Harmonia track.
(I know incredibly little about all this stuff, definitely getting a schooling).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
melinda:

I don't know much about Neu!, Harmonia, or Kraftwerk but I always like hearing them on WFMU, so it's nice to have a show of this theme.
Avatar 8:35pm
Flash Strap:

Speaking of sounding-like, it's sort of odd at this time that Rother (w/Harmonia) would do something that sounds SO much like his old buddy Dinger. I'd love to know the story - this sounds so much more like Dinger's side of Neu! 75, which was recorded later in the same year
Avatar 8:37pm
Flash Strap:

next up, we have a track w/ neither Dinger or Rother, but a Moebius & Plank track from 1981 that shows the enduring motorik influence. Then on to Rother's sleepy cosmic country drives!
Avatar 8:40pm
Flash Strap:

love this track. Moebius&Plank are the best

I never thought of Harmonia as the *ultimate* krautrock group. But I don't know that I have an alternate in mind.

Because Krautrock is not a style, I can't feel that anyone is the ultimate Krautrock.

Scraps, Quinn, Geezerette: you all speak my mind

I really think M&P recorded 2 of the best records of all time when they got together for this and Rastakraut Pasta. Playful, but basically just as good as the best Harmonia or Cluster
Avatar 8:48pm
geezerette:

& the country western/western swing thing... :)
Avatar 8:50pm
Flash Strap:

This, just like almost everything else so far, recorded with and by Conny Plank
Avatar 8:51pm
Flash Strap:

It's funny to hear Liebezeit play something so simple. He works a lot of subtle variation into it
Avatar 8:57pm
Flash Strap:

This is sort of the idealized, every-Rother composition, at least of this period
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:59pm

coelacanth∅:

Evan, i was out of earshot for "tiki taka" & the comments compelled me to back up my player for a taste of it. i backed up to your last mic break for bearing (which i didn't need!) and heard you mention that "ambient" music originally meant "background" music - which i remember, when Eno started his ambient series...
but for me, ambient means "surrounding", or "engulfing". there's no such thing as background music for me. if it's audible, i'm listening to it.
Avatar 9:26pm
Flash Strap:

I totally agree. Really what I meant was that I see the distinction between previous incarnations of ambient or mood music or background music and the Eno-era "ambient" ethos to be slightly dubious, that most psychedelic bands had played with being ambient in much the same way as Harmonia would do (even though Harmonia did it better for the most part)
Avatar 9:33pm
Flash Strap:

also I didn't mean to imply that ambient and background were synonymous for Eno's intentions. I was mainly addressing sentiments such as these:

"Perhaps Eno's reason for praising Harmonia so highly was that their music fit the requirements of ambient rock. Its music was equally suitable for active or passive listening. The careful listener found his/her attentions rewarded by the musical activities and sounds, but Harmonia's music was also capable of setting a sonic environment."

Which is a significant musical concept, which I hold dear, and which definitely predates the Eno or the 1970s. I just wanted to stress the continuity between that and things that would have been described in their time as "background"
