This is brilliant!

I remember reading that Frank Zappa decided to break up the original Mothers Of Invention when he overheard Count Basie begging for an advance from a promoter.

pacific standard simon:

My high school library had 16 rpm records. They were all the equivalent of contemporary audio books.
  4:04am
Mark R:

Also because they couldn't play.
  4:05am
Mark R:

Yeah, I knew they were a real thing, I just never saw one--audio books makes sense because they were low audio quality, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13am
pacific standard simon:

"Couldn't play" is context specific -- they played perfectly well for a rock band of the era. Zappa wanted a bunch of studio-level (Wrecking Crew guys) musicians who would play for subsistence money.
  4:16am
Mark R:

I think that's probably a fair assessment, Simon--they couldn't play his very intricate, complex music to his standard--I think Ian Underwood was the only pre-1969 guy who survived into the 70s band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18am
pacific standard simon:

Contempt for people who repeat the old canard that Big Brother and The Holding Company couldn't play up to Janis Joplin's standard (ha!).
  4:21am
Mark R:

I think it was more like, "If anyone's gonna be drunk off their ass on stage in this band, it's gonna be ME!" (With all due respect.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am
pacific standard simon:

Don Preston also joined the later Mothers. Others did, but only in joke roles.

If I believed in souls, I would probably sell mine to be at the Massey Hall Concert.
  4:25am
Mark R:

Might as well sell it then, since it's not real...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28am
pacific standard simon:

Believe it or not, I made a 16 rpm thing of the "Eight Miles High" intro. It was underwater.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30am
pacific standard simon:

It aint real, so no body is offering.
  4:41am
Mark R:

That sounds interesting--I'd love to hear that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44am
Guido from Cologne:

Hello good morning Mark!
  4:45am
Mark R:

Morning, Guido! Glad you could join us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58am
pacific standard simon:

Would like to share that, Mark, but can't find a way to do it.
  4:59am
Mark R:

What a ripoff!
  5:00am
Mark R:

What format is it in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04am
pacific standard simon:

mp3. The problem is, who do I send a link to?
  5:11am
Mark R:

Send it to me c/o the station. There's a link here somewhere. You can also use dropbox. Seriously, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks very much, Mark, a true treat. Boss, man.

I think I figured out the code.
  5:16am
Mark R:

Got it, Simon--it's amazing!!!
  5:17am
Mark R:

Morning, Howard. Settle in for a long track. (I'm really digging it, I have to say...)
Avatar 5:18am

looks like a great playlist. I'm going to have to listen on the archive!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25am
pacific standard simon:

All hail Brian Eno. I think he will turn out to be the Picasso of our generation
  5:28am
Mark R:

I agree, Simon--one of the truly great artists of the 20th/21st century, and he hasn't cheated us--a huge body of work, all of it very good, quite a bit of it essential.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35am
pacific standard simon:

And a lot of it DIFFERENT.
  5:37am
Mark R:

Right--I remember when "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" with David Byrne came out--I had never heard audio samples like that--little pieces of TV interviews, preachers--I'm sure he didn't invent it, but it was my introduction to that sort of thing. Looping them, with a cool rhythm track, etc. Loved it.

Vincent Nifigance:

Eno is God, albeit a fallible one, 'Ali Click' was pretty terrible.
  5:44am
Mark R:

Howard, you'll notice I played a lot of ambient kind of stuff tonight. Didn't necessarily plan it that way, but it seemed to fit my mood. Hopefully yours, too.
Avatar 5:48am
Howard F:

@Mark R: I recently attended the ambient thing that Red Bull sponsored in Brooklyn. Got to see/hear some very cool artists. Have you checked out Malcolm Cecil?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50am
pacific standard simon:

"My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" was about the same time as Over The Edge, on KPFA, in Berkeley, CA. OTE is still going, I believe.
  5:50am
Mark R:

I'm familiar with him but I haven't really dived in too deeply yet. I'll make sure I do. (I get turned on to some of my favorite music by listeners like you!)
  5:51am
Mark R:

It came out around 1982 I believe, Simon. Coincidentally, I was taking a course in African literature at that time, and one of the books we read was "My Life in the Book of Ghosts."

The Palm Wine Drinkard! My favorite!

Thanks Mark, great show as always.
