From L.A. to Leipzig, this Drummertrain is making all local stops.

Yo. Harry J. Ten years old in 1969 and at the fun fair where I sees real skinheads getting down to The Liquidator.
The memory has never left me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
listener james from westwood:

Tired. Worked super-long yesterday, slept super-long last night, now hitting the wall. Will push through!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
David D:

I will do my best not to put you to sleep, James.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
David D:

Doug - lots of stops to come - and probably a few starts too...

What a memory, Stanley - do tell more!

Hey David, ready for Purple! (any Purple People Eaters around?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
David D:

Greetings Brian and Doctorjazz! Purple punch for everyone...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
Stanley:

My neighbours took me to the funfair when we lived in South London. My first memory of youth culture was Ska music, Jamaicans and scary looking skinheads dancing like they were posessed. I was enthralled. Bought the Liquidator with my pocket money the next day and we didn't even have a record player!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Parq:

Deep in the blue off the night where you are, I imagine. Cloudy and dismal here in NYC, see? Just drizzle, no real storm, at least not today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
David D:

Stanley: So that was your first record, I suppose - an important moment...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Stanley:

Lovely sunset up here, Parq.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
David D:

Hello Parq - we had sun until the darkness rolled in. Sun was the plan, but alas.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:43pm
Stanley:

David, actually, I was amassing a small stash of singles at the time to put pressure on my parents to get me a record player and eventually I got a second hand Dansette. It was frowned upon as pretty degenerate. (And they were right!)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:44pm

The Talawine was intense, exciting track!

Hell, I'm keeping OUDIST in the back of my head for possible Scrabble deployment.

OUDIST or STUDIO, I suppose. Good band name, Oudist Studio.

To paraphrase Joe Gould: In the winter I'm a Buddhist. In the summer, I'm an oudist."
By weird automatic phrase-association grazing, the playlist image caption "Leipzig, around the corner," made me think a second later: Lubitsch, The Shop Around The Corner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm
David D:

Love the associations, still b/p. The photo is literally just around the corner here, in a neighborhood with all sorts of architectural mixes and juxtapositions.

Folks go floating, punting, houseboating, what have you, in the canal? Or is it not so recreationally friendly...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm

We've got loads of waterways here for boats and the like - that canal is a too small and goes underground right at the corner here.

Had to check it out, was making me Crazy, went to YouTube, the track on that album (Ellington/Coltrane), is actually Angelica (though it could be named differently elsewhere, that's how I know it). I can sleep now...

That Andrey Zueff track brings to mind my favorite drug movie, "The Ten Commandments". It's about a wild cat with long hair and a beard who goes on a mountain retreat with someone who's far out and then comes back and gives everyone tablets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm
David D:

Thanks, Parq, is that recent? I've missed a lot of films along the way.

Tony Coulter did a premium years ago called something like Nobbly New Wave, and that Purple Gorilla would have been right at home on that comp.

Thanks, hilmar - glad you liked them. I'll hunt down das Tier later...

In college, I was in a rock band called Fishnet Ethics. (A band that later became The Del Fuegos once opened for us at a dorm party.) One of our "hits" was a song called "She's so Purple."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm

Doug - do you have a recording?

David D:

Yes, wave of new in mid-sweep, Parq.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Doug Schulkind:

I have a cassette somewhere. Alas, but no cassette player anymore. Another song of ours, "Lick a Knife," was included on WFMU's 1989 marathon premium: www.moorestevie.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm

Interesting stuff! Is there a place to download it - or do we need to make a very retroactive pledge?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
David D:

And have there been other compilations of the like?

WFMU had a string or marathon premiums featuring music made by staff members. We once put out vinyl record celebrating the 100th anniversary of Edison's invention of the phonograph. The songs were all dedicated to or inspired by Thomas Alva Edison. It was called "Edisongs."
