Paíto y los Gaiteros de Punta Brava:
Keeping Afro-Colombian Traditions Alive

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Sixto "Paíto" Silgado carries on a tradition of his ancestors born in palenques - settlements started by escaped slaves on Colombia's Caribbean (Atlantic) coast. He's master of the gaita negra - black gaita style. (The gaita is a traditional end-blown flute.)

Paíto lives in an isolated village and still thinks of himself as a farmer. He didn't start recording and touring until well into his 60s. But when he did, people took notice: Paíto’s 2006 debut album Gaita Negra was selected by Semana magazine as one of the 25 most important albums in the history of Colombian music.

Like / follow Paíto y los Gaitero y Los Gaiteros de Punta Brava on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/paitogaitero.

Huge thanks to Urian Sarmiento Obando and Lucía Ibáñez Salazar from Sonidos Enraizados, who you'll also hear from on tonight's show. Sonidos Enraizados is working with Paíto and other Afro-Colombian artists, getting their music released physically and digitally, booking performances and tours by the artists, and raising awareness of black traditions in Colombia which until recently were not well known or appreciated.

Check out Sonidos Enraizados and learn more at http://www.sonidosenraizados.com/.

Listen to (and buy!) music by Paíto and other black Colombian artists including all of Paito's albums and his first vinyl release, Mejor Que Me Mate Dios (available digitally too of course), at https://sonidosenraizados.bandcamp.com/.

Special thanks to a very special musician and champion of Colombian roots music in New York, Martín Vejerano of Cumbia River Band, Chia’s Dance Party and New York’s original gaiteros, La Cumbiamba Eneyé - who are performing gaita music at Terraza 7, 40-19 Gleane St. Elmhurst, Queens Saturday night July 22nd at 10 pm. Without Martín, this session would never have happened.

And of course massive thanks to our truly illustrious engineer, the one and only Irene Trudel!

A wonderful chonta marimba player named Diego Obregon lived in NY for a few years although I think he's back in Colombia now. He was on my show a couple of times, including when he played on one of my live broadcasts from Barbes in Park Slope - you can hear it at wfmu.org... - with his Grupo Chonta.
