WOMEX - held last month in Katowice, Poland - is the annual worldwide "world music" industry trade fair, a SXSW for world music geeks. If you want to learn about new artists, new trends, new happenings in the many worlds of world music, WOMEX is the place to be.

This week Rob and these globe-trotting colleagues share their WOMEX musical discoveries: Anastasia Tsioulcas of NPR Music, Jordana Leigh of Lincoln Center’s Rubenstein Atrium concert series, writer Tom Pryor, and musician Katie Gentile.

About Lo’Jo (from the Joe’s Pub event page):

Since they first got together in 1982, in a tiny village near Angiers, France, Lo’Jo have been one of the most eclectic, eccentric and mesmerizing musical collectives that Europe has ever produced. Like their British contemporaries, The Mekons, Lo’Jo are globetrotting legends and musical shapeshifters who’ve gone through many incarnations, and they’ve incorporated theater and visual art into their music since the beginning. Led by charismatic songwriter Denis Péan, Lo’Jo’s travels have taken them from collaborations with street theater groups and circuses to concerts in West Africa and the Sahara (including the very first edition of the now-legendary Festival au Desert), festival stages in Europe and North America and even a residency at Paris’ venerable Cabaret Sauvage.

Along the way Lo’Jo managed to record several iconic albums — from their 1993 debut recording Fils de Zamal and their 1998 breakthrough Mojo Radio to their 2012 album Cinema El Mundo. All have shaped Lo’Jo’s unique sound, which reimagines classic French chanson spiked with sounds and instruments from all over the world. With over 30 years of musical vagabondage behind them, Lo’Jo shows no signs of slowing down yet, and continues to tour and record into their third decade.

Lo'Jo's latest album Fonetiq Flowers was released on the World Village label this September and topped the Transglobal World Music radio chart in October.

It provide s advice and legal services to thousands of LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrants seeking refuge, fair treatment, and freedom in the United States. The work is truly lifesaving because there are nearly 80 countries around the world where it is a crime to be LGBTQ, with consequences up to and including the death penalty. For this reason, Immigration Equality fights to obtain asylum in the United States for LGBTQ and HIV-positive refugees - with a remarkable 99% win rate.

International Refugee Assistance Project: The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) organizes law students and lawyers to develop and enforce a set of legal and human rights for refugees and displaced persons.
