Hello Jeff and folks. I can remember the day it happened, or rather the days after. Think it is fair to say there was a feeling of shock and confusion. Then not long after Dock of the Bay arrived which I like but have always had mixed feelings for.

Hi, @Brian. Yeah, "Dock" is sort of inseparable from that moment.

Took a quick look at the Neil Young article. The streaming service is about Young's high quality digital audio beliefs. He launched the Pono player and a music download service for the same reason (they failed... I have and love the Pono, though). He's a big hater of compressed digital music. The streams are supposed to be high resolution digital.

So who likes All Rock 'n Roll; All Folk; All Jazz; All Blues etc. I think it is not possible to like everything. Have an appreciation maybe. The wonder of radio is that it is someone elses selection that you are opening your mind to like this wonderful station. The Off button is always an option. Constantly seeking is a healthy choice.
As John Peel said I may not like Merzbow but I would fight to the death to have it played on the radio.

Coel, sure. But then, 98% of rock mediocre to bad. 95% of jazz is etc. etc, etc. I don’t think hiphop is any worse.....

I don't believe that Merzbow did any Redding covers but will check my records.

Hey, I've forwarded the link to Ken's show on Bohemian Rhapsody (wondered why I never heard from them again...)

Time open a cold one and get pensive about what Otis could have achieved.

Jeff thanks for trying the impossible. Like saying define the universe and give two examples.

But I find new music every day. Because I look for it. So I’m happy about the state of music. 90+% of it is =always= shitty. But there’s a LOT of music. :-)

HA. Thanks for being such a forgiving and open and loving listener.

I regret that later on, Cecil refused to play standards or other people's compositions, as his versions were always so good.

The only music I can't stand is most Top 40 (post 1990) and bro country. Bad contemporary rock music will send me to the exits at a bar or restaurant really fast, but bad contemporary hiphop is still tolerable in my book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am

cool, thanks Jeff!

don't worry doctorjazz, there are close to 500 Merzbow albums out there to choose from from the last 35 years.

There's a Jamie Saft/Merzbow collab out there, @doc. Maybe start there.

Heard Merzbow at Victo long ago. IIRC, he played the tune that inspired "Dock," "Sittin' on the Potentiometer of the Oscillator."

Scraps i do think it's worse. i think the industry is saturated with people who's desire to be rich and famous far outweighs any talent they may have. this being the fault of the industry money machine.
i seek new music every day, and i hear new music often, introduced to me by my chosen (non-fmu) family that i never would've heard otherwise; and it's easy to say that the overwhelming majority of new sound that doesn't seem recycled and uninspired is not rap/hiphop oriented. (and i had a respectable rap/hiphop collection before many of these friends were born)

Listener Gregory:

Don't take this the wrong way, Jeff, but I'm glad the show is ending, so that I can go back and hear the parts I missed at the beginning! Great job.

Well, I must say I very much enjoyed following the music and the chat on today's program. My hands were otherwise occupied, unfortunately, with cleaning chores.

the main thing though that grates me about most rap is not the lack of musical creativity but that it's not even about the music at all. if rappers had to have musical inclinations there wouldn't be many rappers. what they're selling (and selling is the only point for the majority of them) is image and an attitude, which is an insecure, aggressive and cold one. (that kanye/jay-z abomination being an example)
- many times i've seen rap turn an entire pub into a room full of tough-guy poseurs.
