Drunken Foreigner Band:
Mind-Blowing Musical Excursions Inspired By Laotian and Isan Thai Music

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Drunken Foreigner Band plays cathartic double-neck-electric-phin-driven psych-rock workouts inspired by music of northeast Thailand and Laos.

Interest in this music has grown in recent years both inside and outside of Thailand. This Vice article / segment provides a good introduction: http://tiny.cc/vice-isan-music.

The band, featuring members of Sunwatchers, Invisible Circle and other adventurous Brooklyn outfits, celebrates the release of debut full-length LP White Guy Disease on Electric Cowbell Records with two live showcases pegged to the annual APAP arts booking conference:

They'll be at Secret Project Robot in Bushwick on Friday night January 12th along with The Messthetics, Mourning A BLKstar and Yotoco.

And they're one of eight great globally-inspired bands playing the Secret Planet showcase at Drom, 85 Ave A. in the East Village on Saturday night January 13th. Also on the bill: Christylez Bacon & Nistha Raj's Bhairavi Beatbox / Kaleta & Super Yamba Band / Bulla en el Barrio / / Mourning A BLKstar / Combo Chimbita / Anbessa Orchestra / Hearing Things.

(Friday night’s showcase is produced by Electric Cowbell and Multiflora Productions; Saturday night’s showcase is produced by Electric Cowbell / Multiflora Productions and Barbès.)

Massive thanks to our illustrious engineer Tom Unish!

Seconded! It's keeping the cold far, far away.
Avatar 6:56pm βrian:

Trying to read this playlist is like walking into a blizzard. Except that the soundtrack is superlative.
Avatar 7:02pm βrian:

For example, are we to infer that the Drunken Foreigner Band is playing live on tonight's show? I'm-a just confused.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Webhamster Henry:

A band my band plays with a lot, Andes Manta, is also playing at APAP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Rob W:

Thanks Henry. Good evening everyone! βrian: Yes - Drunken Foreigner band is tonight's live musical guest.
Avatar 7:09pm βrian:

And now I know how to pronounce "phin!"
  7:22pm Paddy MeBoy:

These guys rule!
  7:41pm Paddy MeBoy:

What did he say the meaning of White Guy Disease is? I want to make sure I don't have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Rob W:

I think basically playing fast and loud doesn't necessarily mean it's good! Although I'd need to roll back the tape to confirm that...
Avatar 7:43pm Jim McHugh:

White Guy Disease -- the musical simplex, at least -- is when one mistakes speed and volume for intensity and quality.
  7:44pm Paddy MeBoy:

The better half explained that it was "confusing intensity with loudness and speed"?
Avatar 7:45pm Jim McHugh:

There are lethal social, psychic and political simplexes running rampant these days; they are to be quarantined and combated whatever the cost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Rob W:

Thanks Jim!
  7:46pm Paddy MeBoy:

Hmmm... sounds like the hardcore pink scene lol.
  7:47pm Paddy MeBoy:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm coelacanth∅:

heh "dr.bronners style"!
Avatar 8:17pm Scraps:

Contrariwise, playing slow and quiet doesn’t mean you’re being thoughtful, spooky, etc.
Avatar 8:18pm Scraps:

(Not, of course, talking about the band now)
  8:27pm Carmichael:

Finally, hello Rob and those of you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Megaroni:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Rob W:

Good call Bas - that's a Bulgarian song - Blato Zlato (which means "Swamp Gold" in Bulgarian - they're based in New Orleans), focus a lot on Bulgarian repertoire.

Thanks, Rob. More fun coming next week, I'm sure.
