Hey coelacanth∅, I went to that grocery store but didn't see any of the vinegar you were talking about. Maybe because the focus is more Korean than Japanese. Took a photo of the sesame oils though. I think almost everything on the top three rows is sesame oil. Plus more around the corner in cans! https://www.dropbox.com/s/b1k82sip6gufwjp/IMG_1245.JPG?dl=0

yeah that krokofant was pretty killer, thought i was reading krokodil. segways ≠segues

nice selection rw. nothing like that around here - though if i ever get down to wfmu headquarters there's a "little japan" near there (last i knew)...although i'm pretty happy with the (not too exotic) one i've been getting. i like to try new things.
and the umeboshi vinegar is not only a japanese thing but maybe a "macrobiotic" thing; so it's not even necessarily in the households of japanese folks who cook traditionally.
-you can get it at health food stores, and on line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09am
coelacanth∅:

hi Fox!
  1:11am
yippie:

i think Japanese people especially like macrobiotics
  1:13am
yippie:

ive seen japanese libraries that are basically 1000s of anime comics and 20 macrobiotic cookbooks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am
coelacanth∅:

yeah the diet in japan generally is much "cleaner" and basic than it is in the us, so it's more like macrobiotics, even if most people don't give a shit about the theories. i don't know how many people in japan consciously follow the guidelines of macrobiotics. i'll guess not many.
Avatar 1:19am
Fox:

Hey Coel!

i used to see patti smith at a macrobiotic japanese restaurant in soho called Suen
  1:22am
yippie:

prince corner sullivan
  1:22am
rw:

I'll keep looking. I did get some pretty delicious brown rice and made up my mind to visit that store more often. It's a nice bike ride from here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22am
coelacanth∅:

that could work, if you had something else to pay the bills...like maybe a small animation short theatre - cheap, but not free.
  1:25am
yippie:

patti smith is not from japan i think shes from NJ but she is really into that macrobiotics
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am
coelacanth∅:

i used to go to suen, when i lived right across the hudson. pretty nourishing i guess but really boring! (& overpriced)
my cooking is at least as nutritious and much tastier! (if i do say so myself - which i do!)
Avatar 1:28am
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Souen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28am
coelacanth∅:

i remember that about her. haven't thought about it in a while.
  1:29am
yippie:

yeah i know what you mean, that place is more about the atmosphere and it puts girls in a good mood knowing that this food won't make them fat.. but patti smith is like 70 and she looks like 50
Avatar 1:29am
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Souen's one of the last macro places still open in NYC; I love it. Quantum Leap also still standing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30am
coelacanth∅:

yeah Patti's a good advertisement for a good diet.
  1:31am

You guys are making me hungry. I know I may have started it, but still...

Nick, the show's sounding great as it always does!
  1:31am

and i love that garden house with 1000s of plants right across from souen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am
coelacanth∅:

i know i've been to quantum leap too but i don't remember it at all. there used to be a macro/vegan place upper east, near sloan ketering(sp?), but i know that one's gone. it was good.

been to manna, angelica's and candle cafe. it's a blur though. i remember angelica's having an herb shop as well, but they didn't carry as much as the store i worked in in scotch plains.
Avatar 1:39am
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

You're thinking of Angelika's, an herb place, vs. Angelica Kitchen which was only a restaurant
