Hello all! So glad you all tuned in. No idea where I will be taking us tonight so hang tight - but hopefully it will be fun. Yes - DocJazz. It’s is the first time I have worked the mixtape idea this way. The thought and level of intensity that most put into this really took me by surprise a bit. They are an amazing class - but this has been next level. The music is melancholy and happy and a little schizophrenic, a little self-centered, but honest. I feel really honored to see this side of my students. Music does heal the soul.
I can see from my 2 daughters that making significant or cool playlists (for Spotify or similar) is really important to them, programmed around a theme or an idea. Just Mixtapes without the tape...

I used to do that on tape, then later cd, when I had more energy and time...
I did too - it was an expression of everything I didn’t quite know how to say or full process at 15. Having the feeling but maybe not the sense of articulation. They use the song as a vehicle for processing the emotion. It’s cartharic, I think.

Hey Jeff, was away yesterday, missed the show, have to check it out in the archives! Saw talk about your move in the comments, how's it going?
@doctorjazz: Yah, missed you! We're about to sign the lease...starting to deal with all of the...stuff...trying to wrap our heads around it all. And planning on donating a bunch of CDs to the station.
Still going to be in the Slope or Brooklyn? I'm sure you've gotten the CDs ripped to hard drive...
I moved out of Park Slope about 20 years ago, like where we are, but do miss Brooklyn...
Moving the records, CDs and stereo gear was the hardest part of the move to Jersey...the movers gave me looks to kill when they carried the boxes of records, which can be small, but still amazingly heavy.
Just a quick NY political note, @Jeff, if you're going to be in the very weirdly-shaped NY Senate district 20, pls consider voting for Zellnor Myrie for state Senate on 9/13. Sadly I'm less than half a block outside of NY SD20, stuck in slimebag Simcha Felder's zone. NY politics is weird.
All kinds at all times - I say. It felt good at the time, so I go with it. I love the song at some point in my life... my mom played the hell out of the BW record on 8 track... i remember that.
