Recent tech news:

Facebook Is Patenting Technology to Spy on You Through Your Smartphone Camera and Microphone: "Not to worry," says Facebook VP Allen Lo, head of intellectual property. "Most of the technology outlined in these patents has not been included in any of our products, and never will be," he told the Times in an email. These are patents for (a) using your device's front facing camera to read your facial expressions and determine how you feel about what you see on the screen, (b) using your phone's microphone to eavesdrop on you, determining what television programs you're watching and whether the ads are muted, (c) using your phone's location in the middle of the night to try to determine where you live (or at least sleep), and (d) using your posts and messages--and credit card transactions--to predict your major life events, such as a birth, marriage, graduation or death.

• Below, from The Onion on June 14: “I know I screwed up, and I understand why you’re all upset, but if you were a morally corrupt megalomaniac hell-bent on manipulating society to your twisted whims, you would have done the exact same thing,” said Zuckerberg.

I love what this guy is explaining! The reality is a lot of the “screen time”” debate is (honestly) a first world problem. Homeless people use social media to keep connected. I know that the death of the old Internet is sad, but I am not too sure discarding social media will bring that back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
joe mulligan:

LTV of an American FB user is way more than one in India, and US MAUs need to keep trending up; one person may not be much but a drop in the chart makes a big differencce
  6:42pm
JakeGould:

Also, as far as recycling goes… It’s admirable in some ways but is entirely hypocritical in other ways.

How many “reusable” bags are not reused and just discarded each day?

I believe the death we are experiencing nowadays is the death of the local in favor of the global. No social media network is good for local stuff. It’s all on large scale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm

i.e. "Twitter Quitters" was a huge MAUs problem just a few years ago and problematic... until the likes of Trump and other celebrities boosted engagment

i remember when a midtown office i worked in put two garbage baskets in every office, one for recycling. first time i worked late the cleaning staff came in and dumped both baskets in the same bin. what a sham!

Twitter is such bullshit because you can fake accounts so easily. I mean there are businesses out there that hook you up with fake followers? If these networks really worked THAT would not be possible.

The author said the most vexing thing is that Facebook isn't even something members "consume." So that's kind of it, isn't it? The claim should put paid to the notion that you can find new access to political power through your "lifestyle choices" and "shopping dollar."

Re: recycling, I think the solution is making serious reuse a priority instead of just throwing up our hands. I do appreciate the allure of despair these days though...in fact, give me five minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
melinda:

I think the comparison to recycling and environmental action is useful. We can't change the system solely with individual consumer choices, but making those individual choices (recycling, composting, quitting facebook, whatever) serves as an important example of the change we'd like to see. Symbolism matters even if it isn't a game changer.

Evan From Seattle:

i really disagree with the author saying that its pointless to delete your facebook. I deleted my account a year or two ago and have never looked back. I refuse to be part of that surveillance apparatus. I know even having my account deleted doesn't even completely remove me from their spying, and yeah I'm only one person and I don't make a difference alone. But if more people had the guts to walk away, they'd lose some power. But as a society we're too scared and vain to. I think the stance that "yeah they're undermining democracy but here's why i'm not leaving facebook" illustrates perfectly the unwillingness most people have to put their money where their mouth is.

Brad Parscale: I understood early that Facebook was how Donald Trump was going to win. Twitter is how he talked to the people. Facebook was going to be how he won.

Lesley Stahl: And Facebook IS how he won.

Brad Parscale: I think so. I think Donald Trump won, but I think Facebook was the method -- it was the highway in which his car drove on.

Donald Trump on Twitter has saved Twitter. Think about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Fredericks: I'm struck by George Carlin's observation that what the Powers That Be *really* didn't like about Hitler was the competition...

What I can't understand is why all these Monopolies like Zuckerbird aren't challenged if there's such a market - like he shut down MySpace...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm
Buffalo's Tom:

Melinda, I agree. You do have to create a change of consciousness and make it the "normal" thing to do which is sometimes as easy as doing it oneself visibly and not self-righteously. And symbolism is very important in this. There's culture war's intertwined with everything these days.
