Mike, not saying I disagree because I'm not familiar enough, but was Keith's playing sloppy in the recent clips you referenced? What was lousy about it? And I agree 1,000% that the "badass" image is tired as heck. Nothing rebellious about it at all. You know what Jane's Addictiom said 30 years ago...

I find it appropriate that the Beachmen and the Ramones are the first two in the Music Matters series. Although I can't think of a single objective thing they have in common, I always thought the Ramones were a natural extension of the Beach Boys. Maybe it's just that they're both so damn American.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
Mike Sin:

Keith basically, at this point, projects the image his fans want him to project. He was never really a "bad ass"... No highly popular rock star ever really is... They behave a particular is a very tight bubble and the world reacts... Keith is one of a kind and completely fabulous as a musician, performer, and songwriter, though.
  12:10pm
dymphnite:

Part of the problem is that Mick stopped singing with any emotional intent after ‘72, and became a full time dervish.
  12:13pm
Russ:

@Mike Sin sounds like KR is enslaved to what his fans expect of him image-wise, then? That doesnt sound very liberating. I think there are downsides to having your ego stroked for decades. Someone like John Frusciante, on the other hand, has the right idea

Christgau was good on this: "And for the most part Jagger was a disgrace. Once his slurs had teased, made jokes, held out double meanings; now his refusal to pronounce final dentals--the "good" and "should" of "Brown Sugar," for example--conveyed bored, arrogant indolence, as if he couldn't be bothered hoisting his tongue to the roof of his mouth."

Thanks, Michael! I have the 1st reissue of "Two Sides..", which only has a few bonus cuts (& doesn't include that version of the song). Wasn't aware that they reissued it w/a bonus disc (! incredible for something this marginal), I wonder how much "better" it is than the original.

Saw the Stones 3 times (the last in '03, the Garden show that was on HBO) and they were always great/together. Saw some clips of them a few years ago that were definitely embarrassing, then saw that "Summer Sun" concert from Hyde Park on cable a few eyars ago, and they still sounded good...so maybe (like McCartney & other "veterans") they have good nights & bad night? (Also, The Last Waltz is one of the best concert movies ever, band squabbles/controversies notwithstanding.)

yes, one thing about the stones is their many phases - the early records with so many covers, their poppy mid 60s stuff, the records that show their interesting transition into a harder band, Exile and the next few... then Some Girls, then the 80s records (which I mostly like), then...
