Recent Tech News

The Facts About Facebook, op-ed by Mark Zuckerberg (WSJ, Jan 24): "We’re all distrustful of systems we don’t understand."

TechCrunch's response to Zuckerberg (Jan 26): "The seeds of Facebook’s global business were thus sown in a crude and consentless game of clickbait whose idea titillated [Zuckerberg] so much [that he] thought nothing of breaching security, privacy, copyright and decency norms just to grab a few eyeballs."

The Greatest Con Man in History (Bob Hoffman, Jan 27): "For years I have been saying that Facebook's numbers are a joke and that anyone who believes them is an idiot. But I've never thought the scale of their deceit was this deep. As I reported several weeks ago, in a recent 12-month period Facebook removed 2.8 billion fake accounts. If Greenspan is right, there are plenty remaining and Facebook is guilty of an enormous fraud. People should be going to jail."

• On the World Economic Forum, Kevin Roose writes: I went to Davos this year and came away with two main observations:
1) CEOs are *obsessed* with AI and machine learning
2) the private conversations they're having about automation and jobs are very, very different than the public ones Read the whole column. (NYT, Jan 25). "For an unvarnished view of how some American leaders talk about automation in private, you have to listen to their counterparts in Asia, who often make no attempt to hide their aims."

• And from Scott Galloway's newsletter (Jan 25): "Corporations need to be more transparent; consumers expect them to play a more positive role in society. The above is a decent summary of every talk at Davos... In the words of Anand Giridharadas, Davos is a fire safety convention that invites arsonists. Yes, in pursuit of "improving the state of the world," the World Economic Forum invites people who have made the most money while doing the most damage (Sheryl Sandberg's talk was titled "What Kind of Internet Do We Want?"). I don't know, Sheryl, maybe one that doesn't inspire genocide, polarization, or teen depression? A gathering replete with 25 people worth more than the Southern Hemisphere to discuss income inequality feels a bit obtuse. "

Hey Mark!

Hey everyone: Been playing with fasting for some time. I do a 22 hour fast daily (dinner only), and recently did a 3 day water fast. Biggest thing I notice is how much time slows down. The day feels so much longer when not broken up by breakfast/lunch/dinner. Any one else have this experience?

Hi Mark, we were just talking about the Tech Pie this morning, as a biologist and customer of 23andme who found some inaccurate results I can say that reading the sequence is science but interpreting the sequence is still and probably always be an estimate. I don't have an issue with that, it's still interesting! I am just curious if the error was in reading the sequence or the interpretation? And as a customer, I think 23andme does their job in trying to explain this complex process and caveats to their product to a lay person.

rushkoff was on here TEN YEARS AGO? shit...time is flying by.

It’s true. None of this needs to be said. Only a human could be arrogant enough to think that something he created is so amazing that he now has to justify his own existence in relation to it.

melinda:

This is inspiring and timely for me. I have been despairing over political polarization and lack of empathy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm
Mark Hurst:

Hi Vanessa, thanks for tuning in. What struck me the most about that story was that *twins*, with identical DNA, got different results. Analysis/interpretation is of course necessary, but if twins don't get the same result, that raises questions about the integrity of the process.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
Mark Hurst:

Thanks, Melinda & Sam! And Dale - same thought here.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Webhamster Henry:

The results are sometimes more honest than others - since Ashkenazi Jews got shuttled all over the place, they don't attempt to say what country (whatever that is) that are "from". The whole idea of original home is kind of specious. Maybe people shouldn't be classed, since the real differences are so small.

I figure alienation really evolved long before computers -- when class systems separated people from older tribal communal life where the "irreducible minimum" had kept everyone alive, in a circle of humans. (It sounds simplistic to say, for such a long period of time.)

the mistake our generation made was to ever believe we were different than any other generation. I grew up believing in counter culture iseals and so did all my friends. None of them believe in it anymore and I think its because they got comfortable. As soon as people get wealthy they realize how much they have to lose and give up on the ideals if their youth. The tech gen is no different and big business new that.
