Google CEO Sundar Pichai's NYT op-ed (May 7): "To make privacy real, we give you clear, meaningful choices around your data. All while staying true to two unequivocal policies: that Google will never sell any personal information to third parties; and that you get to decide how your information is used. . . . a small subset of data helps serve ads that are relevant and that provide the revenue that keeps Google products free and accessible. [Mark notes: this is the data necessary for service improvement and largely irrelevant to Google's surveillance-and-control model.] That revenue also sustains a broad community of content creators, which in turn helps keep content on the web free for everyone. [Mark notes: just like flat-earth YouTubers!]"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Mark Hurst:

Accountability is a good little word... too bad Google has said, on the record, that they intend to elude it ("we'll take responsibility but not liability," said a Google rep to UK Parliament a few weeks ago)

JakeGould:

Facebook recruiters (staff at Facebook) once emailed me at my personal email address like 4-5 years ago trying to get me to work for them. My first question, “How did you get my email address?” and they then proudly told me how they had profiled me from data culled from multiple sources that connected an un-public address to me and thus the contact. My response was basically, “Not interested. Just take me off your mailing list.”

Like I would be impressed by being deep stalked?

Could be worse, Jake, Apple contacted me to work on Apple Maps while I was employed years ago (had no idea how they tracked me down), after three interviews, I was told that they were only hiring in-house (and it paid 6 figures [ I have 2 figures in my bank account, currently])
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm

Yes. This mindset seems to have now permeated all the industries Prof. Zuboff is listing now.

@Mark: The lead of the project said the decision came from above out of nowhere. They lost out, as Apple Maps still sucks (google maps is more accurate, and crowdsources for free)
