The Future of America's Contest with China (by Evan Osnos in the New Yorker, Jan 6, 2020):
Xu told me she is “pro-China,” and I asked what she meant. “Most people who are within the sphere of the West kind of reflexively look at China and see, ‘Oh, wow, totalitarian dictatorship, oppression, no human rights, suffering.’ Just evil, right? To be ‘pro-China’ is simply to realize that’s not right; there is much more going on. It’s not perfect, but it’s just simply an alternative system.” She went on, “I would say that the ideals of human rights are not bad to aim for, but it’s not a universal, God-given thing. It was something that was consensus-driven at a certain point in Western history. If you look at Chinese social progression, things are genuinely getting better for most people, despite the problems. It’s more of a battle of narratives about values.”

i have communicated with animal rights activists in China over the years -- they are totally driven and dedicated, but i have never forgotten what one woman expressed to me (approximately 12 years ago): human rights are basically non-existent, so getting people to care about "non-humans" is really difficult -- yet, they press on and keep fighting, for ALL beings' rights

Good article in the Jacobin about SpaceX and Musk and Bezos and how they imaginatively paint continued worker exploitation into the space future while also perpetuating it in the here and now. Short version: Bezos loves but fundamentally doesn't understand _The Expanse_.

Hi Mark - Enjoyed your discussion on US vs. China, but wondering how you favor US, but disparage US capitalism which is at least as important to our values as the Declaration of Independence. These companies, right or wrong, are doing what America encourages and rewards...whatever you can get away with. Quite the values system!
