Just like "computer", the term applied to a range of devices, including those that worked with punch cards and those that were fancy adding machines. He job today might've been considered data entry, or something else depending on the type of tabulation.

So when the DJ hears something that needs to be bleeped, the DJ memorizes the sequence of words around that, then listens to it via headphones as it goes out, and makes the cut at the appropriate time. if they're good, they can cut VERY close around it.

The DJ wears headphones that carry the real time material going out, which is on a delay from what's coming off the record. The DJ is ALSO listening to it as it comes off the record. So when the DJ hears something that needs to be bleeped, the DJ memorizes the sequence of words around that, then listens to it via headphones as it goes out, and makes the cut at the appropriate time. if they're good, they can cut VERY close around it.
