I've always had a fondness for three-word combinations whose meaning can change depending on which word you stress. Dead Sea Apes, Huge Ass Beers (a joint in the French Quarter), George Carlin's "Ranger Dan and his Big Dog Dick".

Funny that they can tell us where it came from with such certainty, as if it even matters at this point, and yet Contact Tracing is getting absolutely no support as something to employ and put real effort into to ensure we can open up safely.

Ah! Nick, that's what I suspected, but I couldn't figure out if the glitch was in the actual show or just the archive. Makes sense. Sorry the show got cut off, but glad you were able to get some extra sleep!

Carlin put out a new hour long special almost every year, didn't he? I should plow through those as something to listen to when I need words but don't want current events.

@Jake: I wonder if they would sue me for copyright infringement. Could they, if it is legally my name? Maybe if I use and ampersand or an 'n' instead?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08am

Carlin's always a balm for the soul, Fox. Regarding stories on NYC as the US epicenter, the New Orleans Times-Picayune's headline thankfully avoids sensationalism: "How did coronavirus get to Louisiana? New York is possible source, but scientists aren't sure"

I mean... fuck, I'm not surprised if it IS where most US cases came from. Everyone left to stay at whatever bucolic home town they came from to get their two-five years in Brooklyn cred. The same assholes who are trying to sublet their furnished apartments.

Nobody wanted to be stuck in their sunless, overpriced shitholes. Most of these folks never thought of NYC as home, only as a place to crash, y'know?

Nick - I'm currently on a macbook from 2009 I just brought back from the dead with a SSD. I also have a macbook pro from 2013 that I use constantly. It is on it's last legs and was brought back from death during the whole macbook pro soldering fiasco that plagued this model. When I tried to install a SSD in that one, I opened it up to find that the battery was super swollen (!!), so I had to remove it, and now it won't stay on. Technically it SHOULD be able to work perfectly fine without a battery as long as it's plugged in, but it just keeps restarting. Not sure if it's worth buying a new battery or not. Cheaper than a new computer, I guess.... but I really need something new, regardless.

@Fox: Pretty sure they are closed nowadays because of all of this, but the Lower East Side Ecology Center’s E-Warehouse on President Street actually sells older MacBooks for a decent price. They refurb machines and have a decent selection. They might even be open to diagnosing an issue… But then again who knows when they will reopen?

BH:

I've actually been using a desktop more than a laptop for the last few years. Starting when my laptop was trying to kill itself via update.
The laptop is still around as the secondary device. It's 6 yrs old and has various flaws (some of the keyboard keys don't work and the power connector is probably pushed in a little).

I use a Panasonic Toughbook laptop that a previous employer never sent me a Mailer with which to return. Tis old--Windows 7...but it has a touchscreen, and I have personally seen them run over, punched, and dropped out of second story windows by disgruntled techs-- they really ARE tough! I had a customer tell me one of them saved her life by taking a bullet from an angry insurance claimant.
  1:55am
JakeGould:

The new MacBook Air (2020) is really the best of the new models of the MacBook Airs. The thing is those stupid butterfly keyboards are horrible. Even if they didn’t break for dumb reasons they felt like crap. I have used all three iterations and the 2020 model is the only one that has a decent keyboard since it’s a lot like the older MacBook keyboards. Wow! What a crazy idea!
  1:56am
BH:

Upon reflection, I forgot that the location of my laptop charging port (middle-back) has annoyed me for awhile. It would be a good location if I used it in a layout where the cord could drop to the floor behind the laptop (which I don't). So instead it goes middle-back, left corner, left side, then to the floor. Partly because the USB port is also in the back, so I can't use it with the cord where it is.

i didn't like the 2019 mbp 13 nor the 2019 macbook air keyboards. the 2019 mbp 16 keyboard was better, but i still like my 2009 mbp keyboard best, for the most part. have to try the 2020 air (didn't realize new kybd)

That was Raga Manj Khamaj and not Sindhi Bhairavi, right? Or am I looking at it wrong?

JakeGould:

@spidiodi: They also fixed another issue with the older MacBook Air keyboards: The arrow keys now are properly 1/2 height on the 2020 model as they used to be. If you are typing and move your hand to them now you immediately know they are arrow keys. The 2018 and 2019 models had full height keys that you couldn’t just feel to find. Look at pics to see what I mean.
