Trump in 1989, in response to Tianamen Square, from an interview in Playboy: “When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it,” Trump said. “Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak.”

TDK60: I heard about that...didn't see the video. He so pissed off the police during his first administration, that he now is loath to say anything that might offend them. In his defense, this situation was pretty overwhelming, city-wide...not sure if anyone else would have been able to control it. The heavy police reaction, though, was exactly not what was needed.

I'll speak clearly, bluntly. DeBlasio is a phoney progressive. He deserved overripe tomatoes in my opinion.
Avatar 7:23am
Deborah:

@Fredericks: Early mornings have now become reflective. Sometimes I remember commuting to Jersey City and actually seeing students, colleagues, and feeling that momentary rush of a college classroom. That was in the Before Time and will not occur again until at least January 2021, if then.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26am
Jeffrey Davison:

He is a disappointment, for sure. Believe me, I want him to succeed. I live here, and I want this city to be a better place. One reason that Bloomberg was successful, on many fronts, is that he didn't come from the political scene here, and he owed far few political favors. I know he had his failings, and I remember the Republican convention here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27am

JD and Tdk60 democracy now aired a clip of him getting booed. It is a bummer his terms have turned out the way they have.
I want him to do well and for the city to handle these crises in a exemplary way. I wonder how much of it is the union having him on a short leash, or the boys in blue just not giving an ef and wanting the administration to look bad...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37am
Jeffrey Davison:

kevlicki: some unions still wield a lot of power, the police being one of them. Not sure they want the administration to look bad, though. What's in it for them?

Been listening to some righteously fine jazz this morning, "Who Sent You?" by Irreversible Entanglements (on International Anthems). Not necessarily for this show but that label has so much gold-dust, and much of it perfect for these times.
