Second set featured custom made instruments, and a little too long for me, I thought they tended to get lost sometimes in exploring the sounds. That should get better eventually as they get used to them. Interesting though. And so good to hear live music again

	🦀 ♥ 10:26am Listener Gregory: Pachora! That group was revelatory when I first encountered it. And then I followed most of the group's members for years since. I think they started out as more of a Balkan-free jazz group originally. You hear a tiny bit of that here, in the guitar (mandolin?).

	♥ 10:33am Jeff Golick: In re storage: when we last moved about three years ago, we took a "short-term" storage unit, in order to manage all of the crap we'd accumulated in 20 years at the old place. Well, cut to three years later and we've given up and surrendered to the idea that we need to keep this (expensive) unit, for our sanity. Brought some stuff over yesterday. Wife Kate pointed to a box of random CDs...and then just looked at me, blankly.

I do that every year or so (though not this one). The point is that when I look for a record, I'll find another one I hadn't thought about. I organize for confusion

	🦀 ♥ 10:36am Listener Gregory: @Jeff, my sisters took a temporary storage unit back in... oh, 2005 maybe? And it is still there, racking up the monthly fees. If they had just given all the stuff away, they could have bought new items with the money saved from storage fees (given that most of it was not ever needed). That said, getting rid of boxes of CDs is madness!

	10:44am DJpeterDE: I swear by Bags Unlimited: all my single CDs are in polythene gatefold (booklet on one side, tray and disk on other, folds flat. Jewel box is 3 times too bulky. Of course something like hat art stays in the cardboard sleeve. Love that design! Blue note seems to have switched over to slim cardboard too.
	🦀 ♥ 10:45am doctorjazz: Really liked Quintopolous, a and Ray Anderson is a long timelove! @Fred-pretty much the same way for physical media, last name or band name, though I ran out of shelf space at one point, so stuff after that is just "newer arrivals" (got more shelving, about full, extending out to other rooms). Digital is a mish mash-the computer generally does First name, so mostly it's that way, but some come "Last name, first name", and in slowly changing it to that format (maybe get to this when I retire, or, as my old Rabbis used to say, "When the Messiah comes".
	🦀 ♥ 10:46am Listener Gregory: @DJpeter, I use plastic sleeves made specifically for CDs, which I put into a CD shelf/drawer of some kind. The jewel boxes are truly ridiculous in their use of space.

	11:03am Dean: Missing from the above @10:55, however, is specification of the element used to file, i.e., the "main entry" for the catalog record. Author/performer? Title of the piece? Composer? As do I, @hyde. Lacking a card catalog or database to support discovery of syndetic relationships and alternative access points among the artists and works, I have to rely on a faltering memory.

	11:09am Dean: The problem for me with audiophile-versus-other storage is twofold: first, it exposes the obsession with recording sound quality abstracted from the musical performance itself; and second, some absolutely amazing recordings are not deemed audiophile, e.g., a lot of the work Marc Aubort and Joanna Nickrenz did for Nonesuch. I guess a third concern is that some badly made recordings are nevertheless supreme performances.

The music would often be incredibly mediocre, but you would have to admit, "Boy, you really hear each string of that guitar! Gee, dig that stereo separation!"

	🦀 ♥ 11:14am doctorjazz: Dean @11:09, I absolutely agree with you. It came about that way because I had a good friend, an Audiophile, who bought up collections, kept the better copy, and gave me the leftovers organized that way (sadly, at some point he just sold them on eBay).
	11:17am Dean: The stereo store I frequented in the '80s at least played good stuff, too, including "badly made recordings" that "are nevertheless supreme performances," e.g., Furtwangler's Bruckner 5 from DG's Dokumente series. But they also played great recordings of great performances, e.g., Marianne Schroeder's early Feldman recital on hatHut, Piano. Rarely had to endure yet another spin of Famous Blue Raincoat.
	🦀 ♥ 11:18am doctorjazz: @Fred, she sort of knew that she was being nice and giving me the living room for the stereo and records. But I think she hadn't thought ahead that it wasn't a closed system...she did figure that out at some point, and i guess had made peace with it.

The Brooklyn store I liked, which is now in Manhattan, had a salesman with terrific taste, Wes Phillips, and I had great fun bringing stuff and listening with him. (He later became a writer at Stereophile, then passed away at a young age)

	11:27am Dean: There's a Van der Graaf Generator tune, "W." Hamill puns off it. I could never bring myself to attend a high end audio show. I much preferred establishing relationships with boutique retailers, e.g., Havens & Hardesty in OC. Bill Mohline, now an architect, was a knowledgeable salesman there. He designed some covers for Okka Disk during the '90s.
	11:31am Dean: On a trip to NYC I made a pilgrimage to Sound by Singer, just 'cause. I walked in and confessed I had no intention of buying, but just wanted to see the gear on display. The salesperson was completely accommodating. Sat me down in front of a pair of Krell monoblocks the size of coffee tables (or so my memory exaggerates). Never been a fan of Krell, but the sheer monumentality was impressive.

But, by the end of the day, stuff just started sounding the same (I u used to review jazz for an Audiophile magazine, The Audiophile Voice, occasionally, so it let me meet some folks, and didn't cost me anything).

	11:38am Dean: I think you nailed it, @doctorjazz. The prospect of eight hours of high-calorie audio doesn't seem all that appetizing. I once strolled into H&H and had a weird sense that something had changed sonically. Indeed, they had just introduced a new pair of amplifiers. I felt vindicated, and yet I also know that my ability to listen critically is compromised by a host of factors for which no double-blind testing can control.

Second set featured custom made instruments, and a little too long for me, I thought they tended to get lost sometimes in exploring the sounds. That should get better eventually as they get used to them. Interesting though. And so good to hear live music again

	🦀 ♥ 10:26am Listener Gregory: Pachora! That group was revelatory when I first encountered it. And then I followed most of the group's members for years since. I think they started out as more of a Balkan-free jazz group originally. You hear a tiny bit of that here, in the guitar (mandolin?).

Well, cut to three years later and we've given up and surrendered to the idea that we need to keep this (expensive) unit, for our sanity. Brought some stuff over yesterday. Wife Kate pointed to a box of random CDs...and then just looked at me, blankly.

I do that every year or so (though not this one). The point is that when I look for a record, I'll find another one I hadn't thought about. I organize for confusion

If they had just given all the stuff away, they could have bought new items with the money saved from storage fees (given that most of it was not ever needed). That said, getting rid of boxes of CDs is madness!

	10:44am DJpeterDE: I swear by Bags Unlimited: all my single CDs are in polythene gatefold (booklet on one side, tray and disk on other, folds flat. Jewel box is 3 times too bulky. Of course something like hat art stays in the cardboard sleeve. Love that design! Blue note seems to have switched over to slim cardboard too.
	🦀 ♥ 10:45am doctorjazz: Really liked Quintopolous, a and Ray Anderson is a long timelove! @Fred-pretty much the same way for physical media, last name or band name, though I ran out of shelf space at one point, so stuff after that is just "newer arrivals" (got more shelving, about full, extending out to other rooms). Digital is a mish mash-the computer generally does First name, so mostly it's that way, but some come "Last name, first name", and in slowly changing it to that format (maybe get to this when I retire, or, as my old Rabbis used to say, "When the Messiah comes".
	🦀 ♥ 10:46am Listener Gregory: @DJpeter, I use plastic sleeves made specifically for CDs, which I put into a CD shelf/drawer of some kind. The jewel boxes are truly ridiculous in their use of space.

	🦀 ♥ 11:00am Listener Gregory: Berio is an interesting figure, who started out doing atonal composition like this and then began to explore traditional Italian folk songs and other less formal compositions. His ECM album Voci, with Kim Kashkashian, is a favorite of mine.

	11:03am Dean: Missing from the above @10:55, however, is specification of the element used to file, i.e., the "main entry" for the catalog record. Author/performer? Title of the piece? Composer? As do I, @hyde. Lacking a card catalog or database to support discovery of syndetic relationships and alternative access points among the artists and works, I have to rely on a faltering memory.

	11:09am Dean: The problem for me with audiophile-versus-other storage is twofold: first, it exposes the obsession with recording sound quality abstracted from the musical performance itself; and second, some absolutely amazing recordings are not deemed audiophile, e.g., a lot of the work Marc Aubort and Joanna Nickrenz did for Nonesuch. I guess a third concern is that some badly made recordings are nevertheless supreme performances.

The music would often be incredibly mediocre, but you would have to admit, "Boy, you really hear each string of that guitar! Gee, dig that stereo separation!"

	11:17am Dean: The stereo store I frequented in the '80s at least played good stuff, too, including "badly made recordings" that "are nevertheless supreme performances," e.g., Furtwangler's Bruckner 5 from DG's Dokumente series. But they also played great recordings of great performances, e.g., Marianne Schroeder's early Feldman recital on hatHut, Piano. Rarely had to endure yet another spin of Famous Blue Raincoat.

The Brooklyn store I liked, which is now in Manhattan, had a salesman with terrific taste, Wes Phillips, and I had great fun bringing stuff and listening with him. (He later became a writer at Stereophile, then passed away at a young age)

	11:27am Dean: There's a Van der Graaf Generator tune, "W." Hamill puns off it. I could never bring myself to attend a high end audio show. I much preferred establishing relationships with boutique retailers, e.g., Havens & Hardesty in OC. Bill Mohline, now an architect, was a knowledgeable salesman there. He designed some covers for Okka Disk during the '90s.
	11:31am Dean: On a trip to NYC I made a pilgrimage to Sound by Singer, just 'cause. I walked in and confessed I had no intention of buying, but just wanted to see the gear on display. The salesperson was completely accommodating. Sat me down in front of a pair of Krell monoblocks the size of coffee tables (or so my memory exaggerates). Never been a fan of Krell, but the sheer monumentality was impressive.

But, by the end of the day, stuff just started sounding the same (I u used to review jazz for an Audiophile magazine, The Audiophile Voice, occasionally, so it let me meet some folks, and didn't cost me anything).

	11:38am Dean: I think you nailed it, @doctorjazz. The prospect of eight hours of high-calorie audio doesn't seem all that appetizing. I once strolled into H&H and had a weird sense that something had changed sonically. Indeed, they had just introduced a new pair of amplifiers. I felt vindicated, and yet I also know that my ability to listen critically is compromised by a host of factors for which no double-blind testing can control.
