Hey, coela.

spod, my aunt still remembers when she and her dad were working on the farm and a guy came by on a motorcycle and hit a deer just down the road and took off most of his front. They threw him in the Ford (it *was* Michigan) and drove him 25 miles to the closest hospital. He made it and came back the next year to thank them.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
coelacanth∅:

the bike vs. deer aspect seems like a good argument for (intentionally, like harleys) loud bikes.
i feel like that loudness issue has worked to that benefit with various cars i've had. or maybe i've just been very very...Very lucky

it was pretty gnarly, David, but i was very lucky. rib pain, road rash (150ft+ worth), and a scar on my left butt cheek, where an antler found it's way ~2 inches deep (anywhere else would have been a bigger problem
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
coelacanth∅:

jeez, spodi that IS lucky
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
Ike:

@Spod, I misread the way you used "beating" there and at first I thought you'd hit the deer with your bike and then started beating up the deer to finish him off, instead of "taking a beating". I was like, wow, you're strong.
Avatar 🚂 1:31pm
spodiodi:

i was on a Harley at the time, coel -- glad i was ... it was quiet, but a lesser/flimsier bike would have been worse -- it was totaled. forks were bent pretty badly

spodi as i typed that i knew you'd probably been on a harley, so wondered about holes in my theory. even a quiet harley's louder than most hondas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Ike:

...so I had a comical image in my mind of Spodiodi and a deer having a fistfight on the side of the road, the deer standing on its hind legs with a black eye, swinging and jabbing. Maybe we can get Greg from Zone 5 to illustrate this for us?

I once T-boned a Delta 88 while rocketing down a hill on my bicycle. I performed a 25 foot somersault, I was told, but I don't think I ever made direct contact with the vehicle. Mighty sore afterward.
Avatar 🚂 1:38pm
spodiodi:

also comical -- me face-down in the grass, covered in blood, and deer poop, with my handful of friends who were following me on their bikes gathered around me, my naked ass in the air, bleeding

βrian:

After that, I went out and bought a helmet.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
Handy Haversack:

spodi -- the rider's front. Pretty much no skin left. This was in the forties, so I'm not sure what kind of motorcycle it might have been, but I bet it was loud. Loudness seems double-edged -- you're as likely to scare a deer at roadside to run *into* the road.

Last time I was at the Farm a car hit a deer and knocked it onto the property -- I didn't even notice the body until the sheriff had come and gone (not that I wanted anything to do with him -- real reactionary). I didn't know what to do so just tried documenting the decomp process and fly cycles, but a hot windless day pretty much ended all scientific and aesthetic curiosity. Eventually the coyotes and bear dealt with it. I assume. Pretty sure there are no hyenas in western Michigan.

A friend of ours as killed riding her bike in Manhattan in 2008 -- helmet on. Another last year got a serious concussion in a bike-on-bike accident. I don't know how to ride a bike, but I don't have any intention of learning until they ban cars in NYC or we run out of oil to run 'em.

my dad was anti-helmet laws -- "Let those who ride decide"... but i've only not worn a motorcycle helmet once, while i was in Wyoming -- had to try it. but besides the risk, my hair got way too messed up (cheers, Rex)

truth is i always wear a helmet mountain biking, and nearly never on the road. i know there is a far greater chance of a head injury mountain biking. for me.
that's bicycle. i wear a helmet on a motorcycle no matter what -even if i'm in a state (like connecticut) that does not require it.
