buffalo springfield studio band? in the march edition of Record Collector there's an interview with Carol Kaye "ace of bass, supersession supersister" who played on thousands of studio sessions in LA... they asked her about buffalo springfield "did you sit in with the other band members, or was it all stdio guys playing their parts" she replies, "buffalo springfield were studio musicians"... now i love buffalo springfield and stills could play and sing as well as neil, and they wrote the music, but like the byrds' first album, on which only mcguinn played, i'm sure stills and young had some help...

what the hell is going on when Terry Adams can replace the entire rest of NRBQ and still call it NRBQ!!??
They are OK -JUST OK. Why does'nt Terry Adams man up and go solo piano or get a fuckin jazz group. He's a better jazz-type player than anyone. He'd be an international superstar! And he could sing a couple songs and put that dullard Diana Krall in her place as well....

I like the new record and support anything Terry does, but it shouldn't be called NRBQ without Joey. Not at this point. As much as I love the guy, the story about how the Spampinato's threw him out, it's clearly bull. Keep the Bunky & Jake coming!

while i don't begrudge Terry Adams' "right" to the "name" NRBQ, for me it is a case of "what's in a NAME?!?" my feeling is just let the name DIE - and establish ANOTHER one! (and yes, i know the WHOLE story, here) to me it wreaks of vanity. i know that johnny and joey were 'offered' IN on it, but what how does that make pete donelly looks?!? i mean, EVEN robert pollard got the clue to just let the name die, is what i say... more power to Terry's Quartet - just let the record sell itself. if it is good enough - it will sell. so, i ain't buyin' into it. no joey - no Q - joey has certainly earned as much of the right to be a weight.

good morning bob. thanks for another in a long line of great shows. Carol Kaye, while a great musician, may have a little trouble telling the truth at times. she claims to have played on some Motown songs whereas many claim that it is indisputably the great James Jamerson on the bass. it is clear to me that Young, Stills and Palmer played on the recordings and i doubt they would have welcomed studio musicians.

not the original -- there was a big band version first....and carol kaye played on some of the motown records that were recorded in los angeles. jamerson dropped off the scene, later on..

as for the Funk Brothers - jamerson dropped out of recording around '67 -- bob babbit (sp?) took his place in detroit and then when the gordy empire moved to hollywood - pretty much carol kaye was the 'brother'

sorry clarke - i didn't mean to imply that she didn't play on some Motown sessions. however, there are some specific sessions she claims to have been on that are disputed.

sure, there are disputed claims that all kinds of session players didn't play -- what i say about Buffalo Springfield is that when the band first went into the studio, just like the byrds - they weren't 'ready' for the songs. now perhaps carol kaye can't remember the exact sessions she played on, and i am sure palmer played bass - later on - on the BS sessions. all i know is one of the reasons palmer got into so much trouble is it wasn't the studio keepin' him offa the streets...

another thing is that it is UNDOUBTEDLY earl palmer playing drums on "nowadays clancy can't even sing" , for instance...so i will bet that is one of the tunes that kaye bass-ed on....i mean, there is no way that is not earl palmer

@morris &others--for the record: only the single "Mr.Tambourine Man" (&perhaps the flip) relied on studio musicians, and that was for the expediency of getting a single out quickly. The remainder of the 1st Byrds LP used all 5 Byrds.
Unlike a lot of session musicians Carol Kaye kept her gig book. But just because she played a session doesn't mean she was kept in the final mix of each song.
We'll discuss Buffalo Springfield another time.
