Favoriting January 10, 2018: New Whirled Symphony (Show #566) | Download full MP3

First new show in ages, a gorgeously playful menagerie. From weeks, moments, emptiness, rejuvenation, confusions, spirits, hope, loves, angst, creation, relief, questions, came glorious absurd sonic beauty and laughter. I'm very proud of this week's mess(age).

Combining: Van Morrisson, Vangelis, Antonín Dvorák, Jim Steinman's bombastic Wagnerian 80's pop, Def Leppard, David Guetta & Sia, The Police, Ella Fitzgerald, Erasure, Escala, Matthew Mathis, Moby, Vincent Duseigne, Ogurusu Norihide, Fairuza Balk, Pink Floyd, Charlie Kaufman, Nicholas Cage, Claire Danes, Radiohead, Richard Stallman, Seconds, Lara Flynn Boyle, Twin Peaks, My So-Called Life, THX 1138, Donald Pleasence, WarGames, Matthew Broderick, Daniel J. Davis, Air Supply, Bonnie Tyler, Ingrid Bergman... and a lot more, in ways never previously imagined.

I didn't know Dvořák lived in NYC for 3 years and wrote this then.

Avatar 5:24pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I got lucky, walked into the Charlottesville station on late night and someone hadn't refiled Ogurusu Norihide CD. I popped it in during the show and live-looped it in the CD player, and have been in love ever since.
Avatar 5:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I hate that Meatloaf song but it's also exactly the same as the other Steinman hits. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 5:27pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm watching the video of me making this, making choices. I ought to video stream the screen some time.
Avatar 5:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Wagnerian, they say of him.
Avatar 5:30pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Dvořák may not be, but I find a pop-appeal heavy-handed through-line. Not that Dvořák isn't also beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Webhamster Henry:

Nice overload here, Kenzo.

It was probably luncheon meats because I usually can't read that phrase without laughing. So avoid fried luncheon meats if you have this disorder.
Avatar 5:41pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yup, it's official: Fried luncheon meats that cause disorders are funny.
Avatar 5:42pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh, gloomsday and Rich, why???? You have phones!!
Avatar 5:42pm Bliss:

I ate fried bologna sandwiches sometimes, as a child.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Rich in Washington:

@Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever): I am especially fond of that phone. It's one of those once ubiquitous tan 70s pushbutton phones, bought because it had a real bell mute function and a red call indicator light - perfect for a sound studio. It also has a taped on note on the handset that says 'One Minute Limit, Please'. We think it came from a school front office.
Avatar 5:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I literally don't now what a fried luncheon meat is, but I might still have the disorder.
Avatar 5:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Rich, That is a nice phone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Rich in Washington:

WHat if there were a phone call on this recording but the person on the other end was someone RIGHT NOW?
Avatar 5:45pm Bliss:

Ours was white bread, mayonnaise, and fried bologna.
Avatar 5:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Rich, sometimes I achieve that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm listener james from westwood:

It sounds like more of a state or county fair thing, fried luncheon meats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Rich in Washington:

I've HEARD of fried bologna, baloney, etc. It's really a thing, eh?
Avatar 5:46pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I once helped a friend recover a recording of his recently deceased dad who just recorded a new voicemail greeting a few days before he died. It was weird. I guess he could just listen to it over and over.
Avatar 6:23pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Love, mcat!
Avatar 6:24pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh yeah, should credit Angelo Bandalamenti
  6:24pm possibilitywaves:

catnip!! there are some similar ones called catmint. the smells of catmint are so very/lucking special! (jonny guitar strums)
  6:24pm Mcat:

Are you sure it wasn't a Beethoven? This was my favorite.
Avatar 6:24pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm watching the video of making this last night and it's dizzying
Avatar 6:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Ha, possibilitywaves, you're in a different listening timezone!

Walter Murch, eye-music.

My wife's grandmother was known for calling random relatives, give a long, rambling update and then suddenly hang up. I kept one of her more spirited voice mail recordings she left on our machine and shared it via Soundcloud to her family after she passed away.
Avatar 6:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The catnip moment is then or later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Rich in Washington:

Wait, Kenzo! There's video? Are we only hearing the show?
Avatar 6:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Rich, I haven't yet shared these videos!
Avatar 6:27pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

It's the making-of I make of every show because I'm not already doing 100 times more things live than possible

Avatar 6:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Can you believe nobody on WFMU has played these Def Leppard songs before?
  6:28pm possibilitywaves:

I was remembering that part! : ) :) this is a very unique show to recollect! strongly zen and a good deprogramming washbasin scrub for this time of seasons!
Avatar 6:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

My first ever concert assignment as a photojournalist was Def Leppard. Nobody else wanted to cover it. It was astounding and began a years' long obsession of photographing iconic rock bombasts
Avatar 6:30pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

possibilitywaves, scrub with correct herbs if you have the disorder
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

There should be a Program that explores the work of particular Producers. I'm into Music enuff to want more 'technical' exposition of it...
Say this for Leppard: If you think it's easy to bridge the worlds of Metal & ChartPop - then have a go...
Avatar 6:31pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

RevoRabbit, we don't need a program. We do it always. At least it's all I can ever do.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Rand al'Thor:

There are neither beginnings or endings....
Avatar 6:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@rr: Oh, Somewhere in Time is about how the characters are completely ruined by having loved and lost, just not in time sequence. The 1929 woman falls in love with the 1980 man for the brief moment he's back to see her
Avatar 6:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@rr: Have you seen the short film "12:01pm"? I don't want to spoil it, but it's the film that Groundhog Day ripped off (but turned into a happy story)
Avatar 6:47pm northguineahills:

by admitting that beginnings and endings exist it annuls the point... or does it?
