Listener comments!
9:01am : Good Morning Bob + fellow listeners. Sending healing energy and good vibrations to Doc Rock!9:01am : Good morning, Bob, and all you fellow Brainiacs.9:02am : Good morning Bob and all other Planeteers.9:02am : Good morning, all!9:02am : Still feeling the vibe after a great Shrunken Planet!9:02am : A foggy good morning to you all.9:02am : greetings from cloudy Tannersville Mr. BB!
look at the colors, man, oh wow...9:03am : Good morning.9:03am : Morning Bob.🥁 9:04am : Morning Bob and all.9:05am : good morning. i'm listening with headphones so i don't wake up the whole house. man, the stereo mix on some of these 60s records is bizarre. rhythm guitar panned hard right, vocals hard left.9:06am : This debut tune by Cream, I dig but it's always struck me as sorta weird. Hee, music is funny.9:06am : That huge sigh of relief! I feel free right withya BB!9:07am : Good morning Jeff, 1whoknewcthulhu, Andrew in Toronto, Joe M.,Deborah, Fuzzy, Listener Bop Monroe, Uncle Michael, TDK60, WilliamfromDumont.
YETI BOB, CalZone!9:07am : Morning everyone!9:08am : it's not like they were going for any sort of natural stereo image. i can see why some people prefer the mono versions9:08am : Wow, I love this cover! It’s better than the original! El Chicano!9:08am : m.facebook.com...9:09am : Mornin' bb & group! 8-)9:09am : I get that TDZ60, with the Doo Wop intro. Who was doin' that in 66/67??
Hey Melinda, Revolution Rabbit Nov63, thx for link.9:11am : Cream was lucky to have Jack Bruce as an unusual songwriter, singer.9:11am : i fifth or sixth the sentiment on el chicano. good morning.🥁 9:12am : Lotsa good tunes on the "See" album.9:12am : Hey SmokinJ, dale, Glad you guys dug El Chicano. I learned of it from Charlie Lewis eons ago.
Agree Wm.9:13am : In the ‘60s and ‘70s, I had a close family friend who worked for Atlantic Records. She must’ve given me two dozen picture sleeve copies of See. I guess it wasn’t a big seller for the company.9:15am : George Martin went back & Remixed the Stereo on 1965's Help! & RubberSoul. I kinda like hard separation but unnatural it is... 1960s Mono indeed often completely different mixes - & now prized. Check the Mono 'Ticket To Ride' - & the whole Mono Sgt. Pepper was punchier. Mono often makes it seem so - & less politely spread out...9:15am : Wow--that's pretty garage for The Rascals.🥁 9:17am : The early Rascals stuff in mono is the way to go.9:18am : Hey Jeff, got any extra copy for a DJ?
Rev. I love that early lop-sided stereo w/the vocals all on 1 channel, some Beatles, Byrds 5D is crazy like that!
1who-and a rare guitar "solo!"
Yeah Wm. Mono is cool for garage-y stuff, stereo for Psych. but hell, I love it all!9:19am : Good morning, Bob and brains.9:20am : Good morning all9:22am : Man, did I walk in at the right time - I needed a little Slam in my morning.9:22am : Bob, definitely! I gave away a bunch, but I’m pretty sure I have a few left. I think the flip side is Carry Me Home9:23am : Love the Camel9:24am : Morning adamdoesit, Rick from SC,
Jeff! Giddy up! (as Kramer would say)9:25am : isn't it THE sopwith camel?9:26am : Cream had to stumble their way a little into inventing Hard Rawk - like the yARdbiRdS & Jeff Beck wondering where they belonged in Pop.
Hendrix helped answer that question.
Jack Bruce oh hell yes.9:26am : remember when irwin did those airchecks of that guy.....that guy..(thinking)....any way there was a commercial for the sopwith camel in it.9:27am : Woow, me too! Dale, I almost always leave off the "The" also "Sopwith" Camel but I can't be bothered!🥁 9:28am : I thought that early Charlatans stuff had been lost.9:29am : savage resurrection makes toes tap.9:29am : Good morning Bob & everyone! Agreed Bob re mono/stereo, love it all. Sometimes the hard-panned stereo makes for an odd listening experience but isolating channels sure helped me to figure out harmonies and drum parts when I was a kid!9:30am : The Charlatans supposedly influenced a lot of other Bay area folks into dressing more outlandishly.9:31am : William right ?
Just saw this about pre-ballroom SF :
m.youtube.com...9:31am : morning9:32am : ...& check your speaker connections...9:33am : @dale wasn't that part of the Tom Wilson series?9:34am : Thanks for that link, Rev.9:37am : Yeah, That What's Shakin' various artists LP was fun. Check out Jack Bruce's very unusual bass guitar on "Crossroads" (w/Clapton & Powerhouse).9:37am : Cowabunga DJ Bob! anyone needing a burst of caffeinated Saturday morning happiness to be alive here ya go :) Thanks DJ and friends9:39am : G👀d 12/12/20 B°b Br^íⁿeⁿ.9:39am : yay! from the witchwood is a fave. the sheperds song a standout for me, with rick wakeman.9:40am : I misspoke. I have the picture sleeve 45 of Carry Me Back/Real Thing not See. Bob, you can have one of those.9:42am : Wm. it's been available on diff. labels.
Hey Jeff, I'll take it!
Yeah Charlatans were pioneers and pioneers are often the ones who get the arrows in the back...9:46am : It’s yours, Bob. I just went through my 45s. I’ve got a bunch of Atco/Atlantic/Cotillion singles that she used to give me for free (besides paying 75 cents for brand new albums). One of my biggest regrets in life - we had another close friend who was in the jukebox business. He invited me to go with him to all these bars in Bklyn and take whatever records I wanted. I didn’t go🥁 9:46am : Ah, mellotron in the morning.9:48am : Yeah, everything sounds better with a mellotron9:48am : arrows →→→ in da back !9:50am : Sandy D. on Saturday morning, just fine.9:51am : Good morning from Seattle! Nice way to wake up. Thanks for the tunes, Bob.
Time to get out of bed and stretch. Got a nice run planned this morning. Bonus, the run ends at a donut shop.9:52am : Hey Jeff, we all have regrets. People w/o 'em haven't lived!
Agree Joe M!
kpx, pioneers are ahead, so their backs are exposed.
The followers get the $. Sometimes it's deserved, other times...9:54am : CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!9:55am : I was late to the party, had Bursting at the seams and Hero and Heroin. They were special!9:55am : one tune after another fantastic and beautiful taking me to another world9:57am : Good morning Bob and listeners from Traverse City, MI! Nice to have this great Strawbs set on while the snow falls.9:57am : Hey egould310, Marc Francis,
Kevino, I was late too, came in on Witchwood & Grave New World, worked my way back.
theia, I'm glad you like!
Hey Corey, oh man, SNOW! I envy you, man.9:58am : Earlier Sandy Denny a delight - like her lungs grew bigger & her soul darker later... Charming ...yet the odd combination of Discovery & Obituary again... It's all an opportunity to practice one's Buddhism I suppose...🥁 9:59am : Nice set.10:06am : holy smokes now i know where Latryx got the sample. wow10:08am : @B°b: all to true in any field. the followers all to often don't even give credit. they just profit from the creativity of others, as you indicated.10:08am : Love Stanley Cowell. He used to be ubiquitous on the NYC jazz club scene. Then he disappeared. I was relieved to find out he’d been teaching all those years.10:10am : Rev, that is some deep stuff! "Discovery & Obituary." Wow.
Hey, thanks Wm. I was crushed when I read that Tony had passed.
Yeah, Strata East label heavily sampled. I guess that keeps it in the air but also drives up the vinyl prices! But...makes CDs viable to produce. again, Yin & Yang. Or "Ying & Yang, as Tony Soprano put it.10:12am : the latyrx song in question:
www.youtube.com...
great tune, killer sample10:13am : *re stanley cowell sample10:14am : Is there a compact disc revival yet? (Like they had a record revival.) Maybe it won't occur. MP3s/etc. forever?10:15am : that's Fuzz done right10:18am : @TDK,
I still buy them and I`m not an audiophile.10:18am : TDK60, I hope so. I gotta do something will all the discs I have in my collection.10:19am : Andrew, Irene, I still buy about one or two physical albums a year. A CD maybe or LP. Tapes, almost never.10:21am : "Friends would later note that Denny had a history of purposely throwing herself off bar stools and down flights of stairs in order to get a reaction. Several remembered this behaviour as "Sandy's party trick", while Dave Pegg's wife Chris stated, "She certainly did it in my house and it could be a very dramatic gesture, like self-harming. She could do it without hurting herself usually but I had a feeling there would be one time too many."
"Those who knew Denny said that her increasing level of alcohol abuse in the last years of her life led to an increasing number of falls (both accidental and on purpose), resulting in a growing number of injuries."10:22am : I borrow a lot of CDs from the public library.10:22am : upset when i read that. the music is all i care about.🥁 10:24am : Tim Hardin's backing band (sorta).10:24am : TDK I have wondered is there will be. All formats have had a revival, but...are physical formats a thing of the past for "the youths?"
I still buy cds and vinyl too, but in a fraction of the quantity I used to.
TDK, libraries rule, but the way people treat CDs drives me nuts!10:25am : Bop, what is that Sandy thing from?10:26am : got it from her wiki
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Denny10:26am : “Carry Me Back” is one of the best ever Rascals sides, methinks10:30am : The Rascals were great, Dennis D. // Don't think 78 RPMs or 16 RPM partee LPs are comin' back, but there's likely a 78 underground...hee..10:30am : i like CDs, 'cause i can listen to'm in the truck.10:32am : TDK: Cylinders baby, cylinders!10:32am : Reminds me of some speculating if Jim Morrison actually had some latent epilepsy he was sublimating or something throwing himself around - but probly no more than speculation. Although for Ian Curtis the line between seizure & performance was certainly blurred. Jim & Sandy may have shared a propensity for risk - but surely it had nothing to do with her onstage presentation...10:32am : my 97 gmc pickup has a factory cassette. ones i have from the 70s 80s still play okay.10:33am : Hee, L.B.P.10:34am : Agree about Carry Me Back @Dennis Diken. Late Rascals did some great stuff, especially the Peaceful World double LP.10:36am : Gotta give those later Rascals a retry. Sorta cut out when Eddie did. Columbia's are Jazzy and that wasn't Eddie's thing....but it's mine!10:36am : Like how one April Fools the Library of Congress (Smithsonian ??) issued a statement that due to how short lived digital platforms were - they were officially preserving all Recordings on stable 78 RPMs...10:37am : once saw a wire tape recorder in a (now closed Bklyn) thrift shop for $75 but it had no media & it was before eBay. still have regrets.10:38am : I have a few old classical 78s. I asked a used record dealer, who said nobody wants 'em.10:40am : Don't worry folks, I'd be adamantly opposed to any cassette-single revival.🥁 10:40am : Man, I really love Richie's albums from this period.10:40am : Bob, I’ll buy this tune for 300 million if you throw in the rest of your tunes10:42am : <3<3<310:42am : I saw the Rascals in ‘72 up in college. It was an expanded band, but I think only Felix and Dino were there from the original foursome.10:42am : Richie Havens was my first concert at 13 years old. Won tickets on the radio. The Rhode Island Auditorium. A hippie offered me pot. I declined. I was 13.10:42am : TDK60: I think the classical world fell hard for CDs. They don't appreciate the surface noise like I do. And they don't want to flip records in the middle of a symphony10:43am : wonderfful version10:43am : Richie Havens' version of 'Just Like a Woman' is every bit as good as the original10:43am : Got to see Richie at the Cafe Au Go Go during this debut album period. Left a strong impression tho it was long ago!10:43am : Originally CDs were going to be 60 minutes but Sony and Philips extended the capacity to 74 minutes to accommodate a complete performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony.10:44am : Wish I could've seen him then, @TDK6010:44am : Well worth it. Not quite Beatle money... Bringing It All Back Home my favorite Bob but maybe Blonde On Blonde. What can you say?🥁 10:44am : @TDK60 Wow!10:45am : then classical music listeners sold off their collections and secondhand classical vinyl became basically free. i picked up a bunch of Deutsche Gramophon disks in the 90s.10:46am : Actually it was almost overwhelming, his emotive presence, WilliamfromDumont.10:46am : Did Ritchie do for Woman what Jimi did for Watchtower ? Not quite but who cares...10:48am : Bob, you mentioned Tom Donahue and Bob Mitchell earlier, you might be interested in a thing I wrote up earlier this year where I talk about them: watchpocket.net...10:48am : ..especially when Richie sang "The Klan" or "Handsome Johnny."10:48am : @Revolution Rabbit Nov63 - almost, though Jimi totally reinvented All Along The Watchtower. Greatest cover ever!10:50am : Rusty, I'll check that out. Thx.
Man, comments are very cool this show, they always are, but i dig the threads, mon.10:52am : The Zombies Decca Stereo Anthology is a great compilation.10:52am : Damn. Another CHOOOOOOOOOON10:53am : Thanks for that, watchpocket! Will read later (try to squeeze it in!). I'm reading another book on the SF scene. // Bob! One of Procol Harum's most beautiful, have to turn it up.10:53am : good morning10:55am : Bonjour Phillippe Bastille,10:55am : Zackly Jeff.
I'll tell you... When I was a high school kid I'd done acid a few times & loved it. Then the school was showing the Woodstock film - & I thot I'd get blotto for it. Took some infamous 4-way that was going around. I had NO IDEA about that kinda dose yet ...& - in the high school was completely the wrong set & setting. Well - they had Ritchie Freaking Havens open Woodstock while they got the electrics together
...& WHOMP: Freedom! Freeeedommm! FREEEDOMMM !
...I completely melted in public right then & there. Big trauma... the big bad acid trip of my life, yerknow...
Four days later - John Lennon was shot.10:57am : @Bob @TDK60 My pleasure, gentlemen. Thanks for sounds Bob as always. Very unique musical vision on your shows.10:57am : Bob, the Salty Dog album and all of Procol Harum's output, for that matter, is so woefully overlooked and underappreciated. This one, a rare vocal by someone other than Gary Brooker, is a real gen.10:57am : Gracias DJ BB; see yall.10:58am : Thanks for another excellent show Bob.10:58am : great show Bob!10:59am : Thanks for the great show Bob! Nice to spend the morning with your song selections as usual. Take care all.10:59am : Thanks for the music, Bob and everyone for the conversation Take care, all10:59am : thnx again Mr. BB. till next week be safe all10:59am : NRBQ. another totally underappreciated band. And they're still playing!!10:59am : Wonderful Saturdays on FMU !
Thanks Always DJ BB.10:59am : I'm wondering if Pilgrim's Progress might be the first meta-sequel--a sequel about writing the original song.🥁 11:00am : Great show Bob11:00am : English is definitely weird.11:01am : Thanks Rusty, agree Gerry from Miami.
Yer welcome all & thanks!
Enjoy the weekend.11:01am : woohoo11:09am : Great show Bob11:11am : Another great show, Bob! Thank you.1:36pm : your not the only one I know Bob! welcome back to the air! still have those Strawbs cds you were kind enough to pass on - my favorite singing of hers on that album she did with them is ALL I NEED IS YOU. That couldve been a single, its as catchy as Si Tu Dois Partir (which she did w Fairport with Joe Boyd
