At the mercy of the local repair garage, because I know nothing about cars. One of the worst feelings in a capitalist economy is knowing you’re about to be taken advantage of. In order to sustain our voice when we sing, we need to ensure that our voice is well supported by our breath, and that our breath is not shaky or unsteady. If our breath is unsteady, the voice will definitely reflect this and our vocals will be shaky when we are sustaining or singing a long note or word.

	♥ 10:07am drowsy: I spoke to an Irish sheep farmer a year or so ago who told me the same thing - they basically raise sheep for the EU rewards (small like 12 Eurobucks or so), since their meat and wool do not return much money nowadays. Wool is the best, and sheeps, if used wisely, can maintain lands where vegetation needs control. (overgrazing is a thing too, and Ireland needs its natural forests back!) Anyways....

Overgrazing sheep in the heater hills is a big problem now and dairy is super profitable again??? One big change in Ireland in the 80s is that Dutch and Germans came to West Cork and Kerry and started making - and still do - amazing cheeses and that brought money back to dairy...

We took off last week for a few days in the car to Harpers Ferry. Was delighted to run into a recently retired couple at Jefferson Rock along the Appalachian Trail, of whom the wife was reading WEB DuBois bio on Brown and subsequently knew of his par excellence dealings with sheep. Additionally, Brown’s nursing skills for sick or injured lambs were legendary. His many sons and daughters recall how he’d stay up sometimes four nights restoring a baby sheep who seemed on death’s door to full health. Brown’s incredible skills and integrity also came to a head when he fell victim to monopoly capitalism. He’d formed a collective in which he’d personally supervise the collection of wool and bring it to market. Where a collusion between wealthy merchants successfully conspired to take him down. In sum, one of the greatest, selfless, Americans who sacrificed his life for the freeing of slaves, was also an expert on sheep and wool, and also crushed by the capitalists of his day. But his soul will never be crushed, and keeps marching on.

When I tell people about it I often use the context of a motorcycle journey I took from my parent’s house in FLA to NYC over the course of almost a week. Along the way I hit Savannah, Charleston, Asheville etc. But no place captivated in sheer natural beauty as the place for which will forever be linked with Brown. Definitely intend to go again! Through my obsessive reading about him I learned of a book that theorizes his place as a class conscience radical. Think it’s called “The Surveyor,” and is from 1960. Must get it soon. The DuBois book covers some of it too; as does the Boyer book, in which I recall a story in which Brown encourages squatters who built a cabin and plowed farmland were being forced out by land speculators who had bought up all these swaths of dirt and grass around Ohio. He was a badass radical in many ways. Weird how there’s still, in 2023, some really bizarre and angering Confederate apologist revisionism attempting to denigrate his legacy, even in the official park signs. Tempted to write these folks. Of course I refused to keep my mouth shut on the official talk.

The two things are completely antithetical, incompatible by their very nature. Same as Christianity and Capitalism. Utterly at odds. I would recommend the aforementioned books for a distinct look at this aspect. The “not good businessman” knock is used all over the South right along with “he was a bit crazy,” an utterance I heard on no less than three occasions by locals. Those theories are even found in the “official” park signage. The purpose for which is clearly to make the case that because he “consistently failed at business ventures” that lack of success fueled a hate-brained attempt to liberate slaves with munitions. I love and admire that you made those pilgrimages up to North Elba, comrade (I’ve only been once). Those books might give you a better perspective on this issue.

All would be indeed well, except for the looming demands of the state on this last day of the month. Have to get the car inspected. But it’s got the yellow warning light on, meaning it won’t pass. At the mercy of the local repair garage, because I know nothing about cars. One of the worst feelings in a capitalist economy is knowing you’re about to be taken advantage of. When I tell people about it I often use the context of a motorcycle journey I took from my parent’s house in FLA to NYC over the course of almost a week. Along the way I hit Savannah, Charleston, Asheville etc. But no place captivated in sheer natural beauty as the place for which will forever be linked with Brown. Definitely intend to go again! Through my obsessive reading about him I learned of a book that theorizes his place as a class conscience radical. Think it’s called “The Surveyor,” and is from 1960. Must get it soon. The DuBois book covers some of it too; as does the Boyer book, in which I recall a story in which Brown encourages squatters who built a cabin and plowed farmland were being forced out by land speculators who had bought up all these swaths of dirt and grass around Ohio. He was a badass radical in many ways. Weird how there’s still, in 2023, some really bizarre and angering Confederate apologist revisionism attempting to denigrate his legacy, even in the official park signs. Tempted to write these folks. Of course I refused to keep my mouth shut on the official talk.

The two things are completely antithetical, incompatible by their very nature. Same as Christianity and Capitalism. Utterly at odds. I would recommend the aforementioned books for a distinct look at this aspect. The “not good businessman” knock is used all over the South right along with “he was a bit crazy,” an utterance I heard on no less than three occasions by locals. Those theories are even found in the “official” park signage. The purpose for which is clearly to make the case that because he “consistently failed at business ventures” that lack of success fueled a hate-brained attempt to liberate slaves with munitions. I love and admire that you made those pilgrimages up to North Elba, comrade (I’ve only been once). Those books might give you a better perspective on this issue.
