Speaking of failures...as we had a Hot Water Failure in my building yesterday, I finally took a shower after a weekend of not bathing. MAN I never thought I would be so grateful for the simplicity of a hot shower, and Doc Bronner's Tea Tree Oil Soap cut 50/50 with water, and clean cotton T-shirts. sox, and granny undies.

And I LOVE pickled beets. My Mom, may she rest in peace, had a great version and when the jar got down to about halfway, she'd stick half a dozen peeled hard boiled eggs into the brine. Pickled beets and pickled beet eggs = an AMAZING sandwich. Can also dump more white sweet onions into the brine for a crazy 3-way sandwich fill.

Terence McKenna of course posited we took a dramatic turn as we left the forests & jungles - from a more natural & matriarchal orientation - to a more militant & patriarchal one : that what we reflexively consider 'normal' for Human Society is in fact significantly imbalances & pathological. On evidence of our trajectories - isn't this true ?? As for the longterm fate of the Human Species on this Earth ...even the humanistic & high-minded StarTrek narrative - for example - extrapolates more World War & Environmental Catastrophe in the centuries to come before Humanity once & for all resolves to do otherwise. & that's the *optimistic* view...

The idea that agriculture and cities led inevitably to violence and exploitation is really beautifully refuted in The Dawn of Everything, which finds that for the hundreds of thousands of years of our existence we have consistently experimented with political and social forms to see what would work and bring satisfaction. That in the forests and jungles there have been cruel societies, agricultural societies, urban societies, just as there have been outside the forests.

And, most crucially, that the last 500 years or so are an aberration -- an experiment that got out of hand and that, like so many other human endeavors, is contingent and *can be changed*.

Only since the Renaissance, then, in that conception ?
McKenna's speculation - let's call it - is a turn in Consciousness itself in our deeper History that was neither recorded - nor generally recognized much less acknowledged much less addressed.

...when asked about the Maya - McKenna *did* say - for all the NewAge embrace of them - they were pretty cruel, actually. Tho - in a very wide & long view - this might actually support these other ideas of his here.
& then - just now I am seeing some pushback on the characterization on Ancient Mesoamericans as a Human Sacrifice culture - & all this...

I am just saying the point in the book was that there have been forms of political and social experimentation going back as long as there have been humans, probably longer, and they are all contingent -- what we are dealing with now is in no way preordained, and we can change it if we try.
Avatar 3:55pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

↳ Handy Haversack @3:50

Is it contingent - or is it things in our nature ? & can we come to terms with that.

It does seem as if a long-dormant suicide bug has stirred to life .. hence entire societies galloping to a certain doom of unreason, being very defensive of their blindness... and others .. us enlightened folk sitting back observing, wondering what the hell ... are either uncorrupted, or a mutant subspecies that never got the bug somehow.

And that humankind of the near future will be two radically different biological tribes: the truth-wielders and the toxic-dreamers. I mean, why not: this march to bad craziness seems to have gone off like a lightswitch...

That's interesting. I hadn't heard that before. I always think of Statler and Waldorf on the Muppet Show and they would have been sitting in a box, not the bad seats.

yes there's footage of a 1970 concert where he's lifted up by crowd and someone hands him a jar of peanut butter, just a personal reading... interesting factoid!

Here's an explainer, and the newsprint illustration really drives home the point. I think there's a way to reframe it: patrons in the bad seats actually had a lot of say over what could happen on stage. And in my understanding they were often discerning and unforgiving critics. So embracing "peanut gallery" could be a way to reclaim that legacy. But I get the other point made here, that racist implications could be unwittingly transmitted too. I'm sure I got it from my dad who got it from Howdy Doody. theconversation.com...
