Listener comments!

  5:48am Tim:

thanks for taking me through the overnight from the archives
  10:50am Doug:

Tim,
The archives are a wonder. It is a brilliant way to check out missed shows or revisit great ones from the past. Have you used the Random Archive Generator? It's an amazing devise that spins the entire WFMU archive database like a roulette wheel and lands your ball on a different show each time. Everyone's a winner. Go here: http://wfmu.org/randomarchive.php

Happy spinning!
  1:20pm Kenzo:

And don't forget the Random Songs Generator, for when your attention span is shorter:

  11:16pm Doug:

And of course, the Random DJ Blather generator is a marvel to behold!
  10:51pm Diana:

Great show- Thanks. I played it saturday morning, pre-coffee. I floated through that Andrew Hill Trio track. Amazing.
  4:42pm Doug:

I'm flattered that you reached for this archive _before_ reaching for the coffee! Andrew Hill's "Black Fire" will always be special to me because it was the first AH record I ever bought. Such an ecstatic aha! moment when I got it home. And the ecstacy has never ended. About a month before he died, Hill perfomed a stunningly beautiful show at Trinity Church in lower Manhattan. You can see/hear it here: http://www.trinitywallstreet.org/calendar/index.php?event_id=39988
  1:15pm Hugo:

Yes, thanks for the Andrew Hill. By coincidence, I got the Marion Brown "Why Not" platter in the post last week. Man, is it a beauty (with Stanley Cowell, Norrie Sirone Jones and the mighty Rashied Ali)! But you knew that.
  1:32pm Doug:

Hugo,
The fact that the name Marion Brown isn't on the lips—and in the hearts—of every American makes me physically ill. What a supremely creative and vital artist. The quartet on the ESP lp "Why Not" is stunning. Nearly as crucial in the history of jazz labels as ESP is Strata-East, the musician-owned and operated label co-founded by Stanley Cowell. Quick. Name your favorite Strata-East album...
  2:33pm Hugo:

Well, of those I know about, Live at Slugs with Music Inc. which features Stanley Cowell, Charles Tolliver, Cecil McBee and Jimmy Hopps. But there are others in the stack which I've yet to listen to ...
  2:43pm Doug:

My favorite Strata-East release is probably Brother Ahh's* "Sound Awareness." One entire side of this record is a single, epic call-and-response chant/sermon led by Max Roach, who intones "Love, love, love" over a hundred-person vocal chorus. Monsterly! And guess what, dear listeners, I'll pull that sucker out and play it on my next show.

Are you ready? 'cause I hope you're ready, 'cause you'd better get ready.

*Also known as Robert Northern, who added some lovely french horn stylings to a number of Sun Ra sides.
  11:55pm Lena:

My former boss, an Aussie Chap, loved AH. Bought him a CD for Christmas present. In retrospect, I regret doing that now; he was such a son of mother and well, I should of kept that CD for my own collection. Wait, what was my point...oh, um. thanks for including Mr. Hill in this weeks playlist.
  2:32pm Doug:

Lena,
Buying a crappy boss an Andrew Hill CD is really above the call! Glad you enjoyed the music.
