Listener comments!

  9:08am Bad Ronald:

Morning - nice tunes!
  9:12am Paul Sherratt:

The which games ?
  9:13am gumby:

Welcome back Doug. I loved the Coltrane documentary premium. It is inspiring me to be a force for good. The best possible good I can be. My favorite part was "Coltrane was almost savage in attempting to play his horn as thoroughly as he could." I've never heard it put better.
  9:17am gumby:

honkin' & bar walkin' what a great way to start a Friday.
  9:27am gumby:

I think herons are territorial. That's probably why it was alone. Alone is not always lonely.
  9:34am GP:

Morning Doug and Bad Ronald and everyone else. Some nice stuff playing right now.
  9:42am Moses:

Peace my Brother ! Lets try and do lunch next week .
Love Mo'
  9:48am GP:

Doug,
Is that Machito track on vinyl ?
  9:52am gumby:

I think they should have drumming as an Olympic event.
  9:53am Doug:

GP,
I have this on a 4-CD collection from Proper (the hyper-cheap Brit reissue folks).
  9:56am GP:

Thanks Doug, I'll look for it.
  10:09am Paul Sherratt:

GP, Look quickly. I think they're discontinuing the April 2008 release already ..
  10:27am dc pat:

I've said it before, I'll say it again--go see the Ex, best live show you'll ever see and with all those Ethiopians, it's gotta be the event of the decade.
  10:28am Brian Sanders:

Why is Mulatu Astatke not appearing? Ethiopiques 4 is just sublime.
  10:33am Doug:

WFMU's music director, Brian Turner, deserves a monstrous heap of praise and appreciation for his hard work conceiving and pulling off all the amazing concerts in our Free Music Series this year. But the Ex/Getatchew Mekurya/Mahmoud Ahmed/Alemayu Eshete/Either-Orchestra/Extra Golden show is nothing less than one for the ages. Thank you Brian. Thank you, thank you, thank you...
  10:35am Ypsi Doug:

Man I wish I could come out for these shows. Ask Ken and Brian to do a series in Ann Arbor next! :)
  10:45am Harvey:

Yeah, come to Michigan!
  10:47am Matt:

I just realized that I'll be on a flight to Arkansas during the concert......oh man, that sucks.
  10:47am Duncan:

Who was on the John Gordon track?
  10:50am Parq:

Thanks for reminding me about the Lincoln Center show. I've been trying all week to remember what the notation "Ex L.C" on my calendar means.
  10:50am Doug:

Matt,
We will be broadcasting the Ex/Mekurya et al show live, so look for it in the archives!

Duncan,
Here's the lineup:
John Gordon ~ trombone
Charles Tolliver ~ trumpet
Roland Alexander ~ flute & saxes
Stanley Cowell ~ piano
Lisle Atkinson ~ bass
Andrew Cyrille ~ drums
  10:51am Duncan:

Ah the usual Strata East crowd!
  10:54am Duncan:

Tolliver and Cowell were in one of Max Roach's groups. there's a really nice track by that group called effie (I think) with gary Bartz.

This Joe McPhee is great !
  10:54am north guinea hills:

joe mcphee, a true gentleman and beautiful musican...
  11:28am gumby:

Whatever Guilherme was singing about, he was sincere about it.
  11:33am north guinea hills:

lived in fla for 20 years (moved there when i was 4), and have been to white springs many a times. sadly, never went to the music fest there.
  11:33am Parq:

(cornball alert) Gee, Doug, you coulda opened your show with this Jim & Jessie.
  11:34am ?:

Just thought I mention that the classic John Tchicai "Afrodisiaca" has been reissued as well as Barney Wilen's "Dear Prof. Leary" on Promising Records which has taken upon itself to recycle the old MPS catalogue.

http://www.promising-music.com/

Nice Tchicai tune there by the way. Still going strong ...
  11:36am Hugo:

me = ?
  11:45am GP:

Dang,
That Brett Ratliff tune scared me. Cold Icy Mountain is right
  11:48am spaced profit Doyon:

nugrape twins kill. thanks.
  11:49am GP:

You can still get NuGrape today. It is very sugary. I think they use sugar instead of corn syrup.
  11:51am Ypsi Doug:

Is this "shape singing" or is that something else?
  11:52am Paul Sherratt:

I have a copy of the magnificent " Cuba " by the Alabama Sacred Harp Singers. Rescued it from a DJ's reject pile ...
Also rescued .. the stunning S Whitt Denson's " New Morning Sung "

( Hugo will understand the significance of THAT )
  11:53am ?:

or " New Morning Sun "
