Listener comments!

  9:06am annie:

whew!
  9:19am annie:

am i the only player in the sandbox this morning? i get all the toys?
  9:20am Drummer Some:

We can share the little blue shovel and bucket.
  9:20am Parq:

I'm in. Loving this "Telefono", especially the tuba.
  9:21am annie:

doug, you have no idea how much i look forward to friday morning. thank you so much for your show!
  9:22am Luciano:

you're not alone, annie ;)
Cheers from across the pool, and hey... Parq, I was thinking the same, that tuba was great, indeed!
  9:25am Cecile:

Good morning!

I call that cool sand castle mold.
  9:26am Parq:

And "Don Tosti's Pachuco Boogie Boys" is a name I could reread all moning.
  9:31am north guinea hills:

That Pachuco Boogie comp is a great album. Nice doc on the pachuco boogie swing scene in SoCal in the 40's.
  9:45am PMD:

morning all! have missed being here...
annie, at least last night, it wsa not my turn in any active games.
  9:50am Stuart Troutman:

I'm not sure I've ever heard of an old-time band called the Carolina Tar Heels, even though I'm an alum of UNC (as in Tar Heels). Were they from the Chapel Hill area?
  9:53am north guinea hills:

The Carolina Tar Heels (including Dock Walsh) were from Wilkes County, NC, outside of Wilkesboro.
  9:54am north guinea hills:

(can't help it, I'm a cartographer)
  9:54am Stuart Troutman:

Oh yeah, weren't they part of R. Crumb's "Heroes" card series?
  9:55am Drummer Some:

@Stuart:
Here's a bio at All Music written by Eugene Chadbourne:

http://tinyurl.com/ylobqwf
  9:57am Stuart Troutman:

Thanks, Doug. (Chadbourne oughta know.)
  10:16am Hugo:

Fine specimens there of curry eastern (not to be confused with spaghetti western).
  10:25am annie:

i saw a canadian movie last night that used what many of the reviewers called "bollywood" tunes. in the beginning of the movie, the soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend had brought home a "bollywood" video and explained that the music hinted of sex.. the soundtrack for this film was great as well as the extremely subtle undercurrent in the movie.. "the republic of love".. see it..
  10:30am Parq:

Had to commute through the hillbilly set and most of the Bolly set, dang the luck. Speaking of hillbilly, did anyone else catch Spazz last night? Pure bliss (or pure torture, depending on you view of the subject).
  10:33am Cecile:

The movie sounds good.
The other thing :(
  10:36am Carmichael:

Well, it's finally Friday. And it's about f'ing time too, pardon my French.

I'll mellow out and listen to the Friday Dream Team ....
  10:37am ken:

oh, rex! rex! so frickin' underrated. his jazz memoir is the best ever. and his performance on the cbs sound of jazz show is, for me, the highlight -- even better than monk
  10:41am ken:

btw -- the 'golden boy' art blakey tribute at iridium is insane. from curtis fuller to mulgrew miller to everyone -- worth a look...http://iridiumjazzclub.com/talent.php?talent=564
  10:56am Hugo:

Subdued is the right word for it. Beautiful album, that one. Though not all of it is subdued.
  11:05am Jeff from St.Paul:

A trumpet that can fit in your pocket?!
  11:06am Carmichael:

Hi Doug, have you planned an American Folk set or British Country music set for today?
  11:06am annie:

quatre= [KATr]
  11:07am Hugo:

It seems that the latest version of the Art Ensemble of Chicago features Hugh Ragin on trumpet. Another good one.

Yep, I did contribute a bit to the Church Number Nine while it was going. The tune itself ought to be on the radio, methinks ...
  11:11am Cecile:

why did Church Number Nine stop?
  11:16am Cecile:

sounds like the Hole in the Wall is down from the Chicken Shack.
  11:18am Drummer Some:

@Cecile
The primary contributors behind Church Number Nine just lost the passion for it. (I think some of the typical sniping and bickering and lack of appreciation that permeates the blogosphere didn't help).

@Annie
Thanks for the pronunciation guide. I'd done so well faking the Mexican set earlier. Guess the Gods decided to knock me back down step. Ooh la la!
  11:19am annie:

those silly french and all those unnecessary consonants and vowels
  11:32am Ike:

Speaking of pronunciation, Thai words transliterated as "porn" usually come across sounding more like "pawn." To my ears, anyway. Also, Doug, your play on words made us think you were going to play some bawm-chicka-bawm music. ;)
  11:33am Hugo:

The first one in the set sounds like up-country Thai from Isan? Went up there once. Man, was it hot! But Singha beer was generally at hand ...
  11:36am Drummer Some:

@Ike
I think of it more as boomp-chicka-boomp, but the chicka is universal and absolute.
  11:37am jk:

great show today Doug, thanks for the lift
  11:38am Chris & Purada:

Doug, we're listening in Thailand now.
Very surprised to hear a Thai tripple shot!
Thanks.
  11:39am jk:

and I usually pronounce it as weoh-chicka-weoh
  11:40am Hugo:

"porn": think of "pon" as in "upon". The wovel is short, not long.
  11:41am Drummer Some:

@Chris & Purda
So glad you you're on board! More Thai tunes coming!
  11:42am maria:

my kitties are really wondering what's goiing on!
  11:45am annie:

i'm glad isa was outside, she would have paced the floor..
  11:48am Parq:

A very serious, strictly classical colleauge was working just outside my office there fore a couple of minutes. God knows what she's thinking. Oh well.
  11:48am Ike:

I was only in Isaan briefly and it rained a lot, but I heard some really amazing traditional music on the FM airwaves there. I wish I could've recorded it. Also ate some great seafood in Nong Khai next to the Mekong. Nice town.
  11:51am Hugo:

Nong Khai is a nice place. When I was there, there was no road connection to Laos. Now, there is a bridge, I believe, which makes it easy to get to Vientiane.
  11:53am jk:

monrakplengthai!
  11:53am Hugo:

Kat Man Du = capital of Nepal ???
  11:54am Ike:

Yep, I rode across the bridge in '07 and got a visa on arrival. Loved Laos, though not Vientiane. Vang Viang and Luang Prabang (and the long winding twisting road between them) are incredibly beautiful.
  11:55am Chris & Purada:

Buddha Bliss! Nice.
Definitely one of the top Thai hip hop artists.
  12:01pm north guinea hills:

When I first saw that the Caravan track was playing, i thought the Canterbury band had a guest Thai singer.
