One night, about 20 years ago, my girlfriend at the time and I saw a shooting star go all the way across the sky. It lasted about 30 seconds. Crazy. (In fact, we were sitting at Station Manager Ken's lake house at a WFMU outing in the woods.) Well I knew right then that I would marry that girlfriend. (Which I did.)

Never saw shooting stars when I was a kid, but many since, including great sparky numbers that broke up in the sky, and the INTENSE Leonid storm of '01, viewed from a ledge in the mountains. The shooting star of romance is a nice note.

Nice set there. Galera Tres is one of my favorite prison songs. Ismael Rivera's Las Tumbas is another though that one is more about being released. Oscar Hernandez was on piano in that Libre track. What a great lineup in that band.

The alternate stream is getting compressed when it goes through WFMU's broadcast apparatus. If you listen to the Give the Drummer Radio stream, you are hearing it before it undergoes that compression, thus the sound quality is a bit better. Or so I've been told.

He was a really serious student of the blues, and would dig up songs from 1920 Biograph musicals to bring to a new hippie audience via his role in SF's drag troupe the Cockettes. For all his glitz, he was seriously interested in how folk, gospel and pop songs became the blues. And the writing is amazing. I would like to transcribe page 38 for you, but i'll just type up the most salient bit in a moment.
