Welcome back to Friday morning Doug. Hope you had a great vacation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am Doug Schulkind:

Hey there LJFW! If I yell duck, get your mug in the mud, pronto.

I did indeed, Duke. But I am glad to be back in my natural habitat.
  8:56am kat330:

Yeah, like I thought I'd be one of the first to post, heh!
Welcome back in the saddle, Doug! Yeah, I see now that was already taken, but what the hey. Hi, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am Doug Schulkind:

It's a big-ass saddle, kat330. Hop aboard!

  9:08am listener james from westwood:

oh. gods, i remember that accidental olympics dove-incineration. '88 iirc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Our cats are thrilled to have us home. Well, except for Oreo, is seriously pissed that Lincoln is away at camp. You may hear some yowling in the background.
  9:11am kat330:

Yikes, I'd forgotten -- or never known -- about "La paloma en llamas"!

  9:15am kat330:

@Doug: I so fondly remember the equal parts ecstatic and scolding reception I'd get whenever arriving home to my cats. Whenever I go away now, I miss having that to look forward to.
  9:16am listener james from westwood:

Aurélie, welcome. and say hello to Saturday for me. I could really use that day right now!
  9:16am kat330:

Thanks in advance (I, um, think), Van!

The guitar seems to become lighter the further east you travel in Africa 'till you hit Zimbabwe & The Four Brothers. Then it just floats in the ether.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

A lovely observation, Brian. I have occasionally described the guitars of soukous as "shimmering."
  9:32am Brian in UK:

Looking forward to hear your pronounciation of this one, Doug.
  9:33am kat330:

What happens to love the other two days?
  9:34am trish:

Good to hear your show again, Doug.
Great listening, this.
Hope you enjoyed the coast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Doug Schulkind:

I endeavor to stick the landing with each pronunciation. Usually, I sprain my verbal ankle. Happy Olympics everyone. What was your favorite Olympic moment?

For me:

#1 Bob Beamon's long jump in Mexico City.
#2 Tommie Smith and John Carlos giving the Black Power salute on the medal stand.
  9:37am kat330:

Ali lighting the torch and the first Olga "10" stick in the mind. But I do love the track & field events that get less coverage: High jump, pole vault, long jump, etc.
  9:41am kat330:

Banned? They oughta kiss Victor where the sun *doesn't* shine!

  9:48am kat330:

Hasil's heading for a raspy voice....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

The worst of the storms happened before nightfall. Some heavy gusts and Biblical rain. Overnight was just the wet stuff.
  9:49am Holly in NC:

Hi Doug & all!
Doug DID you see any moose? I've been obsessively watching the Alaskan brown bear/salmon live cam:
http://explore.org/#!/live-cams/player/brown-bear-salmon-cam-brooks-falls
- completely addictive!

Re Olympics - my love for Dorothy Hamill caused me to ruin my hair, forever. And Eric Heiden was my first huge "non-threatening boy" crush.
  9:50am kat330:

The same timeline for us, so I guess sometimes our weather is simultaneous and takes no time to travel to you.
  9:50am Artie:

Welcome back Doug! Had really been missing the shows and our little communal gatherings. Can't listen live today, but will check it out after the fact. Cheers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

Oh hey Holly! Not one dammed moose. I'm beginning to think it's all a hoax.

Greetings Artie! Happy archiving.
  9:52am kat330:

@Holly: Guess reminiscing on winter Olympics in this weather is a sweet relief.

  10:39am Carmichael:

Hi Doug, hey everyone. It's my turn: leaving for lovely Lake Tahoe tomorrow for a few weeks of quiet bliss. I'll get there faster than Bo can shoot that Gretsch!
  10:40am kat330:

Ooooh, Carmichael!! I'm so envious! Loved my time at that cool, deep, beautiful drink of water.
  10:41am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Carm! Hope you have a great time there!
Plan on checkin' in @WFMU?
  10:42am kat330:

[and IN it, too]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

I've been to Lake Tahoe once. The Nevada side, however. It's a long story. Saw a guy in the cafeteria of one of the casinos at 3am who looked a helluva lot like Garrison Keillor. It may not have been him, but I've always said it was. When I tell the story, that is.
  10:45am kat330:

@Doug: Long story? Didn't kill a guy in Reno just to watch him die I hope. We did drive a bit on the Nevada side, but our tent was pitched on the CA side. Gambling holds no intrigue for me whatsoever.
  10:46am Brian in UK:

Thanks Hugo.
  10:48am northguineahills:

I was cat sitting last for a neighbor, and I've come to the conclusion that cats really just don't like Edgar Varese.
  10:48am Van in DC:

Loved that trombone in Maine!
  10:48am Matt from Springfield:

Hey Brian--saw your observation earlier about guitar in Africa becoming lighter, the further east you go. Did you mean acoustic guitaring? Zambia rock has some pretty heavy electric guitaring, that's one of the first types of African rock I heard on WFMU.
  10:49am Matt from Springfield:

@Van: Seems awfully far to travel just to purchase a trombone, don't you think? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

I had no interest in the gambling. It was an "anthropological" visit. A friend at the time sold subscriptions to the Oakland (Ca.) Tribune. When his unit sold the most in a particular quarter, he was awarded an all-expenses paid weekend to Lake Tahoe. I was visiting then and he took me along.

@NGH
But the cat adored Varese and now you are marked for a slow and painful death. I wouldn't sleep if I were you.

@Brian in UK
Yes yes yes — all praises to Brother Hugo.
  10:51am kat330:

@NGH: An owner who gets a sitter for the cat(s) just for a night? That's one dedicated and protective owner.
  10:52am Van in DC:

OLYMPICS UPDATE
That legally blind archery dude just broke the world record. That is impressive.
  10:55am northguineahills:

It's for 2.5 days before one of their brothers come in. I drop the cat back next door before I sleep b/c that's where the litter box is located.
  10:57am Van in DC:

Wow, regarding archery dude
  10:57am Carmichael:

@Matt: I'm not sure if I will be able to check in. If I'm not doing anything and can nick the computer from the kiddos for a few minutes, sure. And I don't have a smart phone, just the kind that connects to Sarah at the Mayberry switch, and she patches me through to my party. And listens in.
  10:57am kat330:

A good idea in that case. But the cat might be more freaked by being in a different space than the music. IIRC, cats are more attached to places than, say, dogs.
  10:59am Matt from Springfield:

Nice! Im Dong Hyun must have great balance and hearing to tell where his arrows are going, and to keep shooting in that direction!
  11:01am Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Oh well, enjoy your vacation, and check in on a playlist if you ever miss the experience!

Can the old Mayberry switchboard receive and transmit GTDR? I'm sure the operators would love to listen in on that.
  11:02am northguineahills:

Nah, the cat was fine until I fired up the ol' gramophone. And he was fine when I was playing Indonesian light rock.
  11:03am Van in DC:

Tony Levin?? LOVE that guy! Did AWESOME work with Peter Gabriel if I remember right!
  11:05am listener james from westwood:

envying carmichael's tahoe trip. lots of beautiful country around that area. enjoy it!
i've only ever been to las vegas in nevada. but i have made it out to red rocks at the western edge of the city. stunning landscape and you'd never imagine sin city's just a few miles away.
  11:05am Aurélie:

yeah u did it :)
  11:05am Brian in UK:

Fair comment Matt about Zambia just throwing the thought out there.

Did Lord Buckley drop acid at Lake Tahoe or was it Lake Arrowhead? They say he rapped for twenty four hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

You are ON IT, Van!
  11:07am Brian in UK:

ngh gramophone. Love it. soon be time for luncheon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK:

According to some old friends of his, Lord Buckley's most extraordinary performance may have occurred during a Thanksgiving weekend retreat in the late 1950s at Dr. Janiger's Lake Arrowhead vacation cabin. The result of that performance - Buckley is said to have delivered a non-stop monologue that lasted more than 18 hours - is one of this storys more mysterious elements. "I have never seen a creative process as remarkable as that thing that happened," Janiger said of Buckley's soliloquy. 'I've never seen a human being continuously expound on a variety of subjects in such a refreshing, interesting way over such a long period of time without ever repeating himself. It was a virtuoso performance."
  11:08am kat330:

Actually time for a spot of tea for you.
  11:08am Carmichael:

@james: I'll technically be staying on the California side, but it's less than a mile to the State line. I'll play a little 21, but I'm not much of a gambler. I'll swim in that ice-cold lake and my voice will rise an octave or 2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

OLYMPICS OPENING CEREMONIES SPOILER ALERT...
At some point during the proceedings, Paul McCartney is going to lead the crowd in a massive, communal singing of "Hey Jude."

Not my idea of a good time, but then again, I don't have a TV.
  11:10am Matt from Springfield:

All right ""Jagadanandakaraka"! It's a magical word, whenever you manage to say it correctly, the song will start playing wherever you are!
  11:11am Brian in UK:

Doug, Oh to have been there. I think!!

kat tea pot at the ready, homemade scones made with buttermilk & homemade apricot conserve. (jam with bits in it).
  11:13am Brian in UK:

McCartney is singing na na na nanana in 264 languages.
  11:13am still b/p:

It would be a better time if they miked hundreds of individual people in the stadium, and kept switching to different ones or a few at a time in turn to be the load vocalists.
  11:14am Matt from Springfield:

@Brian: What's also impressive is that someone apparently listened to all 18 hours of Lord Buckley and confirmed that he didn't repeat himself!
  11:15am david:

now i'm def getting halal food for lunch.
  11:16am trish:

I'm thinking 'pear preserve with ginger bits'. Good by the spoonful.

@trish
Is there a better two-word phrase in the English language than "ginger bits"?
  11:26am Mary Ann Kennedy:

Greetings from Womad ... Perfect place to be listening in!

@Brian: Thanks for that link. I'm in the habit of listening to BBC 5 Fridays (9-11 am here) for Kermode & Mayo. It's always a struggle between GTDS and the MaKer guys. But now they're off for a few weeks, so I can be of one mind. :)

  11:43am Carmichael:

@Brian: yes he is, his 1st vacation. Should be lots of other dogs for him to bristle at.

@Carmichael: I got to see Albert King in a really intimate blues club in Chicago. A very memorable, full-moon night it was, too, driving home along the lake.

  11:45am Matt from Springfield:

@Aurélie: Still going strong into the early morning hours!
(I actually know where New Caledonia is! How's the weather there right now?)
  11:46am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: ALL CAPS comments ALERTS are much better however, than interrupting the programming!

With the zooming I must do in order to see the typing field, I can easily avoid your spoiler, Doug.
  11:49am Brian in UK:

I would love to see the Brownlee brothers come 1st & 2nd in the Triathlon. Alistair got his uni Blue at the same time as my daughter got hers.
  11:50am Van in DC:

So was any of today's program content courtesy of your recent WFMU mothership visit Doug? I think Amanda mentioned you were busily loading up at one point :)
  11:52am Aurélie:

@Matt from Springfield attend je regarde dehors.. well it's warm outside, I can see the stars & a little wind shakes the palms :)
  11:53am Carmichael:

Boy, does he sound like Hendrix!
  11:53am Brian in UK:

@Brian
Yes, but I pulled an ear-lobe muscle on that last track. I should have stretched more.

New Caledonia has one of the most awesome flags in the world. (Why yes, I am a geographer).

@Van
I love how closely you listen! I was indeed snarfing up CDs from WFMU's "new bin" during my visit. But no, none of those gems made it onto today's playlist. Soon come!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

Re: my comment above on Fri. 7/27/12 9:37am: Must apologize for my Olympics inaccuracy there! Why I thought Olga garnered a "10" before Nadia, I dunno. Chalk it up to a parallel universe of True Expectations. She SHOULD have been awarded a 10 (or two).
  7:44am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
You're right. Olga *should* have gotten a 10 for that back flip and catch off the top of the uneven bars. Did you know they Olympics have now banned that move?
