  8:51am Brian in UK:

I cannot believe what I am inhaling. Sweet essence of giraffe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am Doug Schulkind:

Let's hope the hyenas are not inhaling sweet essence of Brian in UK.
  8:53am Van in DC:

LOL @ the picture. Good morning Mr. Drummer and all 404 seekers out there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55am Doug Schulkind:

Never find yourself driving the wrong way down Highway 404. (That's nine miles of bad road.)

Good morning, Van!
  8:57am duke:

Good morning
I think I found your file. It was in the laundry.
  8:59am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am Doug Schulkind:

Lodged in the lint-catcher, no doubt.
  9:00am Jeff G:

Is this where the line begins?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am Doug Schulkind:

This is where the line dancing begins. Get ready to doe-see-doe.
  9:02am Van in DC:

Can't...quite...make...out...the...t-shirt. "Outer Banks"? nah...anyone? :)
  9:03am Jeff G:

Fetching t-shirt details....
  9:03am Brian in UK:

Hyenas, you are having a laugh.
  9:04am Alex in Illinois:

Good morning! And to Brian and anyone else East of the Atlantic, good afternoon and good evening. I actually go to work early enough to hear the show start!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Doug Schulkind:

Hope you get to go home early, then, Alex.
  9:05am Alex in Illinois:

I mean I actually "got" to work early enough. I really need to take advantage of the review page when posting.
  9:06am Brian in UK:

'10 Miles to Go on a 9 Mile Road' as Jim White once wrote
  9:07am Brian in UK:

Tip of the proverbial hat to you, Alex.
  9:08am Jeff G:

You said "duties."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, duties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Alex, typos only reveal that you are not some listener-bot come to destroy us all.
  9:10am Brian in UK:

I read that as 'Feltching track details'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Today's playlist photo comes to us from Listener Ron, taken at the height of the "WFMU asunder" period.
  9:18am Paul Sherratt:

Blimey, that didn't sound like Nathan Abshire ! Frog in throat day ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

Frogs gotta live, too, Brother Paul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

Hey, Paul, get your D.L. Menard stories ready...
  9:24am Paul Sherratt:

That certainly does sound like D L Menard. Accidental fire-raiser ...
  9:27am Fiveash:

The Cajun Hank Williams!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

Ol' Hank couldn't make a rocking chair like D.L.
  9:28am Lore:

I often steal DL's joke, from ~1:03, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsdNOg79r8g
  9:28am Paul Sherratt:

And Doug, how did you know that I was talking about DL just a couple of hours back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Jeff G:

Are you going to get through this set without playing anything from the Jay Miller sessions? You, sir, plow the musical depths.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Before Jay Miller there was Leo Soileau!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Doug Schulkind:

Because of that transponder we implanted in your back molar, Brother Paul...
  9:32am Artie:

Hey, nice pic! Who's the handsome gentleman reflected there on the radio? So glad that what once was lost is found again.
  9:36am ndbob:

nice set there Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings Reverend Lore! Salutations Deacon Artie! Peace be unto you, Father ndbob!
  9:45am Paul Sherratt:

Lore,
The old ones are the best ... were you at that house party ?
  9:46am Uncle Michael:

G'morning drummers.
  9:48am Hugo:

@Brian: Sweet essence of giraffe ... Canyons of Your Mind?
  9:49am Uncle Michael:

Hugo got it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Uncle Michael! Howdy Hugo!
  9:50am Uncle Michael:

Hi there, Doug. Working on the shopping list...picking up my bird today.
  9:53am listener Rey:

Good Morning all Drummers and then some
Tuned in just in time for this Killer latin set.
  9:53am Paul Sherratt:

Uncle Michael, either there is some big celebration afoot or you've just arrived from 1960's Britain ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Jeff G:

Request: can anyone in this knowledgeable peanut gallery point me toward some good Bollywood-type Indian pop -- but w/o vocals?
  9:55am Uncle Michael:

(Next Thursday is Thanksgiving) I'm also making Picante de Camarones tomorrow...in case I can get a little inspiration from Doug and he'll play us some chicha...
  9:58am Paul Sherratt:

Uncle, that bird, it's not a blackbird is it ? ( talking of chicha )
  9:58am Uncle Michael:

I need to go beat the Twinkie rush and hoard! R.I.P. Hostess.
  9:59am holland oats:

drumma! peoples!
  9:59am ndbob:

As much as I love junk food, I never cared for Twinkies
  10:00am Uncle Michael:

No, I'm going way outside of the box and roasting a turkey. What's the blackbird/chicha connection?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Visitors to Earth from distant galaxies will be discovering perfectly "fresh" Twinkies millennia into the future.
  10:00am listener Rey:

all of the Tito Allen albums on Alegre are very good. Louie Ramirez produces and plays on them. Usually with the very inventive Papo Pepin on conga
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

Right you are, Rey. (Hey Rey!) And Mike Collazo on timbales and José Madera on bongo. And FOUR trumpets!
  10:04am Uncle Michael:

The death of Hostess also means no more Suzy Q's, Snowballs, Hostess Donuts, Fruit Pies - and since Hostess also distributes Drake's Cakes these days, goodbye Ring Dings, Yodels, Coffee Cakes...plus no more Wonder Bread, Beefsteak Rye, Dolly Madison, Home Pride, Nissen...
  10:05am Paul Sherratt:

Uncle.
Los Mirlos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Jeff G:

Wooo! Name check!
  10:08am Uncle Michael:

Thanks Paul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Jeff G:

Also saying goodbye with Hostess demise: 19,000 jobs.
  10:11am Van in DC:

The workers union did that.
  10:12am Fiveash:

Jeff G- I was away from the speakers, so apologies if Doug beat me to it, but this one is great: http://www.sublimefrequencies.com/item.asp?Item_id=46&t=Bollywood-Steel-Guitar
  10:12am Uncle Michael:

Hopefully some of the jobs will be saved with some of the brands, bought up in the bankruptcy sale.
  10:12am Lore:

Hi Paul. Regrettably I was not at that party with DL, nor have I ever seen him in person. Someday, I hope. (fiveash...?)
  10:16am holland oats:

$2.5B in sales and they couldn't keep it together? I smell a rat.
  10:17am Fiveash:

Lore- Yeah, I saw him at the Ponderosa Stomp a couple years ago, on the small stage on the back patio of the house of blues, backed by the Lost Bayou Ramblers (great and very young band from- I think- Lafayette or thereabouts). It was one of the highlights of a stomp filled with 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

Paul Sherratt has set awhile with D.L. Menard. Tell us a story, Paul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

And HELLO Holland Oats...
  10:21am dcp@:

hey kids. This B. Bradford is just...about...right...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

Van, when I eat completely synthetic sponge-cake-like treats, they HAVE to be union made.
  10:22am holland oats:

;)
  10:22am jill:

Hello all - Power back on in Jerseyland makes me enjoy Drummer Some radio that much more!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Jeff G:

Thanks, Doug and Fiveash!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

Hey dcp@, where y'@!

FInally back on the grid, Jill. That's some crazy-ass shit! Leave all your lights on for a week or something.
  10:24am 10 yr old me:

"But mom! The ad cartoon characters tell me it's ..."

Swindled before educated.
  10:27am Hugo:

Yes, the WFMU record fair is a wonderful thing. For those who have not been there, you can catch the atmosphere of the place on this eight-minute walk-through:

https://vimeo.com/53550703

Some WFMU djs right at the end of the walk-through.

Lovely BB record, by the way.
  10:28am dcp@:

I R @ kitchen...workin...listenin'
  10:29am Uncle Michael:

I want to tip you that I saw the Branford Marsalis Quartet last Friday and if you get a chance to hear Justin Faulkner play the drums...do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome to you, 10 yr old me! Wake up your little sister and have her listen, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

Marvin Peterson here is famously nicknamed "Hannibal." Some other nicknames among his bandmates here:

"Gov," "Spare Time," and "Wild Child."
  10:36am Van in DC:

Me really likey this
  10:36am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Doug! Glad to be listening in on a Friday morning again!
For the last week I had to wait for someone to leave to listen in the afternoon to WFMU--long story with this computer!
  10:37am Paul Sherratt:

Lore, various odd elements came together so that DL and the late great Eddie LeJeune toured the UK some 25 or so years ago. He stayed with us for a couple of the dates. He's a very fine human being.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

PLEDGE ALERT...PLEDGE ALERT...
Listener Rey has made hay and dropped some dineros. Thank you SO much Rey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

Glad you finally kicked them out, Matt in Springfield!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

We are $85 away from 50%. Yow. Za.
  10:40am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug :) Yeah, my computer wasn't fixed, I just kicked people out early for this!
Actually it's half-empty in here now, I wouldn't have a problem finding an open computer anyway.
  10:42am Matt from Springfield:

Give some to THIS drummer!!
  10:42am Matt from Springfield:

And while we're at it, give some to DOUG, the Drummer bringing this to you! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

Drummer here is Jimmy Cobb. Played most famously with Miles.
  10:44am Matt from Springfield:

Jimmy Cobb Salad, makes for a wonderful jazz lunch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Jeff G:

I tend to prefer the basic Grant Green Salad.
  10:51am jill:

with a little Art Pepper sprinkled on top
  10:52am Fiveash:

Served with braised Bud Shank
  10:53am Uncle Michael:

As long as they never run out of chops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

It always winds up with food and drink on this comments board.
  10:54am Fiveash:

And a big pot of Gerry Mulli... aw, forget it.
  10:55am Matt from Springfield:

Good dishes, everyone!
  10:55am ED:

WHY NO FLASH STREAM?
  10:56am Matt from Springfield:

Smokey...and Sister! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

I actually had some Wallace "Cheese" Reed ready to go in that cajun set.
  10:57am holland oats:

L&N ACK I LOVE THIS!!!
  10:57am Uncle Michael:

Circuit of the Americas looks amazing.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

@Ed
Flash streams for Give the Drummer Radio and the other alt streams at WFMU are in the works.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

Jerry's Records is about 150 seconds away from my house.
  10:59am Matt from Springfield:

Alternately, Larry & Vicki -- that would sound good if they were British.

I played this lost duo to my parents, who took great interest in them. My Dad thought the voices sounded familiar, then compared them to "the lost Davy Jones/Cher duets". I hear bits of them in their voices.
  10:59am jill:

ndbob - thanks for that article.
  11:01am Hugo:

How about a show from Jerry's Records, with nothing but records sold at the store?
  11:01am Matt from Springfield:

That's GREAT to know, Doug!
Once WFMU gets back up on her feet, I'm glad there are plans to keep on soaring ever higher!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Jeff G:

Just: Don Cherry.
  11:05am Matt from Springfield:

Oooh, this is great, sounds like early Todd Rundgren.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
You saying I should've popped some Cherry in that last set?
  11:07am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Well, it would have been the cherry on top of the last set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Doug Schulkind:

@Matt in Springfield
A much nicer image. Thanks for classing up the joint.
  11:09am vintage ads:

"Cherry Pop, Cherry Pop,

  11:11am Andrew in Toronto:

Poor, sad Peter Laughner! I always feel a bit weepy when I hear his voice. It is the same thing I feel when I hear an Arthur Russell song. Anyone else feel that way? Thanks for playing him. As alway, I love your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Jeff G:

Just keeping the food thing going...?

Lurv this Peter Laughner LP. Sad, for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

Lotta dead-too-young men in this set.
  11:13am Matt from Springfield:

**takes cigarette out of gold plated cigarette case, places in gold cig holder**

EXCELLENT Peter Laughner--where's a good place to begin with his music?
  11:14am Jessie:

Engine Driver! What a good choice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Agree with everything you said, Andrew in Toronto.
  11:15am Uncle Michael:

I'm late to the Decemberists party. My Viva Radio show this week was all murder songs and I included The Rake's Song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Agree with everything you said, Jessie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Jeff G:

@Matt: the comp Doug played is all the Laughner you'll need -- possibly all the Laughner there is?
  11:17am Matt from Springfield:

Yeah! And one of my all-time fave beds too, Oliver Sain!
  11:18am Van in DC:

Oooooh. Love this Oliver Sain bed music
  11:18am Matt from Springfield:

"Take the Guitar Player for a Ride"...thanks muchly Jeff! I'll check that out.
  11:19am Paul Sherratt:

Decemberists now hooked up with Tucker Martine, isn't that so ?
  11:21am ndbob:

I remember seeing Smokey and his Sister singing "Creators of Rain" on Baltimore TV
  11:21am Paul Sherratt:

The name Tucker Martine just shook hands with itself, mid Atlantic ..

  11:26am Rates beyond banker walls:

The brief path from 0-70% of the WFMU overall shows decent progress, no?
  11:27am Paul Sherratt:

Talking of the 40,000 tracks does anyone know ANYTHING about item ' 03 Same Age Boys ' Internet searches has certain drawbacks ... they must be from Zimbabwe I suppose.
  11:29am Uncle Michael:

Doug has the cabana key.
  11:31am Matt from Springfield:

Friends supporting each other -- a friend in need, is a friend in deed!
  11:31am Matt from Springfield:

Wow, thanks Van! :)
  11:32am Matt from Springfield:

Will DL that when I get home.
  11:32am Uncle Michael:

Are Friends eclectic?
  11:33am Hugo:

Thinking of "sad boys" and "pain", can't help thinking of Kevin Coyne. Some very dark sentiments in there, right from the debut Case History.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

@Rates beyond banker walls
WFMU getting to 70% is just brilliant. The committment and loyalty of the WFMU community is gobsmacking.
  11:36am Uncle Michael:

Where is Now from? I'm wild-ass-guessing Oakland, CA.
  11:38am Paul Sherratt:

Uncle,
Friends are ' Eclectic '
Eclectic, the most abused word in the BBC dictionary.
Hugo,
Never got to see the wonderful Kevin Coyne. And recently we lost Michael Marra. Same applied there too.
  11:38am Matt from Springfield:

@UM: WFMU friends certainly are eclectic, if that's what you mean!
  11:40am Matt from Springfield:

@Paul: To cut back on "eclectic", instead spell out what it means to you. I would replace eclectic with "diverse beyond description".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

On the other side of this 5th Dimension cover of Traffic is a cover of a Bacharach/David track.
  11:40am Matt from Springfield:

Whoa! Didn't realize Marilyn and Billy and the 5th Dimension covered this Dave Mason/Traffic number!
  11:44am Rates beyond banker walls:

Yeah, so maybe you reach wfmu()normal before Dec 5?

Commercial radio continues to drift into the further reaches awful.
  11:45am Matt from Springfield:

No rib jokes, people... ;)
  11:48am Uncle Michael:

I'm totally stealing that 5th Dimension track for a Thursday night.
  11:49am Uncle Michael:

And where's the Gary Numan pun love?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

Mitt is laughing at our 47%. A donation of $85 will kick us 49¢ past 50%.
  11:49am Paul Sherratt:

Matt
I'll go with" diverse beyond description and forever curious "
BBC management think it's when a show plays more than two styles in a 12 month period.
  11:50am Hugo:

@Paul: I recently came across an opera for Syd (Barrett) that Kevin Coyne performed with others in Leipzig in 1999. Totally unknown to me.
  11:51am Uncle Michael:

The radio concept of the "train wreck" is a myth. Smooth segues are beautiful. So are startling transitions.
  11:51am Paul Sherratt:

Hugo,

Gosh .... did I ever get you a copy of the album Kevin made with Brendan Croker ?
  11:52am Alex in Illinois:

@Uncle, I noticed it! THe play-on of "Are Friends Electric"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu6MDdxBork
  11:54am Uncle Michael:

Thanks Alex. I thought maybe my mic was off.
  11:54am Matt from Springfield:

King of Soul gets ballad-y!

@Paul: Wonderful definition! Your eclectic is more precious than the BBC's anyday!
  11:55am Hugo:

@Paul: There are exceptions. Those "On the wire" chaps keep going still. Yes, I did get the Coyne-Croker one. Very much appreciated! That one was never really released, was it?
  11:55am ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
  11:55am Van in DC:

Wow! This show went too fast! Thank you so much Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

Thank you ndbob and Van in DC and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Jeff G:

So fast -- wonderful wannaful.
  11:57am monica:

another stellar show, doug!
  11:57am Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the great morning, Doug.
  11:57am Matt from Springfield:

Always over too fast, but what a ride it is!
Thanks Doug, an amazing and lively show today!

Have a good day and good weekend, Drummers!
  11:58am Set that got cut:

We can't wait until next Friday!
  11:58am Uncle Michael:

Cold turkey...next Friday.
  11:59am Alex in Illinois:

From something I heard on the radio about James Brown, he actualy preferred ballads, but the energetic groove stuff that he did so well drew the crowds
  12:01pm Matt from Springfield:

Cool to know, Alex.
  12:06pm Paul Sherratt:

Hugo,
I suppose there are quite a few exceptions but management's definition is set at the lowest bar to match their imagination.

No, I don't think that Coyne-Croker was released. But I could be wrong.
  2:49pm Van in DC:

I usually am. (wrong)
