Speaking of unorthodox Jewish religious headware, I have an "X" yarmulke. It was created and presented (and sold) at an installation Soho gallery (the Paula Cooper Gallery, I believe) back when Spike Lee's Malcolm X film was showing and everyone under the age of 23 was wearing "X" baseball caps. It was also a time of tension in NYC between the African American and Jewish communities after a number of high-profile incidences of violence.

My favorite advert blurb from back then:

"You've read the hat, now see the movie."

A yarmulke-wearing fellow passed us and said, "It's a long way from Upsala College." Turns out he's a local rabbi and longtime JM in the AM listener.
