Doug, this is a weird question, perhaps, but I was wondering. Have you seen the clip that was making the rounds on the internetwebs recently, featuring a Thai band, with this amazing loopy electric guitar - the guy was playing through a delay pedal, obviously, being accompanied by percussionists.
Ring a bell?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Rich in Washington:

@Merv: Yes! That's them! Amazing!
The funny thing is, there's an incredible Thai restaurant in my town - really patronized more by our Thai community than anyone else. They often play a similar kind of music in the background. Just shimmering layers of guitar with delay.
It irritated the Missus that I fixate on music wherever I go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
Remember Bernie on "Room 222"? My afro was bigger.

@Gary
Really?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Uncle Michael:

I have a picture of Karen Valentine on the floor...between my feet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Gary:

Yes. Guru Dutt, Geeta's husband, was pretty much the greatest Bollywood director of the 50s-60s. And Pyaasa is his masterpiece. It's about a poet, so I'm admittedly predisposed to like it. But, still ... it's a heart-wrenching film.
Avatar 9:31am still b/p:

Doug, is that the max fullness and height in the maraca picture, or was there more more MORE?

@ UM -- And are you twanging?

i have yet to be in an indian restaurant in northern nj that plays bollywood cuts. mostly it's generic piano-driven indo-schmaltz. perhaps folks from the current generation see it as their parents' music? no idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

"Pyaasa (Hindi: प्यासा Pyāsā, meaning "Thirsty") is a 1957 Indian film produced by, directed by, and starring Guru Dutt. The film tells the story of struggling poet, trying to make his works known in post-independence India, and a prostitute with a heart of gold who eventually helps him get his poems published. The music was composed by S.D. Burman.
With the commercial success of thrillers like Baazi, Jaal, Aar Paar and C.I.D. as well as comedies like Mr. & Mrs. '55, Guru Dutt and his studio were financially secure and established. From 1957, he could now make movies he really wanted to make, including Pyaasa. In 2002, Pyaasa was ranked at #160 on the Sight & Sound critics' and directors' poll of all-time greatest films. In 2005, Pyaasa was rated as one of the 100 best films of all time by Time Magazine, which called it "the soulfully romantic of the lot." Indiatimes Movies ranks the movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. On the occasion of Valentine's Day 2011 Time magazine has declared it as one of the top 10 romantic movies of all time." This set is making me super happy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

Well then, Artie, my work is done. Please tell the barkeep to send down another mint julep.

@ davex -- Ozone alert and health advisory issued today for Maine.
Despite great natural attributes and many fantastic days of clear air, Maine is called "the tailpipe of the nation." Patterns bring pollutants, muggy air exacerbates. I do a fair amount of summer riding and wonder about the long term.

Doug -- you will have only clean air! Mebbe you can catch pitchers or musics or Shakespeares at the Stonington Opera House, unless you want to stick at the rental idyll full-time and say Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I need to get up there for the bikin'. Such a nice neighborhood.

Ozone is fuckfuttzling my stream and giving the Drummer some fat irksome gaps!!!

It's been a glorious week for crosstown rivalries.

63 and cloudy here
Avatar 11:37am Carmichael:

Are you talking about Steve Somers, the sportscaster??
  11:38am Elias:

Doug, have you tried picking up 660 AM over the terrestrial airwaves? It's a 50 kW station, and you ought to be able to pick it up at night in Pittsburgh with a decent AM radio. I listen to WTAM 1100 out of Cleveland all the time here in Queens. You have to wait until night, when the ionosphere becomes reflective to AM waves. AM radio is magic.
  11:38am Elias:

Yes! THE Steve Somers!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:39am Artie:

Bartender advises that today's special is a Kentucky Mule, a bourbon-based take on the Moscow Mule. I've taken a flyer and had three sent over to Studio P.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

Yes, Carmichael, THAT Steve Somers. On the back of my WFMU trading card where it lists my three radio heroes it names these three:

Bob Brainen
Steve Somers
Symphony Sid Torin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

@Elias
Yes, I have tried many times. Late at night I often listen through the static. I am not a fan of the FAN's newest late-night hosts. I listen online to the FAN a bunch, but usually just to hear Mike Francesa be his assholiest worst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Uncle Michael:

John Peel
Lee 'Baby' Simms
Big Bill Collins
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

Steve Somers has actually appeared on WFMU's Jewish music and information show JM in the AM. (That show only airs on the terrestrial broadcast, 6-9am. When it is on, WFMU has freeform programming online.) Many years ago, the host of the show, Nachum Segal, got Steve Somers to autograph and 8x10 glossy for me. It says,

"Doug — No, Eddie Murray!"

I treasure it.
Avatar 11:43am Carmichael:

Wow, he used to do the sports on the local news in Sacramento in the mid-70s. I heard he went to Atlanta, but lost track of him.

Here's a baseball note: it's been confirmed that a friend of mine will have his opera about Josh Gibson produced here next year in one of the city's higher profile venues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am KevinfromBayRidge:

Can I favorite this 100 times??!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

@Carmichael
Somers talks often about his roots on the West Coast. In Sacremento (he calls it "Sack of Tomatoes") and the Bay Area.
Avatar 11:45am ndbob:

wow - sounds great b/p!

No or you will break the Internet (or at least you will cause Kenzo to have a mild upset tummy).
Avatar 11:46am Carmichael:

What station is he on now, Doug? I'll have to internet-listen.
  11:46am Elias:

The Nachum Segal/Steve Somers/Doug Schulkind/Eddie Murray demolition derby collision has just COMPLETELY BLOWN MY MIND with awesomeness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
Speaking of Josh Gibson, I live about five minutes from the Homestead Grays Bridge, here in Pittsburgh.

Irma's a joy ... even on a winter's night in Colne, Lancashire
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Uncle Michael:

I highly recommend the Negro Leagues museum in the 18th & Vine district in Kansas City.
  11:49am Elias:

Carmichael, If I have had anything to do with your re-discovering Steve Somers I will consider my life duties to be complete. He's on WFAN, which is AM 660 here in New York. I suggest that you call him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

Steve Somers did the overnight shift on WFAN for years before moving to daytime (and now evenings). His late-night run on radio was the best radio ever. I was glued to it every night all night. Captain Midnight lives!
Avatar 11:52am still b/p:

The Irma track WAS great. I loved the "multi-vitamin...with iron..."

Doug -- the opera composer did some research/homework/legwork down thataway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Rich in Washington:

@uncle Michael: for some reason, your recommendation compelled me to look up Old Negro Space Program.

Avatar 11:54am Michael:

Somers is great. He's on evenings except for Met games - he ofter will follow the game and go to 1 or 2 AM. He also does a Saturday early evening shift, sometime around 4/5. He was in his glory last night after the Mets swept the Yanks.

Hell so was I.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am KevinfromBayRidge:

OK Doug I just Faved once...Great show, I'm so happy to be able to listen at work thanks to Pop-up. Sure wouldn't want to mess up Kenzo's day!
