Morning Doug and Dougsters.
You want curly fries with that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32am Doug Schulkind:

Did you ask Moe and Larry if they wanted Curly fries?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:57am listener james from westwood:

i was once the only curly man in a poker game of shemp fans. i felt discriminated against.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am Doug Schulkind:

How do you like it? Moe Moe Moe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00am Uncle Michael:

Nice gif. I had a cocker spaniel that could do that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00am Alex In Illinois:

I always preferred Curly over Shemp, but I did not think there was anything wrong with Shemp fans. They both worked well with that tall blond actress,

Good morning Ill Alex! And glad you're still here, still b/p.

aaah, these guys gave me gentle shit over my curly allegiance over the course of the game. i soaked it up and avenged my cue-ball idol by taking their money. (okay, all four bucks of it; it was literally a nickel-dime game)

good GOD. That gif is freakin me out. Looks like some kind of western PA industry...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey jk,
The mood here in Pizzaburgh is largely gratitude mixed with a tinge of disappointment. It will be interesting to see if the Steel City can handle the psychic shift of losing its doormat status, like Bostonians had to in 2005. That said, I'm hope the Dodgers squish the Cardinals into dust (and then lose to the Bosox.)

@dc pat
No, this a live shot of the U.S. House of Representatives Parliamentarian.

A different Sardinian team...but one of my favorite perfomance moments was seeing the Tenores di Bitti years ago singing a song like this while in a tight revolving huddle with their four heads touching together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings Jill!

@still b/p
Tenores di Bitti are amazing. Almost played them here instead. Then there's Tenores di Orosei. Too many cantu a tenore singers to choose from.
  9:17am Robert:

Joe Besser was funny in his own right, but not as a Stooge. Curly Joe was scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

What you been smokin', Alex? There are no "happy" country songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Why oh why is the 22-year-old Anita here singing like she's seven?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Alex In Illinois:

Hello Doug & all Drummersomes ( or some drummeralls?). Crazy at work today but I'm enjoying the show between cluster-Fs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

This tune from Thomas Mapfumo was serious business. He is mocking Ian Smith and the ruling white Rhodesian power struggle. Mapfumo would be jailed. The gov't would fly over the bush blaring Mapfumo's music trying to convince the rebels that the musician was supporting the whites. Their ham-fisted endeavor failed miserably. of course.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:14am Brian in UK:

Funny, I was talking to someone at work today who hailed from Zimbabwe and we got to talking about Thomas.
  11:14am trs:

Hey - what's with all the naming and labeling of listeners per show?? It's marketing-technique for promoting affiliation, no?

I find it to be a segregating practice. Makes me think, 'bleg'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings and welcome, KevinfromBayridge! I'll let loose some cluster F-Bombs, just too shake things up.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:15am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

@trs
No segregation is occuring. Anyone who wants can "register" (see up top) and this will let you comment without having to do that stupid little math problem to prove you are a human. Once you are registered, you can choose your own avatar to go along with whatever name you chosen to comment under.
Avatar 11:18am ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

@trs
WFMU created a framework for a community of listeners/commentors called "the WFMU Friendship Society." Absolutely everyone is welcome to join. (And welcome not to, of course.) "Membership" allows certain levels of interactivity. For instance, you can contact other "members" directly if you like. There are other features, too. Mostly, it's a way to semi-privatize the commenting feature on the playlists to help keep the discussion from swirling down into the typical mess that befouls so many other public comment boards.

Any other listeners wanna describe their experience with this?
Avatar 11:26am Carmichael:

Hello Doug and all Websters. Is that spring sausage, like summer sausage? The Hickory Farms shop floor?

NDBob, are you leaving town for good, or just moving to your winter home in the Caymans?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:26am listener james from westwood:

commenting system has been an unwavering ascent in ease and utility since it launched, thanks to the mighty kenzo. fmu's playlists are one of the very few places where i not only read the comments, but post. i feel welcome and safe here.
  11:27am trs:

No. Not registration to comment. It's the labeling of listeners. eg 'trsties' if, say, I had a show named trs or something. It's intended to promote affiliation and it does the opposite to me.

I'm freaking exhausted of being tracked and labeled. Not to mention the mislabeling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

Wahoo, Carmichael's here!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:27am listener james from westwood:

i can count on 1 hand the number of ban-worthy folks who have dropped in, and they tend to self-select for extinction.
and the education! so many things to learn from fmu's dedicated, diverse listeners and other djs!!
Avatar 11:28am ndbob:

@Carmichael for good - I'm moving to Bloomington, Indiana - not quite the tropics, but compared to North Dakota it is - really looking forward to it
Avatar 11:29am ndbob:

exactly James
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:30am Brian in UK:

I was a bit doubtful of signing up, bit part of the Groucho skool of clubs. Since doing so I have contacted or been contacted by other listeners. You can decide to accept an invitation to talk or not. If you do the communication can be more relaxed in a one to one way. I have also swapped music & photographs with people in other countries. It is an earthshrinker.
The number of knob-heads is minimal and soon get short shrift.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:30am listener james from westwood:

trs, i see many of the same fine folks commenting on numerous fmu shows' playlists. not sure what you mean by folks being labeled. and if some folks fo hyper-identify with one show, they're still supporting the mothership by listening. doesn't take anything away from me. there are many, many wfmus even as there is only one fmu.
Avatar 11:31am Carmichael:

I don't believe I've ever been *tracked*, since I've never received any spam e-mails or anything else related to marketing. This isn't like Facebook; the posts and meta data go nowhere else in cyberland. I think it's mainly to keep the trolls off of the board. There was a lot of that stuff happening previously. Now it's pretty much gone completely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

@trs
I am confused. Do you feel that such "tracking" or "labeling" is taking place here? Or that anything at all is being "promoted"? Because none of that, whatever you mean by it, is happening. WFMU has no interest in any of that crap. In fact, it exists to be an alternative to and a sanctuary from that insidious commodification of humanity.
  11:31am trs:

Not to make a big stink about it. I just wanted to express the fact that it all has an opposite effect on me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

@trs
All that being said, I think you are absolutely right to be skeptical.
Avatar 11:33am Jeff:

Hey, Doug - did you happen to see my email of a few minutes ago?
Avatar 11:34am still b/p:

I don't think I understand the complaint. I don't mean I disagree, I mean really don't quite understand what the "it" is --- the details and meaning of it. But I'm curious. You mean the casual tossing around of "drummies" or such terms by commenters or DJs...? Is there some other more official auto-association going on in the system?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Mr. Jeff. I've been a smidge distracted. Will migrate "over there" now...
Avatar 🥁 11:34am duke:

There's no requirement to have a name to comment. If you leave the name blank, you show up as ?. (possibly confused with the leader of the Mysterions) I echo LJFW. My experience has been positive and I hate social networks like Facebook. Some djs are more active commentators and others never respond to comments. Some web listeners never comment, some are prolific. We're all here for the music anyway.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:35am Brian in UK:

Despite being Freeform to the hilt the audience is possibly non politically conservative. I would not be writing if I was not 100% confident in the infrastructure and integrity of this radio station.

@Jeff
I am playing an MP3 on Traktor right now and Traktor is not clipping. Neither are the meters on Nicecast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Uncle Michael:

@trs: Could you amplify on your "trsties" point? You mean like when I greet other Give the Drummer Radio listeners as "drumheads?"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:36am listener james from westwood:

duke, that's where fmu so wonderfully differs: no sign-in to comment. lots of places force you to use yr FB login for every damn thing. if i want that kind of spot-check, i'll go to my doc, turn my head, and cough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
I just dialed down a bit the levels on my MBox soundcard. Any better?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:39am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Uncle Michael:

@trs: I hope it's always clear that such terms of association are entirely left to the devices of those uttering them and in no way represent any official imprimatur.

I suppose that ensuring that this never feels like any kind collective experience could be undermined by reading or participating in the comments. Not engaging with the comments is a pretty good way of maintaining the purity of the radio experience. *shrug*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Uncle Michael:

Quite so, James.
Avatar 11:49am Carmichael:

@trs: You are now inside of the circle of trust. We'll all be over later this evening for charades and champagne.
Avatar 11:49am Carmichael:

Any time, Dougie. And the other DJs are not so *silent* about it, btw.

Once the FMU brain implant is perfected you won't even have to comment. You can just think "This tune sucks." and it will be instantly transmitted to FMU world headquarters.

Either one of our Spencers would enjoy a nice scrub'n'rub.

The next meeting of the clavern will take place shortly at www.wfmu.org...

I hope you'll join me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

The reality is that the overwhelming majority of listeners never comment. Joining in the conversation is totally voluntary. Personally, I adore the interaction. It helps personalize the experience from my end. But no one is compelled to contribute in the comments.

And as someone said earlier, you can always comments without giving a name, if that's preferable.

It is very HARD to remain silent, Carmichael. I wanna shout into the winds.

Avatar 11:57am ndbob:

nope - or one currently - though I hope to find one there - lotsof reasons to move - although there are many great things about North Dakota - I'd like a more intellectually stimulating place - one not so cold - and where advanced medical care is readily available if needed

I downloaded the Stax singles collection a few years ago, but only got around to putting the first few dozen tracks onto CD. Do tracks like the Shack number await me in the remainder?
