Shoot, what happened with iTunes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

The new version of iTunes gets hung up when I try to connect to my digital library. I can create new playlists and dump tracks in them. But when I try to pull up any of my existing mp3s, it crashes. I am miserable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Uncle Michael:

Do you need the ten foot pole I'm not using to touch iTunes with, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

Unka Mike, what do you use to organize your library?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:15am listener james from westwood:

itunes' updates never seem to benefit the user. downloading tv shows has become a stone PITA on the service.
Avatar 🥁 9:17am duke:

I couldn't even install the itunes update. It kept hanging in the middle of the download. Probably just as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Uncle Michael:

I don't organize it much. It's in a fairly messy directory structure. I copy files into folders for upcoming shows and load the contents of those folders into my DJ software as needed.
Avatar 9:25am ndbob:

I only use itunes for podcasts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Uncle Michael:

I used to use it for loading the iPod...I guess I still do...but I just don't anymore. I only use an iPod when I'm traveling and won't have a data connection. The rest of the time I use my mobile device to access my library, streams and podcasts remotely. It's nice to have a quarter million tracks in the car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Uncle Michael:

It's also nice to have a carrier with a real, unlimited data plan.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Alex In Illinois:

Same here about iTunes. I use the library only for loading my iPod. I don't like it when any kind of software tries to organize my music files, video files or pictures into its own "Library". There is already a perfectly good way to organize files--the Windows filing system.

As for iTunes updates, it seems like they have a new one every day. And I agree about iTunes trying to do too much.

I might just go back to having all of my mp3 players be devices made by Creative. Sometimes their mp3 players have a way to add additional memory.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy Alex and Shaun, Shaun and Alex!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

@k w
I don't believe Audrey was anywhere near the studio on for this show. I have many other Mother's Best transcriptions on which she is credited, but not here. So I guess not. Also, everyone seemed to be singing in tune. Another tip-off that she wasn't participating.

@glenn
I really think you are being unfair to Ms McCartney.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Uncle Michael:

I either just navigate my directories and play files in Windows Media Player, VLC or Foobar2000...or use the "virtual" Squeezebox player and navigate exactly the same way I do on my Squeezebox hardware and my mobile device.
Avatar 9:51am glenn:

Avatar 9:54am glenn:

it's kinda funny how many of these shows were sponsored by flour mills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Alex In Illinois:

As for organizing mp3s, I have my own hierachy of Windows folders, subfolder, subsubfolders, etc.

I have not had breakfast yet, and this set is making me crave biscuits and things like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

@K W
I downloaded 40 or 50 of these transcriptions about four years ago, but those links have long since dried up. This was before Time-Life came out with the commercial releases of many of them (editing out much of the wonderful between-song banter).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

@holland oats
There this ridiculous host on one of Pittsburgh's all-sports radio station's who goes by the name New York Vinnie. He finishes every broadcast in his cartoonish Brooklyn brogue saying, "We'll be back tomorrow if the good lord is willing and the creek don't rise." It is absurd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Alex In Illinois:

Two sides of Brooklyn get to fight it out over which has the more toxic waterway, the Gowanus Canal (which I used to live two blocks from) and the Newtown Creek (or Crick, if you prefer).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am tim from champaign:

heeheehee Brian. It was also pretty friggin great. How's that?

Yeah, they played for a little more than an hour. The show was held in the main gallery of the campus art museum. the sound in there is acoustically phenomenal. The trumpeter and sax man had some fun by playing in various parts of the room.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:58am Brian in UK:

Sounds great Tim there are some really good gigs around acoustically. I can help with the chicken feed.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Jeff Golick:

So, Uncle Michael, your remote access set-up -- your music is in a cloud? Wafting above a medaeval farm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

I don't know the question, Jeff, but the answer is STAY AWAY FROM THE LATEST iTUNES UPDATE.

You know me well, Shaun. Though this set will get less male at its end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Uncle Michael:

Only in the sense that my cloud is about 17" from my right foot, as we speak. I'd be happy to elucidate some time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Jeff Golick:

...curious about how you are accessing that cache remotely, via phone, e.g...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: I tend to avoid those updates until the grumbling from the field subsides...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael, I Love Elucidate. Please feel free to splain your set-up (in dumbed down terms) via email, when you have a free moment.

Speaking of Uncle Michael, EVERYONE stay tuned for Hinky Dinky Time, coming up next here on the Drummer Stream: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Uncle Michael:

Squeezebox is a hardware/software solution that's not conceived as a remote access solution. There are physical players and a server application that runs on a PC here in the studio. There are various virtual controllers that can run, without purchasing any hardware...and a little application that can make a controller a player on the system. So my phone is a player...my PCs are players, my tablet is a player. The software to do ALL of this is free and no hardware players are required.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
The latest iTunes update, which I idiotically decided to install just before working on today's show last night, has completely failed, leaving me no access to my digital library. The thing I am happiest about is that I did not actually punch my iMac in the face at 3am this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Jeff Golick:

GAH; nightmare.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Uncle Michael:

The server software is my "cloud." You point it at a the music library, it builds a database and it all becomes navigable. You can add streams, podcasts...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Uncle Michael:

I should say that there are other ways to do what I do but this works for me and I have three hardware devices that actually depend on this set up so I never explored Plex or any other solutions.
Avatar 11:36am Lewis:

@Doug - sorry I am multitasking to too high a degree. I just dropped in on your frustration with the new iTunes... The Steve I was referring too is Jobs. Fanatical perfectionism is hard to garner in his absence I fear.
