Yes indeed, duke, we do! Good morning to you and to you, too glenn! (Hey glenn, congrats on being Keili's comment of the week or whatever. You deserve it!)
Avatar 8:54am glenn:

i saw that. i laughed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
If a kitty pees on this broadcast, it will give 27th-century archaeologists something to chuckle about.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:55am Brian in UK:

Hey boss, is this the middle eight(teen)?

I seem to have come into the possession of Money Jungle. Wonder where the idea came from?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Double your Money Jungle back if you don't like it.
Avatar 8:59am glenn:

probably kenya or nairobi, or wherever all those princes with no cash and a lifetime supply of viagra come from.
Avatar 9:00am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey ndbob!

Avatar 9:04am doca:

Hello, Doug and Drummers!
And Gary, great show indeed, thanks. Looking forward for next Wednesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

Hola doca!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:05am listener james from westwood:

gary, i caught your maiden voyage in the archives, and it was a blast. hoping to catch the next one(s) live but i'm hooked either way!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:06am listener james from westwood:

doug, he did indeed, but he seems to be looking down his nose at the $20. might have to up him to a grant next time.
  9:06am gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

The band here with Mingus:

Jimmy Knepper ~ trombone
(Not yet Rahsaan) Roland Kirk ~ tenor sax, manzello & stritch
Doug Watkins ~ bass
Dannie Richmond ~ drums
Yusef Lateef ~ tenor sax
Avatar 9:15am doca:

Great track, Doug. Sometimes I forget how much I like Mingus' music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

@doca
Watch this AMAZING documentary featuring Mingus: vimeo.com...
Avatar 9:20am doca:

@Doug: I've seen it already a few years ago, but thanks to reminding me of it. At the time I didn't know much English and I suffered a little bit watching it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Uncle Michael:

I don't *feel* tardy?
Avatar 🥁 9:22am duke:

You need drumpants www.drumpants.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Doug Schulkind:

@doca
I think that film will reveal more and more with each viewing, regardless of your English comprehension.

@Uncle Michael
Just not late for dinner...

The theremin is upsetting my dog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Uncle Michael:

Give her two tablespoons of of extra strength Theremin(tm).
Avatar 9:24am glenn:

didn't john otway invent drum pants, if i remember rightly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

Much easier than the Theremin(tm) suppositories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

@glenn
How much does an Otway?
Avatar 9:27am PKNY:

Good morning Doug and everyone, and much love to Yusef Lateef, RIP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

The first tenor was Shepp; this here is Lateef.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Top of the morning to you, PKNY!
Avatar 9:30am glenn:

i don't know, but john otway put on a very entertaining show, although wild willy had left by the time i saw him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Doug Schulkind:

The terrific Avery Sharp on bass here. Not flat at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Doug Schulkind:

I think of this as one of Yusef's "newer" recordings, but it's 22 years old. He kept on performing and recording long past this (made when he was 72).
Avatar 9:37am doca:

Adventuresome jazz must give some superpowers to its performers, because it's incredible the vitality those guys have even when they reach or pass the 70 or 80 years old barrier
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

You said it, doca. Well into his 80s, Yusef was still doing these incredible circular breathing passages which took mighty lung power. I guess it helped that Yusef never smoked (or at least if he had, he stopped in 1948 when he converted to Islam.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Gary:

In the office now & plugged in, yay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

GarYay.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:50am Artie:

Whoa, this band is *so* locked in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

Yay Artie!

Sam Jones' bass playing here behind the piano solo is genius stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

Gorgeous duet alert...gorgeous duet alert...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Gary:

Catching up on the comments ... and am now Googling "drum pants"
  9:55am earrie:

That was fantastic. Terrific. Stir-rific.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Hi earrie!
  9:57am earrie:

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Gary:

These drum pants I'm checking out do NOT go with this gorgeous duet. Can I get them altered?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

The pianist here is Kenny Barron. His older brother Bill was a magnificent sax player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Bill Barron led a tremendous short-lived group with trumpeter Ted Curson. Ted Curson played, of course, with Charlie Mingus. He joined Mingus about the same time Yusef left mingus' workshop band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am holland oats:

Heartbreakingly beautiful!

Howdy and welcome bibi!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:05am Artie:

Are those bass drum pants, or has daddy been getting into the smothered pork chops again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

This trombone-sounding instrument is actually a euphonium. Courtesy of Bernard McKinney (later he changed his name to Kiane Ziwadi).
Avatar 10:11am glenn:

mmmm. what are smothered pork chops smothered in?
Avatar 10:12am still b/p:

Drumpants link was sent to me last month by a friend with the subject, "ahhh...your perfect Xmas gift." But he ddin't put them under my tree.

My arteries did NOT appreciate that link.
Avatar 10:27am Lewis:

@Artie - as doug said ... Where is that restaurant?! (i didn't get breakfast this morning due to a convergence of those little things that put you slightly off step…)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

Hallo Lewis!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:30am Artie:

@Lewis - Pork Chops courtesy of Mr Wonderful's Chicken & Waffles, on the east side of Raleigh NC. I ate that plate, and the nice lady even brought me a waffle to go with. First rate soul food.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

And hallo to you, still b/p. I didn't see you standing behind the wall of speakers.
Avatar 10:35am glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

Oob βrian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

This poem by Yusef appears on the back jacket of the LP The Blue Yusef Lateef:

True love is rare
Honest love is scarce
Emotional love is common

Brotherly love is enduring
Love is everywhere
Understanding love is a must
Enriched love is a trust

Yearning for love is natural
Using love is sublime
Seeing love is beautiful
Enhancing love is divine
Forgetting love is pitiful

Leaving love is sorrowful
Absorb love and tingle
Try love, it works
Eliminate love and perish
Eternal love is joy
Following love leads to peace
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

Absorb love and tingle = !

Also, read down the first line of characters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Uncle Michael:

Damn, this is good.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:08am listener james from westwood:

daaaamn. this show runs 6 hours, right? the noon–3 half gets broadcast on the double secret drummer stream while uncle michael spins on the main gtdr stream, right? right??!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Rich in Washington:

Wow. I'm here at work, trying to figure out why I have NO AUDIO WHATSOEVER coming out of my system.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

No, Listener James, but I have hypnotized Uncle Michael into playing nothing but Yusef. So why bother with the double secret stream!!

Bassist Bob Cunningham is your narrator here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Yikes Rich in Washington. Anyone else having audio probs?
Avatar 11:15am Lewis:

@Doug - this is great! I have never really listened to Yusef Latee and this show is opening up a whole new bit of our musical university.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Rich in Washington:

Ah, got it!
My mixer was unplugged!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Rich in Washington:

Sounds great now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Rich in Washington:

I 2nd what Lewis said: had only a casual knowledge of Yusef's music until his unfortunate passing. Been listening to this episode since the beginning (except for my commute) and it's all incredible.
  11:21am earrie:

I sure hear an openness in the stereo in this track (listening in headphones).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

I will be doing two more 3-hour Yusef shows over the next two Fridays. Here are links to the previous programs

Program 1: wfmu.org...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Ironic that I played "Technological Homosapien" while, apparently, President Obama was giving a speech on surveillance and the NSA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

One of the founders of the AACM in Chicago, Jodie Christian, plays some background keyboards on this album. Also the monster drummer Bernard Purdie is here. Yowza!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

To see an amazing clip of Yusef performing this live on Norwegian television, go to Youtube and search for "yusef lateef norway robot man." That should do the trick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Rich in Washington:

@earrie: changes to my office environment mean I have to listen to everything on headphones now but it's good. It's like getting 60% more out of any given show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

Yusef doing Erik Satie, next.
  11:36am earrie:

@Rich Yeah. It's like glasses for the ears. Hope you have a nice long cord on a comfy pair of 'phones.
Avatar 11:38am northguineahills:

Wasn't jass slang for flatulence in some circles at the turn of the 20th century?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

Almost certainly, NGH. In some circles, jazz simply meant sex. In the early 20th century, jazz music was relegated to being played in whorehouses, so yeah.
  11:42am earrie:

I learned this Gymnopédies on piano, recently. So lovely, I sometimes forget to play while I'm listening.
Avatar 11:43am Carmichael:

Good morning Doug and Yusef. Better late than never.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Uncle Michael:

I hope you'll all join me in the next room for three hours of music you never knew Yusef Lateef had a hand in. www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

The drummer on the previous track is also here on this Magnolia Triangle. In fact he, James Black, is its composer.

Hey-O Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

More vocals from the Sweet Inspirations (led by Whitney Houston's mom, Cissy) and more drumming from Bernard Purdie and also conga from Ray Barretto!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Uncle Michael:

Crazy Bernard sounds great.
