Hello ndbob!

Howdy all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Yoyoyo, Gary!
Avatar 6:01pm ndbob:

Heya Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Jeff Golick:

Haven't seen that Seeger/Dylan/Newport '65 ax(e) story in recent days. Is that apocryphal?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Yes, the axe story is a bullshitrophal.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:05pm listener james from westwood:

how do, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Jeff Golick:

Excited for this! I no know Nathan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Mr. Seeger claims that he was not upset about Dylan "going electric," he was upset the the horrible mix was making Dylan's vocals unintelligible. People in the crowd started booing when the emcee for that portion of the evening (either Peter or Paul from PP&M) tried to hurry Dylan's act off the stage in order to keep to the schedule.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Donald Byrd on trumpet here with Dolphy and Davis. Byrd would later be instrumental in encouraging Davis to take the job at the Univ. of Pittsburgh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Oh HEY, Listener James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Jeff Golick:

How likely is it that the Nathan Davis playing percussion on this Zorn record - www.discogs.com... - is the same ND?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Gary:

New to me as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Doug Schulkind:

@JeffG
Not the same ND. That ND has appeared live on WFMU. On Kurt Gottschalk's Miniature Minotaurs show. Either that or there are THREE Nathan Davises.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Doug Schulkind:

This record, Rules of Freedom, was recorded a few months after John Coltrane died. Trane's long-time bassist, Jimmy Garrison is on this record, which features a track titled "Blues for Trane."

The pianist is, fascinatingly, Hampton Hawes. Art Taylor is on drums. Davis is on soprano sax.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Jeff Golick:

Hampton Hawes wrote a great autobio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Doug Schulkind:

My wife and daugther have just left the house to go hear a talk by our dear Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

@Jeff Golick
That is a FANTASTIC autobio. Raise Up Off Me is one of my favorite books on music.
Avatar 6:15pm glenn:

did you make the wings, gary?
Avatar 6:16pm ndbob:

wow Doug - I'd like to hear her
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Jeff Golick:

I should probably revisit that book. Even the title is amazing.
Avatar 6:16pm ndbob:

no one will go out here tonight unless it's an emergency
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Big ice storm a-coming this way, ndbob.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Gary:

glenn, I did NOT make the wings yet.
Avatar 6:20pm ndbob:

Yep - saw that Doug - we are on the edge of of snow and ice tonight - probably mostly snow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Doug Schulkind:

I am not at all sure when Davis traveled to Turkey to record this. (I mean, it was 1977, obviously, I just don't know the circumstances.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Gary:

You knew in advance I'd be favoriting this one, I bet
Avatar 6:26pm northguineahills:

*tip-toes in* , phew, Nathan Davis is still alive! (right?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi northguineahills! I am happy report that Nathan Davis is very much alive. In fact, he turns 77 on February 15. (Also my wife's birthday.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
I've already favorited your opening cut. Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

The next track was recorded with monks. No, not Monk, monks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Davis is on bass clarinet here. He must've spend some amazing times sharing the bandstand with Eric Dolphy while Dolphy was shredding the bass clarinet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Stanley:

Hi Doug
I'm here but I've had a night on the beer!
Burp! (pardon me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Jeff Golick:

Well this is perhaps more enjoyable than a song called "Slave March" should be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Doug Schulkind:

@Stanley
Good glug to you, Sir!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Almost sounds like an electric sax like Eddie Harris used to play. An otherwordly sound to my ears. (We have the monks to thank, maybe.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Matt from Springfield:

They give these jazz performances at a Benedictine monastery, and convince you that's how they spend *every* day! That's where the monks get ya...Thelonious Monks, too...

Hi Doug and Drummers! This kicks frogs ass!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Yeah, Matt from Springfield, yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Gary:

Speaking of monks and beer and burping ... there's an odd theme bar in the east village called Burp Castle. The place looks sort of like a monastery, the bartenders wear monk robes and shush everyone when the noise gets above a certain level
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Art Taylor is on drums here (another longtime ex-pat, like Davis). Jimmy Woode is on bass. He spent some quality time with Eric Dolphy, too. The brilliant Mal Waldron is playing piano in this quartet session.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Matt from Springfield:

@Gary: Makes me think of a "library" tavern--they would have books and games sitting around, but would shush you if it gets too noisy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Stanley:

Seriously digging this Nathan Davis and so happy the guy is still extant. Same age as my old man. Love live you, Sir (and long live my old man).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Jeff Golick:

Arg. Gotta go run and feed the little ones. And the kids, too, I suppose.

Bye, everyone! Archives, ho!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Now I see where your priorities are.

Glug to your pops, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Matt from Springfield:

@Stanley Long live 77s!!

@Jeff G: Bye! Enjoy eating with your children, 1s, and any young goats around!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Doug Schulkind:

They say that children who eat dinner with their parents regularly are about 127% more likely to go to college.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: "I needed to change, not the record"--don't we all have stories like that! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

As an undergrad, Nathan Davis went to the University of Kansas. One of his pals there on campus was a DJ and athlete named... Wilt Chamberlin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Matt from Springfield:

Makes sense. Parents who place a value on that are more likely to raise strong, college-bound kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Doug Schulkind:

Billie Holiday with Strings is another of those "I had to change, not the record" records for me. I'm so glad I changed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Uncle Michael:

WHAT A NAP!
Avatar 6:53pm ndbob:

wow Doug... ever hear Wilt Chamberlain's 45 - "By the River"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: The best example for me may be avant-garde recordings, like Laurie Anderson. When I was 20 I rediscovered her and finally saw the light.

Wow, funny how famous people have often met like that, before they were well known!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Uncle Michael:

Wilt was my aunt's high school classmate at Omaha Central High...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
Why no I haven't!

@Uncle Michael
Rise and shine, handsome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Uncle Michael:

Wait...her classmate might have been Gale Sayers. NM!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:55pm listener james from westwood:

lovely dinner music tonight. (crazy long day at the computer, so actually ate at the dining room table for once.) many thanks for the nathan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Doug Schulkind:

This LP "If" must have some killer drum breaks on it. Otherwise, I can't understand what made it such a hot commodity on the Japanese DJ market.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James
I guess you could say you went to Nathan's for dinner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Matt from Springfield:

Nathan's one hot dawg!
Avatar 6:58pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Matt from Springfield:

Can one be a hot dog, and cool cat at the same time??...

No way to know for sure what the Japanese will end up liking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Doug Schulkind:

I relish that comment, Matt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Matt from Springfield:

Just ketching up with my puns, Doug.
Avatar 6:59pm northguineahills:

Thanks, it's been a blast Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Doug Schulkind:

My pleasure, NGH, ndbob and n-everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Gary:

Oh, wait -- it's already 7? Thanks for the awesome hour!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the last 20 minutes, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Matt from Springfield:

Great jams, thanks Doug! Will have to check out more Nathan Davis!

Have a great evening everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Parq:

Hey, Doug. Only got to hear 40 mins of the show, but great blowin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Hope you didn't the extra blowingest 20 minutes, Parq!
  1:05pm Listener Gregory:

Very interesting show, Doug. Nathan Davis somehow had totally escaped my notice.
Just to answer your question about Jimmy Woode, he is often referred to by Phil Schaap, who interviewed him about his time in the Ellington Orchestra. Schaap always pronounces his name like "woody."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for confirming that, Listener Gregory!
