And all hail Sweet Mother Kale, of course. A nice chiffonade, lightly steamed. then dressed with almonds, lemon, and olive oil.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:52am listener james from westwood:

ndbob: I don't know if broccoli roasts as well as cauliflower or Brussels sprouts do, but that might be an option. Roast it, squeeze of lemon, bit of extra virgin olive oil, some herbs....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

You know, I am in pretty much a constant rage about Ken Burns' 19-hour documentary "Jazz," which refused to recognize or acknowledge the influence or even existence of jazz beyond American borders. How absurd and outrageous!!!

Somebody, talk me of the ledge!

Been a lotta earthquakes in the past couple of weeks, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Doug, at least Burns hinted at the fact that some white people played some jazz, allegedly.
Avatar 10:53am ndbob:

Jazz Burns Ken
Avatar 10:55am northguineahills:

Ken Burns also didn't cover any jazz after 1958, either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

Meanwhile, there's this (which hits a little close to home): www.nbcnews.com...

@northguineahills
That's not quite right. Ken Burns had Branford Marsalis badmouth Cecil Taylor for about 30 seconds. That was post-1958.
  11:00am Cecile:

That's what you get when you have Wynton Marsalis as your jazz guide.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am holland oats:

drumma! peoples!
Avatar 11:01am ndbob:

and speaking of marimba bands - I used to have some Guatemalan marimba band records from the 1910s
  11:02am Cecile:

Branford actually did a nice doc where free jazz was covered respectfully. He is not the traditionalist his brother is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

@Cecile
And Stanley Crouch and Albert Murray. Jeez! Could Burns have assembled a group of smaller-minded people? (Rhetorical question, no need to respond.)

Branford was pretty awful toward "free jazz" in the Burns doc. Maybe he felt the need to apologize.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am holland oats:

how many times does wynton say "it's like gumbo" in that thing, maybe 30?
  11:05am Cecile:

I heard he really liked Ornette and Steve Lacy. I never saw Jazz so I don't know.
Avatar 11:05am northguineahills:

Hasn't Branford played w/ William Parker?
Avatar 11:06am Holly in NC:

@ndbob - I bet my mother could've converted you with "Aunt Edna's Broccoli Casserole" - 2 boxes frozen chopped broccoli (defrosted) mixed w. an entire large box of Velveeta, cubed - topped with 1 cylinder of Ritz crackers (crushed) and a whole stick of melted butter. 50s white trash food at its finest. Haven't had in years but I bet I could still eat the whole (9x13) pan.

btw I LOVE broccoli. After ages of lightly steaming, roasting, sauteeing etc I've been rediscovering loooonnnng braising (i.e., making mush) which is sinfully good. I get plenty of vitamins elsewhere :-)

I shall never give up the funkship, Mr C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@Cecile
I should get a job faking foreign accents. I once got a "good job" on my Portuguese from a listener in Rio De Janeiro. The secret is sounding confident in yourself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Stanley:

Music is Latin, singing is African?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
If you don't stay tuned and listen to Uncle Michael's Hinky Dinky Time radio show, up next on the Drummer Stream (playlist here: wfmu.org...) I will send Vinko Globokar over to your house to play YOU!
Avatar 11:22am Van in DC:

Doug, you mentioned the Thai music site...I had that link at one time but new computer, lost my bookmarks. Is that site still active by chance?
Avatar 11:23am Cecile:

Wait..I remember Branford Marsalis being instrumental in getting David S. Ware signed to Columbia back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

In every man, a little bit of dog.

@Cecile
Not so sure that David S. Ware getting signed to Columbia was a good thing. Pretty sure Ware didn't have positive things to say about it. I could be wrong, but that is my recollection.

See ya later, ngh!

Brief moment offline and then I hope to be able to pick the station up at the gym!

Let us name the dancing hamsters Vinko Globokar and Keyser Söze and so we make these names less terrible and lighten our fear.
Avatar 11:37am Cecile:

it wasn't a great thing at the time, but for a lot of people it was how they learned about him. And one of the discs that still can be found. And it's a decent one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

Dan Greer sound quite Jerry Williams Jr-ish (aka Swamp Dogg) here .
Avatar 11:41am earrie:

Citations are an amazing thing, aren't they?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
Done and done. Vinko and Keyser shall dance eternal.
Avatar 11:47am Van in DC:

Dancing? Looks like they're sleep walking to me ha ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Sloooow dancing, Van.
Avatar 11:49am Cecile:

slow. real. slow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

Excellent point, Cecile. Major label can have longer-range benefits for artists, even if they suck for them in the short term.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Uncle Michael:

I think they're mimes...pretending to be trapped in an aquarium.
Avatar 11:52am Cecile:

damn this is a great take on Everyday People. Solid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

Don't y'all forget to get Hinky Dinkied: wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:53am Cecile:

even if the only reason is that there are more copies in the used bins than indie label releases.
Avatar 11:53am Cecile:

If I ever make a movie, this song will be in there somewhere.

Great great show today, Doug.

See you all shortly!
Avatar 11:57am earrie:

I'm left demanding evidence on all that big label talk. But meh, I don't really care anyway, so.

Lovely listening, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Stanley:

Great show, Doug.
I love my Friday afternoons!
