I am not archiving this program because this labor-of-love documentary is available for purchase directly from the producer: www.artistowned.com

more specifically: www.artistowned.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for the more direct link, Artie. It is C R A Z Y that this entire documentary is available for only $15. It is one of the best pieces of anything on jazz I've ever heard/read/watched.
Avatar 6:10pm Aurélie E:

thank u Doug, I dont know John Coltrane very well, just heard the classics but not tht much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Doug Schulkind:

The phenomenal producer/director of this documentary, Steve Rowland, was generous enough to allow me to offer the complete documentary as a WFMU marathon premium back in 2007. I am forever grateful to him for that.

If you happened to hear my Abdul Wadud special a few weeks back, I played an hour-long duet between Wadud on cello and the poetry of Michael S. Harper. WORTH checking out of you missed it.

I heard it. Here's Harper at Berkeley six years ago.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Doug Schulkind:

Frank Kofsky wrote an infamous book called Black Nationalism and the Revolution in Black Music. It was infamous for pushing an agenda of radicalism on the avant garde that wasn't authentic to the all of the artists' intentions. Kind of the reverse of the more typical white media person softening the stance of black radicalism. Nevertheless, the book was a HUGE influence on me.

Hi and welcome, Diane!!

It appears the Kofsky book was "expanded and revised" as John Coltrane and the Jazz Revolution of the 1960s in 1998. Kofsky published a handful of books, including titles about Harry Truman and Lenny Bruce!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Wow. I wasn't aware of that. I wonder if Kofsky addresses the criticism he received from many in the black artists' community.

The black nationalism that Kofsky wrote about was real and true, it just wan't as intertwined with the avant garde jazz world as he lead readers to believe. it is fascinating to hear his interviews with Coltrane and others where he is trying to get his subjects to confirm his political agenda. And they gently correct him.

I suspect white listeners weren't (aren't?) terribly well positioned -- culturally, socially --- to suss out the difference between "fierceness" and "anger," as was just elucidated.

A glance at the excerpt from the preface on Amazon suggests Kofsky did address the charges against him.

Back in "the day" (mostly the '80s) Pacifica's station in LA, KFPK, featured a couple shows devoted to black nationalism. Fascinating stuff, among the reasons I subscribed. Shortly, though, new management purged the programming in an effort to turn Pacifica into NPR. I've never forgiven them!

Just elucidated indeed, Jeff Golick.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Gary:

Doug, do you know the time frame when the interviews took place?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Doug Schulkind:

I grew up listening to WPFW, the Pacifica station in Washington, DC. The staff was mostly black and the radical voices were celebrated, not purged. WPFW was my early introduction to the idea that radio was something you DID and not just listened to. I adored WPFW.

Interesting. I grew up in the DC suburbs, loved radio since I was wee, and got into listening to WDCU and WPFW along the way. Definitely got me started along the path to listening to good Jazz, Soul and African music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Doug Schulkind:

I never heard WDCU, Artie. For me it was WPFW and WHFS and Georgetown's station before it got take off the air.
