Here — www.shamshadbegum.com — is a simply wonderful interview with Shamshad Begum from 2012. What a humble and amazing woman!

Hello ndbob and Holly in NC! :-)

Goodbye, Percy Sledge :-(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Welcome welcome, Listener James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Gary:

This is great -- she already sounds like her rowdy older self
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Not from her first film, but one of her earliest, in 1941.
  6:10pm Maricôt:

Good evening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, Maricôt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

The scene from Awaara that this song accompanies is stunning. Worth checking out YouTube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Gary:

The whole film Awaara is totally great -- one of my top films of all time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Doug Schulkind:

I fave that comment, Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Doug Schulkind:

Here's another wonderful O.P. Nayyar composition...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Gary:

OMFG I totally forgot about this song -- It's picturized on Shammi Kapoor in drag
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Doug Schulkind:

The music for Bluff Mater was composed by the amazing team Kalyanji Anandjii. If you dig the O.P. Nayyar, stay tuned for this next selection from the 1968 flick Kismat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Doug Schulkind:

MUST SEE, Gary. Must must.
Avatar 6:57pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Gary, would you say that the real quality that distinguishes Begum from her main "competition" is her range. Asha had the high register, Lata the low, and Shamshad had the whole damn thing. Would that be fair to say?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, ndbob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Gary:

I dunno -- I think of Shamshad as having the powerful voice out of the three. Asha kind of jazzy and squirrely, Lata aiming for the ether (ghost-voice) and Shamshad as maybe .... earthy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Gary:

Like in this track, for instance, she's just markedly LOUDER than Asha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Doug Schulkind:

Yes, the power of Shamshad's voice is often the first quality swooned over.

You may never live down the "jazzy and squirrely" comment, however...(!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Gary:

There are many, many things I will never live down, I'm afraid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Doug Schulkind:

I would call Asha "wifty and shifty." Shamshad is crisp and clear with every note articulated. It obviously it takes power to maintain that through difficult passages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Doug Schulkind:

And one final track, from...1970!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Doug Schulkind:

WFMU's DJ emeritus and provocateur-in-chief Kenny G once ran into Asha Bhosle in a restaurant in the East Village. He described the absurd encounter to those of us at the station at the time and our ancestors ancestors will continue to be embarrassed on behalf of all that is good and proper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Gary:

Whoa, that's amazing. My sole Asha brag is that I saw her perform at Carnegie Hall -- she was great
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:11pm listener james from westwood:

Stunning survey, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Doug Schulkind:

My sublimest pleasure, Listener James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Gary:

Thanks for the super-awesome Shamshad show!
