We're hanging in with varying levels of fingernails-scrabbling-at-the-shifting-shale-of-the-pit-of-despair, TDK60. About like everyone, I suppose. Planning an expedition to the exotic shores of Jersey City tomorrow to drop off some Greenpoint goodies for the Skeleteam, which will hopefully be a pleasant change of pace and place for the day!

Well, I'm not much a dessert person, but I actually like them. Those who enjoy dessert and eat other doughnuts confirm that these are the best in the city. David, one of my best "always love to try out new material on the road" moments was at the Coliseum in Rome. As the tour guide was herding the group together, I raised my hand and asked, "And just so I understand -- this *is* where Jesus fought the dragon, right?"

You could tell everyone *wanted* it to have been true.

It also has lots of fun inspirational bits of things to have druids spout off about for my game.

Yes, Dig A Pony still sounds fresh. Spector was suitable for their solo stuff, but Let It Be is a bit tired, even if Lennon thought Spector saved the album (can't point the exact quote right now).
  4:41pm
Mark R:

Opinions are divided on the Naked/Original mix of "Let It Be." I prefer the "Naked," mainly for the same reason Paul hated the Spector mix--I didn't think a great song like "The Long and Winding Road" needed all the choirs and bullshit that Spector piled on. He did do some clever things with the insertions of little bits of dialogue etc. It was a difficult project all around, I suppose. I'm looking forward to seeing the new film that shows a side of the sessions that's not nearly as dire as the original film showed. It's supposed to be out soon, but I've been hearing that for a few months now.

The thing that always perplexed me about "All Things Must Pass" is, Phil Spector recorded the Chiffons song "He's So Fine," and at no time during the recording of "My Sweet Lord" does Phil, say, "Hey, wait a minute--this melody is very, very familiar." FWIW, I think George LIKED Spector's production of that album. He had a chance to do his own "naked" version of it when he re-issued it a few years ago, and he left the Spector mix intact. Also agree about Spector's production of "Plastic Ono Band"--it's perfect. Bare bones, very raw. "I Found Out" sounds like an early punk record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
WaffleMix:

Coel, according to Paul, the first time he heard all that crap was when he heard the song on the radio. That's how bad relations were between the Beatles at the time. John in particular was feeling particularly bitter towards Paul. I know all that softened in later years and they were friends again. Paul seems to get along fine with Yoko these days. Life's too short for grudges.

My favorite embarrassing interview story is a friend of mine who interviewed Devo, and he didn't really know too much about them, their first record had just come out, and he asked, "So...where did you guys meet?" Mark is that movie going to attempt to rewrite history? i heard an interview at the time of the 50th anniversary of the white album with someone... Sean? i've forgotten for the moment but someone close, and younger...someone who'd like people to think differently about it all, despite the well-documented shitshow that was the beatles at that time. trying to say they all got along pretty well and things weren't bad.
this despite George quitting and Ringo quitting and John threatening to quit and John not showing up and getting left out of recording sessions and many songs on that album not being the beatles at all but solo performances...

I think the first Doors album was the best, and really one of the best albums of the 60s, period. Their sound was totally original, Morrison's lyrics were like nothing anybody else was writing, they were really, really great. They had many fine moments after that, but, that first album is really tough to beat.

Cha Cha i don't know . i thought they were bland and boring, but not embarrassingly bad like soft parade... but in any case i don't include those in my brain when i think about doors albums.
  5:28pm
Mark R:

Generally think Nico's kind of an Emperor's New Clothes kind of deal, but her version of "The End" is so haunting and tortured. In the film "Danny Says" (about Elektra A & R man and all around bon vivant), she and Morrison were having a tumultuous affair while he was "babysitting" Morrison at some house in L.A., with Morrison at one point threatening to jump off the roof. And of course, most of us have seen the film of a drunken Jim dancing along a window ledge about 40 floors above Manhattan. The guy was an accident waiting to happen. Had he not died on July 3rd, 1971, he probably would have died on July 4th. He had a death wish.

Last hour theme proposal (I know, I've reached quota): bands or songs or both that have to do with architectural elements. So, for example, The Doors. Magazine's "Song From Under the Floorboards," Jack Wilkins' "Windows" (song by Chick Corea), Cecil Taylor's "The Hearth"... Can't think of any more, but the Taylor disc alone, a single track, runs more than an hour.

People still say ‘I don’t like The Doors because of Jim Morrison’s persona’ (as if many of his peers were any the less objectionable), but that was half a century ago now, man, move on. It’s perfectly possible to listen to The Doors now divorced from that. As for his ‘pretentious’ poetry / lyrics, well, Lou Reed had plenty of form in that department and few people seem to still give him any gyp over it. Lay all the rest aside and Morrison had a wonderful voice, and they wrote great songs. The footage of him singing Moonlight Drive at the Isle of Wight festival is just unbelievable.
