The nice thing about that period of BeachBoys not being as popular & credited as it should have been - is it's fresher now. Seems to me they were doing something like what TheBeatles did on AbbeyRoad (which owes something to them) - but for a couple years.

Cool Anthology memories! I remember it well. ABC ran a countdown clock on the screen before the premiere. I had my VCR fired up and ready. Bought vol.1 and loved it for the rare stuff, but still don't like the voiceovers playing over the songs, and all the fades. I won vol. 2 on a radio trivia contest. Liked it, but again didn't like the crossfades and combined takes versus letting the tape roll like the Unsurpassed Masters and Ultra Rare Trax bootlegs. I sat in with a band who only knew the vol. 3 versions of some Abbey Road songs, I would say how about the original version...and they wouldn't know it. Odd.

Interesting track from Leo Nocentelli — was there any bass on that track? Just acoustic guitars and drums, right? Such a departure from the Meters, which was all about the tightest and funkiest rhythm section.

Why don't you rerun the Michael Shelley Christmas Carol from last year?
  12:09pm
gf2002:

@Montmaster Yes! And there was a third track that never made it through the process because they said the tape noise was too bad. "Now And Then", the lost Threetles song. I personally love the two released tracks especially George's incredible slide work on "Free As A Bird". That slide guitar brings a tear to the eyes, that one
Avatar 12:10pm
Michael Shelley:

I think the real reason for no 3rd track was George thought it wasnt good enough of a song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Montmaster J:

@gf....absolutely. Hearing John's voice again did it for me. I did not know about the third track. Also a John demo? With the upcoming doc I'm really looking to seeing the entire rooftop concert which I think is 40 plus minutes.....
  12:12pm
Mike Sin:

@MichShell — will email ya off the board!
  12:12pm
gf2002:

I've heard several reasons for "Now And Then" too, I guess it depends on who is telling the story. They also had "Grow Old With Me" on deck, but that had already come out on "Milk And Honey" so it wouldn't be as "new" I guess. Ringo recently released a pretty good version of that one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah George had had enuff - is what they say.
I think 'Free Is a Bird' is a *great Beatles* song. John is there - who's missing tho' is #5 - GeorgeMartin. 'Real Love' tho' - I like John's raw demo versions (as in the 'Imagine' doc) better...
  12:15pm
gf2002:

But yes, George did not like "Now And Then" at all, in part because it was too unfinished apparently, among his other reasons. And there was a bad hum in the tape according to others, so that never went beyond one day of work or something before it got scrapped.

Michael: YES! I love this Carl Perkins session, before I even saw the video I found it on a Harrison bootleg and played this endlessly. Same with the Sun Medley, with George nailing the Scotty Moore part on That's Alright Mama. George with his Gretsch and those licks stole the show.
  12:34pm
DG:

I thought "Real Love" wasn't a great song & the band version didn't really work, due to the low-quality of the original demo (Lennon sounds like he's in a box, apart from the other 3). "...Bird," though, was great....the ghostly vocal and musical & vocal additions by the other 3 was a suitable finale/farewell for the band, I thought. And that video still gets me---one of the most creative & moving videos of all time.

I loved Free As A Bird when it came out, and that amazing video too. But what really brought it to another level was an interview with Geoff Emerick where he said that slide guitar solo was like George's tribute to John, talking to him through the music. I still can't hear it without getting a little choked up, find me the best technical guitarists working today and they wouldn't be able to do what George did with his guitar on that track. Absolutely stunning guitar playing.

That Perkins special is great & was sort of a comeback for G. Harrison, who hadn't been heard from during that time (during that 5-year gap between "Gone Troppo" & "Cloud 9"). I had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Perkins about 10 years later & he was as humble & self-effacing as you'd think.

You probly know the story Carl was visiting Macca - & played him that song as a Thank You for their welcome, saying it just came to him - & Paul got quite emotional - because it had a line that was the last thing John said to him.

If people are looking for "My Old Friend" it's only on a Perkins album, "Go Cat Go" from '95 or so. It was the 2nd Carl & Paul duet (the other is "Get It" on Paul's "Tug of War"), & that album also includes a great duet w/Harrison too. Don't think those cuts are available anywhere else (the album also features Ringo & John, but on live cuts that were already available).
