The dieresis (not an umlaut though it looks the same) means that the vowel sign it's over is to be pronounced separately, and not as part of a diphthong—so it tells you that 'coïncidence' is _not_ 'COY-ncidence'. Diereses vanished almost entirely in the U.S. to keep typewriters simple and out of misguided simplification, but now with computers maybe they'll come back.
