I saw Laurie Anderson at a small venue in Seattle in 2018 performing "All the Things We Lost in the Flood." A transcendent show, just Laurie, her laptop, a keyboard and a violin. It was a retrospective of her life and art, but it was like no other show I could describe. A beautiful and intimate experience.

she gave a talk at Rutgers (Mason Gross School of the Arts?) when i was at Douglass, waaaaaay back in the late 70s -- STILL kicking myself for missing that
i did, however, get to see her at Prospect Park some years ago -- truly felt like being transported to another realm

@Gurldoggie: Roy Edroso, one of my favorite political satirist writers, recently lauded Laurie Anderson's "The Weather" exhibit at the Hirschhorn in D.C. and completely re-evaluating his youth dislike of her work as "respectable avant-garde." My only thought was good, but what took you so long, man?

SheilaB - your comments about record collecting -- been there. A number of years ago (6-7 years ago?) I downsized a BUNCH of my 45s. Because I wasn't playing out as often, and I didn't want a museum of 45s, they are meant to be enjoyed. Since then - I have re-procured a NUMBER of 45s I parted with. Still not playing out (now because of pandemic and because I fall asleep too early) but having them to spin at home for dance parties with the fam is fun.

@Jocelyn Very sorry to hear. Ebay is a lifesaver in that regard. Can't count how many 1 cent CD's I purchased off there. Many sellers are current or former DJs, so they do deals and it all ships from one place.

@myself - and yet! A few times every year I wonder ... is it time to 'unburden' myself from these? Are people going to be interested in listening to soul 45s 10, 20 years from now when many approach the 80/90 years old point? Will Northern Soul 45s that currently sell for 4 figures sell for PENNIES at that point? *Shrug...* I will say that visiting area record store again every so often, after not being in-store for over 12 mos is therapeutic, browsing and listening in-store. And when I do listen at home we have fun!

@SheilaB -- agreed on the FLUFF. I "found" 3 boxes of soul 45s last weekend that I thought were misc 80s new wave/synth pop but were in fact soul 45s that I hadn't looked at in who knows how long. None of my 45s are organized beyond "oh yeah I think I know where that is" and I want to alphabetize (someday) so that I can get rid of doubles and fluff.

It has been years ago since I sold records. I had for instance everything by Pink Floyd, but when I realised I always returned to the Syd Barrett period, I sold everything after More, except for Dark side of the moon and Wish you were here. No regrets about that decision. In my schooldays I swapped a lot because I didn't have the money to buy everything. In that way I swapped a lot singles that are now rare, but I also got a lot of those back. I don't buy that much since I retired 2 years ago and don't come in Utrecht each day anymore. The place I live in doesn't have a record shop. I'm happy with what I have and only go for new records if I really like them. But I realize that must be completely different for a deejay. But don't get rid of your collection too soon, Sheila. You will regret it later.

@tim. Quoth wiki:

"While discussing the origin of the title "Rhythm Nation", Jackson stated she first uttered the phrase during a conversation with her producers. "I thought it would be great if we could create our own nation" adding that it would be "one that would have a positive message and that everyone would be free to join." She based the idea on the prevalence of various youth groups and organizations that are formed as a means of creating a common identity. The usage of the number "1814" represents the year the national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written."
