what a Moog-tastic way to start the day. Hi Jan!

Hi Jan! What a joyful bunch of youngsters on the phoyto.

Hanneke Kappen! I still sometimes see her here in town.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Really?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Yes. She lives here.

No way! We only have Typhoon... ;-)

That's what you get in 'het den Haag van Overijssel' (-:

David in California:

Hello, Jan. I was wondering if the Dutch groups that had international hits, such as Shocking Blue, The Tee Set, and The George Baker Selection, were the most popular groups in the Netherlands?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Jan Turkenburg:

(⌐■_■)
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi David, They were definitely very popular overhere, but there were a few equally popular, that didn't make it across the ocean.
Avatar 12:12pm
Mr Fab:

Interesting question David. Apparently some Japanese groups that have some Western popularity, i.e. Shonen Knife, are not very popular in Japan.
Avatar 12:13pm
Mr Fab:

"The Fighting Cats" - ha!
Avatar 12:16pm
David in California:

Jan and Mr. Fab, thanks for your replies.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

@David in CA: besides the older now gone bands, Bands like Golden Earring were - and are still very popular here and not only because of Radar Love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
WR:

Hello Jan. Very different image than my mental one of the Hague.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

And IMHO, the George Baker Selction absolutely was popular but the later songs they made were quite cheesy and wasn't particularly meant for the top-40 hits and quality pop music listeners. However, their songs like Una Paloma Blanca reached the higher regions of the charts. It was very cheesy, nevertheless.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Now Herman Brood was also one of the most popular singers overhere, but I don't think he was known outside of Europe.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Indeed, Jan! Herman was our own rock and roll animal.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Jan Turkenburg:

and born and raised in Zwolle! :-)
Avatar 12:25pm
David in California:

Thanks also for your additional insights, PK. I'm looking forward to your bitterballen on Friday.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

@WR: the Zwolle - Den Haag reference is from a silly song of comedig duo Koot & Bie. It wasn't meant to be serious. Zwolle is very nice and far from bad, and Den Haag just is plain evil.
Avatar 12:25pm
Mr Fab:

no, don't think Herman Brood made any impact over here (despite him just mentioning the Sunset Strip!) Tho Jan's faves Grupo Sportivo had some underground popularity around this same time. College radio played them a bit, and I'd see their records around.
Avatar 12:25pm
drolletje:

Halo Jan, and all you crazy No-Mountaineers!

Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Darryl!
Avatar 12:27pm
Mr Fab:

'sup Darryl!

Just looked it up, and Focus' "Hocus Pocus" peaked at #9 on both the Dutch and US charts.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

This song was mentioned by Kees van Kooten, who said this was a pinnacle in anarcho-poetry.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Jan Turkenburg:

ah!
Avatar 12:28pm
drolletje:

Hi Jan, Hi there Mr Fab!
Avatar 12:30pm
drolletje:

That's a very Motown riff, isn't it?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

This song would be great as 'Love me just a little bit more' by the Dolly Dots would precede or follow it.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I agree with both Paper Kosmonaut and Drolletje!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:32pm

Dutch Fun-punk" is a genre!? Wow, can we have a "Fun-Punk Muziek Express" every week?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Hey Domenic! :-)
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Jan Turkenburg:

It would be mainly De Boegies themselves who introduced the name 'pretpunk'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
WR:

My main (vague) impressions made in the early 70s of The Hague were based on reading of various international trials and tribunals and my eager acquisition of a few books of Husserl published there: Cartesian meditations and the Paris lectures.] Edited by S. Strasser. The Hague, Netherlands: Martinus Nijhoff, 1973

I've yet to write all the comments I want to on your Teenager Muziek episode last month:

Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:41pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Hello Joe!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Pretpunk wasn't my cup of tea. I knew the Boegies from nearby and I have seen a couple of their later gigs but at that time I was more into new wave and postpunk..

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
WR:

Thanks Jan, haven't finished listening to that FDL episode, so more comments may come, and Mr Fab, if you are still reading here, delighted by the Thereming selection Jan played on Monday.

Unfortunately, I am even more behind on work than I am on WFMU commenting. Will keep listening and wishing I could be somewhere like Fuutlaan Beach but back to the work screens... Laters all.
