A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hey hey! My T. S. Eliot impression is pretty sharp. I usually save it for April. It's a big hit with K8.

Hey, TDK60. Yeah, following SM Ken's lead, my new phrase for the week is National Psychopathy Carnival Week. But I'm taking advantage of it to jump on the cheese grenade. Making a baked ziti today.

Spaulding Gray, I think it was, described hearing the Eliot recording coming out of dorm rooms filled with 'coeds' who claimed not want to die virginal during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Note the St Louis similarities to Burroughs' declamatory voice, or maybe Burroughs intentionally aped his a bit, or maybe that's just how U.S. private schools taught it 1866-1950.

Murakami: You are spot-on with the Eliot-Burroughs connection. The word that comes it mind is "patrician". I think it may also be relevant that they both attended Harvard, and Eliot was from a prominent "Boston brahmin" family.

Murakami: I think in Eliot's case it's also a matter of "more English than the English." As soon as he got there, he went full native (to be fair, it was his heritage): the poshest accent, the most conservative monarchist politics, the high-churchiest Anglo-Catholicism, etc. Kind of like a more genteel version of Americans who go to Ireland with the "Kiss Me I'm Irish" sweaters.

Purple sadness is the sadness of classical music and eggplant, the stroke of midnight, human organs, ports cut off for part of every year, words with too many meanings, incense, insomnia, and the crescent moon. It is the sadness of play money, and icebergs seen from a canoe. It is possible to dance to purple sadness, though slowly, as slowly as it takes to dig a pit to hold a sleeping giant. Purple sadness is pervasive, and goes deeper into the interior than the world’s greatest nickel deposits, or any other sadness on earth. It is the sadness of depositories, and heels echoing down a long corridor, it is the sound of your mother closing the door at night, leaving you alone.

I will be pan-searing and spicifying some Brussels sprouts for appearances' sake.

Not to be too negative, but that NYS bill sounds like total posturing and shifting the problem to users, not manufacturers. It will squeeze the people who can least afford it and who need those bikes to make a living and will make no difference to anyone else. Go after the manufacturers and the Silicon Valley venture-capital architects of the gig economy if you want to make a difference, O legislators. But all they want to do is posture. Antiworker regulations only hurt the workers, it turns out.

Have you read “Black Against Empire”? The introduction was riveting. Preempting Nixon’s visit as the first American emissaries during the Cold War.
