Nice Cowbell 😀
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Gary:

Is there a graph somewhere of cowbell's rise and fall?
Avatar 8:17pm
tim abdellah:

I hope so!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
chresti:

Maybe on discogs, you can search cowbell, and create a graph based on the results?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
Gary:

Great idea! I'm going to guess it will wind up being bell shaped (haha) peaking around 1969?
  8:20pm
?:

Solution?
Avatar 8:21pm
tim abdellah:

69 was a good year for the cowbell. There are some 70s highlights of course - glam & disco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
Gary:

Here's what a straight-up word search in Discogs tell us so far as number of hits per decade:

Decade
517 2020s
2,848 2010s
2,921 2000s
2,933 1990s
2,864 1980s
3,681 1970s
301 1960s
49 1950s
4 1940s

chresti:

Gary, your list *is* a graph of sorts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Gary:

Thank you Question Mark!
Avatar 8:25pm
tim abdellah:

Of course we really want the RATE of cowbell usage, not just the raw number. Since there are more recordings overall in later decades
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
chresti:

Looks like the 70s had the most.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Gary:

Good, point, Tim
Avatar 8:26pm
tim abdellah:

And of course it only gets into Discogs if the cowbell is CREDITED on the release.

In memory, the 1970s was peak cowbell. Honky Tonk Women really let that out of the gate. Yeah, it was fake BOC on SNL...using most of their real names

Did I not share with you all my Spotify Cowbell playlist?
open.spotify.com...
Avatar 8:44pm
tim abdellah:

Caveat 1 : It only includes songs where the cowbell plays ON THE BEAT ONLY, like Will Ferrell does in that SNL sketch. Thus no "Honky Tonk Women"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
Gary:

OMG
Avatar 8:44pm
tim abdellah:

Caveat 2: Yes, the first 2 songs do not conform to that, but they are early uses of the cowbell in rock and roll
Avatar 8:44pm
tim abdellah:

Caveat 3: I did not look at African or Afro-Cuban music. Was really looking at rock and R&B.
Avatar 8:44pm
tim abdellah:

For a long time, the earliest example of the on-the-one cowbell pattern was The Beatles 1964 (You Can't Do That and I Call Your Name). I was kind of amazed by that, but wondered where they got the idea. I posted the question on a Beatles Facebook group, where someone brought up the examples of Marvin Gaye 1962 (Stubborn Kind of Fellow and Hitch Hike).
