now let's see if this poker-faced classic can stand up to the ironic assault of the track that preceded it

Rush is OK. The only Canadian rush that I *love* is when I rush to get some poutine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
ironybread:

Oh right, this has movements, doesn't it? Forgot to put them in the playlist. You've got your "In the Valley", then "Didacts and Narpets", followed by "No One at the Bridge", "Panacea", "Bacchus Plateau", and finally "The Fountain".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
fred:

There was a story about minotaurs in conjunctions a couple of years ago. In related news, Kurt Gottschalk might have a show on the fifth Wednesday of months that have one on WGXC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
Zipperhead7:

Actually, Rush's CD of covers wasn't half bad. Their version of Summertime Blues mashed up Blue Cheer and the Who. Geddy also laid off the helium. But it's the only Rush I could ever tolerate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Zipperhead7:

From Wikipedia: "Didacts and Narpets" possibly an anagram for "Addicts and Parents."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
fred:

Is that was Rush is about? I expected worse, from what I had heard about them. I don't see how one could care enough to hate them (then again, I had never heard them before now, I can see how I'd have a different take if I had been forced to hear that for years)

Hi fred, my son just called me from Ivry-sur-Seine, he and his dog are there.

I was stupid as a teenager and resisted liking Rush because my best friend at the time - so close to have this dumb sibling like frenemy type relationship where music was concerned - wouldn't shut up about Rush.

Hi coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm

I was saved by older people that played Captain Beefheart, when I was 15. Before that I was monumentally stupid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
fred:

@chresti: how nice of you! I might be outside more next week as the ban on live shows should be lifted, but more in Montreuil than Paris
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm

@fred, not sure how long he'll be there, he thinks he wants to stay, he bought a one-way ticket.

@chresti: If I do meet him and I refer to you as "chresti", would it make sense to him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
Franco Twinkie:

I'm still stupid after all these years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
Zipperhead7:

According to Discogs this was recorded the same year as Agharta/Pangea with many of the same players.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
fred:

@chresti: if he's there for a while, he should check this out: www.sonicprotest.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
coelacanth∅:

i was well-influenced by older people i lucked into. one, my older brother, tried to give me good xmas gifts, sometimes something he thought i should get into, sometimes what he thought i *was* into. so he gave me rush's "hemispheres", figuring i like prog and somehow rush slipped by me. it's true rush had slipped by me. never heard of it. so i put the record on. and again, and again and again...nope. not only did nothing for me but grated on me increasingly!
i've given rush many chances since then and ultimately like one track. "2112", a 20-minute piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
chresti:

@fred: maybe? I told him you went by "fred", "chresti" sounds enough like my name ("christi")
Happy the ban is over on live shows!
